FANDOM(S): CSI, The X-Files

SPOILERS: [CSI: Fourth season]; [X-Files: Seventh season]
RATING: R (for language, violence, etc.)
SUMMARY: "Doctor Grissom and I briefly discussed the possibility of splitting up. Two of us searching around the shore while two of us stay on the boat."

Grissom and Catherine watched as Mulder and Scully climbed out of their rental car, tension thick between the federal officers as they strode quickly to where they were leaning against the Denali. Grissom attempted a half-smile. "Glad to see you could keep up, with Catherine's lead foot and all."

While Scully glanced narrow-eyed and purse-lipped out at the lake behind the criminalists, Mulder managed a smile. "Don't worry. I'm a pro at high-speed driving. Isn't that right, Scully?" When his partner merely gave a grunt in response, Mulder smiled apologetically at Grissom and Catherine, before clapping his hands together. "So! Where's the boat?"

"Waiting for us at the docks," Catherine replied, gesturing behind them.

Mulder grinned widely at her. "I get to drive!"

"So we'll start here, Agent Mulder!" Catherine yelled over the roar of the boat's engine, standing beside Mulder at the steering wheel. She jabbed her finger at a red-inked portion of their map, emphasizing the starting location.

Mulder, upon noting Catherine's gaze had turned back to him, nodded his response. "Don't ask me why, but I have a feeling we're not gonna find any more bodies today."

"Why do you think that?"

Mulder grinned widely at the strawberry blonde. "Thought I told you not to ask."

Catherine, with a smirk, held up her hands as if in apology, then, after exchanging another grin with the federal agent, she shook her head and made her way down the stairs onto the boat's main deck. She smiled upon spotting Grissom leaning over the rail, peering into the water they were gliding quickly over. She cocked her head slightly, being awarded with another excellent view, much like their first night on the case.

This time, when she was jolted out of her viewing session, she found herself staring straight into the confused, yet amused face of Gil Grissom. "Hmm?" she managed to squeak out, while she felt her cheeks burn in embarrassment.

He quirked an eyebrow, a smirk clearly written in his eyes. "What are you doing?"

"I was just... uh, nothing," she stammered out, then quickly cleared her throat. "So! What's our first plan of attack?"

At hearing this query, Scully ambled over from peering over the other side of the boat to stand with Grissom and Catherine. "Doctor Grissom and I briefly discussed the possibility of splitting up. Two of us searching around the shore while two of us stay on the boat."

Catherine nodded slowly. "That sounds good. So who will be leaving with who?"

All three turned at the sound of Mulder's shout, and looked up to see him pointing somewhere toward the shore. All three turned to follow the direction in which he was pointing, and simultaneously squinted to make out whatever it was the tall agent had seen. "What is it, Mulder?" Scully yelled up toward her partner.

Mulder, now holding a pair of binoculars to his eyes, lowered them and pointed again. "It looks like a cave or cavern of some sort! Come here!"

While Grissom and Catherine shared a puzzled look, Scully glanced briefly over her shoulder at them before jogging up the steps to stand beside her partner, taking the binoculars from his hands and raising them to her own eyes. His hand settled on her hip as she did so, guiding her a few steps to the right while his other hand pointed out what he'd seen. "See that cliff overlooking the shoreline?"

She nodded behind the binoculars, not taking her eyes off where Mulder was pointing. She soon felt the two criminalists stepping up behind them. "What am I supposed to be seeing here, Mulder?"

"The cavern! It's on the left side of the cliff, six to seven feet above the beach."

"I see it..." she responded softly after a moment, adjusting the focus on the binoculars. Pulling them from her eyes, she turned, raising a brow at her partner in question while handing the binoculars to Catherine, who immediately brought them to her eyes for a look. "So it's a cavern, Mulder. How does it pertain to the case?"

"Perfect place for somebody to hide out," Catherine surmised. She too pulled the binoculars from her eyes then, and handed them finally to Grissom.

"Or something," Mulder added, grinning at the eye roll he was receiving from his partner.

He patted her hip with the hand that was still resting there, before moving back toward the steering wheel. "I say we split up, Scully. Two of us can check out that cavern, and two can stay in the boat and fish for more bodies."

"So who's staying and who's going?" Catherine asked, turning to glance at Grissom as he rejoined the group near the steering wheel, setting the binoculars down.

"Well, I wanna see what's in there for myself," Mulder replied, hazel eyes twinkling with boyish excitement. He nudged his partner while still steering the boat toward the shore. "I don't think Scully would get the same thrill out of it that I would."

After another eye roll from the redhead, Catherine smiled and turned to her own companion. "Gil? Which one of us should go with Agent Mulder?"

"I think I'd like to go," he responded softly, glancing to each of the three in turn. Mulder still looked excited at the prospect of 'exploring'... Scully retained her skeptical expression... and Catherine was busy furrowing her brows in concern.

"Are you sure?" she asked, her hand finding his arm. "It could be dangerous."

"Cath, I'll be fine. I've got my gun."

She rolled her eyes, the barest hint of a smirk playing across her full lips. "You've never fired your gun. Who's to say it even still works?"

"I've got my gun as well," Mulder chimed in, and smiled at the strawberry-blonde. "And I've shot mine plenty of times." He sent her a reassuring wink, obviously reading the distress hugging her features. "I'll look out for him."

Catherine nodded her thank-you, and turned to look at Grissom, whose serious 'supervisor' look was back in place. "Stay here with Agent Scully and see if you can find any more bodies," he instructed her, pointing at her in an almost stern fashion.

She was instantly reminded of a moment not too long ago, when she'd found out he'd scheduled himself to have surgery on his hearing, a possibly dangerous procedure. When she'd showed concern, instead of reassuring her, he'd just acted as her strict supervisor. This moment was almost an exact replica, in his tone and expression. With his surgery, however, he had come close to telling her he loved her... or so she assumed, but had merely wished her 'good luck' instead.

"Cath..." His voice drew her from her thoughts.

This time, his lips twitched in a slight reassuring smile. "I'll be fine."

She smiled back, as best she could though she knew it was probably coming off as weak... and gave his arm a squeeze in response. She met his eyes, her own diving into the tranquil blues staring back at her, and she just hoped her affection for him was written in her own eyes as she murmured softly, but with conviction, "Good luck."

She then watched as his eyebrows twitched briefly in confusion, before comprehension dawned on his features, just as it had a year ago in the hospital when she'd tossed his ambiguous 'I love you' back at him. Now, to her surprise, Grissom stepped forward and gave her hand a light squeeze, holding it within his own for a few seconds longer than necessary. "Good luck," he replied, equally soft.

I just love this fic! Your characters are perfectly captured; their interactions spot on and easy to see & hear. And I love this storyline. The exchange between Catherine and Gil at the end there is so sweet. I miss those days of G/C.

I look forward to the next chapters :D
