The Las Vegas Complication [TBBT; Sheldon/Penny]
TITLE: The Las Vegas Complication
CHAPTER 6: My Road
FANDOM: The Big Bang Theory
PAIRING: Sheldon/Penny
SPOILERS: Season three
SUMMARY: They were the best years of my life.

I didn't know it at the time, but it's about the journey
You got to appreciate each day, and you were there to help me

Sheldon Lee Cooper has never been one to dwell on, or reminisce about, the past. His job has always been to look toward the future, always the future -- toward progress and new ways of thinking and new roads to travel. If nothing reminds him of that, the Nobel Prize sitting proudly on his mantel sure does.

But now as he heads down the hall, past the array of framed photographs lining the wall in diagonal patterns, he can't help but stop; pause to admire each one, taking stock of the happiness captured within each frame, each moment on the road that led him to where he stands this very second.

"Sheldon, that's my dress! Get off, get off!" she giggled, stumbling a bit, the sheer joy laced within the seemingly annoyed command causing him to grin and chuckle back.

"I'm sorry! Here." He reached out with both hands to catch her by the waist, keeping her from toppling over, though she was currently doubled over in laughter and he was laughing at her in turn.

"Perfect, you guys!" And the camera flashed.

Penny spun in his arms, whacking him with her bouquet while he slipped his hands around to her lower back, still smiling down at her. "I hardly think that's the proper way to treat the man that's buying you and a hundred-fifty other people dinner."

She rolled her eyes, still smiling, and leaned up for a kiss as the camera flashed once more.

Sheldon runs his fingers along the bottom of the frame, within which is the photo of Penny doubled over in laughter and him laughing along with her, his hands bracing her waist. A smile twitches at his lips, and he moves to the next frame.

"Come on! What better way to get some fresh air?"

"The beach? At night? After we've been
drinking? Penny, Penny, Penny."

"Shelly, Shelly, Shelly," Missy broke in as she stepped up next to him, shoving him so he stumbled onto the sand. "Shoes and socks off. Let's go."

"Hurry up, Sheldon!" Leonard taunted from further down the beach, arm out as a brace for Penny while she removed her dressy sandals. "Otherwise I'll kidnap your wife."

"I think he'd probably really do it," Howard murmured as an aside, centering Leonard and Penny in the lens of his disposable camera while Penny hopped up on Leonard's back and gave some horse-like command.

"Look how much fun she's having! Go join in." Missy gave him another nudge, removing her own dressy sandals and bunching up her long bridesmaid's dress before taking off down the beach with Raj.

Sheldon made a face down at the sand, "It's still awfully hot," then glanced up at hearing Penny's joyous shriek while Leonard ran down the beach, spinning with her on his back, as she hit him, laughing through her shrieks. "Leonard, stop! Put me down, I'm gonna puke!"

Finally, Sheldon joined in, spouting off various, "Ooh! Ah! Ow!" exclamations every time his feet would touch down against the still-hot sand. Finally he reached the shore, where everyone else was waiting for him. Leonard set Penny down so she was standing barefoot in the wet sand.

She grinned up at him wickedly, eyes gleaming as she said to the gang, "Let's throw Sheldon into the ocean!"

His eyes widened. "No, no. Penny remember this is
our party. We're supposed to exhibit decorum and--"

And that was when Penny shoved him down into the water. Granted, it was little more than a foot-and-a-half deep, but just enough to soak most of his tux. Glaring up at her, he proclaimed, "Woman, once again you are playing with forces beyond your ken."

"Yeah?" She grinned and bent forward with one hand planted on her hip, teasing him lowly, "Your Ken can kiss my Barbie."

Sheldon leaped up and chased her through the surf, her shrieks utterly infectious and causing him to laugh boisterously. Raj and Howard flung clumps of wet sand at each other while Leonard and Missy took turns splashing the couple frolicking in the surf.

"Sheldon!" her voice breaks him from his thoughts, and he tears his eyes away from the image of Penny, Leonard and Missy on the beach to glance toward the bedroom door.

"Are you coming in or what? You said you'd give me a back rub and sing 'Soft Kitty!'"

He rolls his eyes as he smirks, "Coming!" and his eyes flit toward another photograph.

"Congratulations, sweetie!" Penny noisily kissed his cheek, smushing his face with her fingers on one side of his chin and thumb on the other. When she was through, she used that very same thumb to wipe the residual lipstick from his face.

"Thank you." He still couldn't believe it. Even as he stared at the item in his hand, his own personal Holy Grail, he couldn't believe it.

"You won the Nobel, Sheldon!" Leonard exclaimed. "Shouldn't you be bouncing off the walls right now?"

From beside him, his former girlfriend-turned-rekindled-romance, Doctor Stephanie, smiled. "Yeah! Or at the very least, I figured you'd be walking around with it swaddled in some ornate blanket of some kind."

"Oh." Sheldon shook his head. "No. No, this must be out in the open -- Penny, it can go on our mantel! We'll finally have something for the mantel other than that obnoxious clock your mother sent us! -- oh, and will need to be polished daily." Glancing to his wife, he furrowed his brows. "Would you like to take the first slot on the polishing schedule, or shall I?"

Shooting him a look, Penny glared facetiously and told him, "Just smile for the damn camera, Sheldon."

And he turned toward Doctor Stephanie, who snapped his picture with her camera phone.

Entering the bedroom, Sheldon smiles at his pouting wife, currently slouched against the headboard. "Well? Here I am."

"I know. Come over here," she whines, scrunching up her face in a purely childlike manner as she reaches out to him, "I need you."

Rather than lecture her for the sixth time about her occasional bouts of regression, he indulges her instead and slides onto the bed next to her, allowing her to lean her head on his shoulder.

"Sing 'Soft Kitty' to me," she coos softly, twining their fingers together.

Sheldon chuckles, kissing her temple as he argues only half-heartedly, "'Soft Kitty' is for when you're sick. You're not sick."

Putting on her best pout, Penny runs a hand over her abdomen and gives him a large helping of doe eyes. "Pregnant and bloat-y is a kind of sick..."

He rolls his eyes, but is well aware that Penny knows he's wrapped around her finger. He has been for years. "Alright."

So he lays a palm across her abdomen, feeling their son kicking and tumbling beneath, as he starts to sing, marveling all the while at the journey that took him here.

Who would have thought Las Vegas, of all cities, would have been the catalyst for the longest, most rewarding journey of his life?

And without your love I would never have made it
That's the truth

Author's Notes: BIG thanks to anyone that stuck with this story (if you're still out there), and especially to fiddlings; when I had thought I'd already posted this final piece, she was the one to lovingly point out that, no - I'm sorta retarded for thinking such nonsense. SO, here it is. Hope you enjoyed.

Just sat down, took a deep breath, and read the WHOLE thing. This was a very satisfying read! I loved the dynamics between them and how Penny and Sheldon mirror each other so very nicely. :)

Thank you so much for the comment!!

I loved the dynamics between them and how Penny and Sheldon mirror each other so very nicely. Hee, thanks! I've always enjoyed how Penny and Sheldon unconsciously mirror each other in the show, so I felt compelled to include at least a pseudo-homage to that. :)

Just read this whole story! I loved it :D You have a perfect grasp of these characters makng it easy to imagine the scenes and hear the dialogue. I particularly love that Raj knew what happened all along, and his "Dude what is your problem?" that he recounts asking Sheldon :) I also loved the part where Howard and Raj make the train song references. And of course I loved the whole Sheldon/Penny storyline. It was a great idea. Thank you for sharing :)

Aww, thank you, Jac! I'm so happy you enjoyed this! I adore Raj and his selective mutism, so I definitely had to toss that in there. And Howard and his snark :D I love them so.

Glad you liked the S/P storyline too -- it was kinda complicated to weave, but ended up being a great challenge. I hope to write more of these two in the future. Thanks again! ♥
