Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 13: You Belong To Me
FANDOM: 30 Rock
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"

Liz sighed and closed her eyes, leaning her head back against the brick wall. She was glad the night was cooling down; she needed to clear her head -- there was way too much going on up there right now. The wedding... Jack... his stupid lips... his mother... the flutters in her stupid stomach anytime Jack got remotely close to her...

It was official. His mother adored her. She made sure to tell her so, loudly, while joyously kissing her cheek and squeezing her shoulders almost painfully as she said goodbye. She'd only stayed for an hour, long enough to get several free drinks in her before taking off. Jack had suppressed his excitement but to Liz it was plain as day, all over his face. And then his mother had to go and say it -- "Your wife is adorable, Jackie! Why you haven't given her a kiss since I've been here is beyond me."

Liz had stumbled through explaining that they weren't big on public displays of affection when Jack grabbed her face and suddenly kissed her, like he was proving some grand point to his mother. Which was so unlike him. But that wasn't even the worst part. No, the worst part was that it wasn't all that awful. She didn't gag. She actually didn't really have time to react, or to think much of it. She had been too stunned and then before she could even say anything to him about it, his mother was sweeping them both up for another painful hug and then she was on her way.

So Liz had escaped out back, hiding in the gardens and trying to get her stomach to stop its stupid twirling. She tried to force one coherent thought not pertaining to Jack into her head, but it was a vain attempt. She kept thinking about what Geiss had said, that he had to hang on to her... and then Jack's response... "I intend to, sir."

And then the words of his mother, eerily similar to Geiss'... "I think you should hang on to this one for awhile."

Then, just to make matters worse, Bianca's words from Gerhardt's party had come drifting back to her when Jack's lips had touched hers, and she was pretty much doomed from that point forward.

"I can tell from the way he looks at you, that he's serious."

Liz gulped in as much air as she could and kept her eyes closed, head leaned back against the brick wall as she rubbed the tension from the back of her neck with one hand. She couldn't take much more of this, of these thoughts. She'd go insane before the night was over.

And then a soft voice beckoned her attention, and a warm familiar smile relaxed her, just a little. "Jenna," Liz whispered, slumping against the brick wall now.

Jenna, wearing a sympathetic smile, came immediately over to wrap her friend in a hug. "I was looking all over for you."

"You were?"

"Well actually, Jack was. He sent me out here to find you, and said you might be having some sort of woman's problem?"

Liz rolled her eyes ever-so-briefly. So Jack hadn't turned completely into a doting husband. That was good. "Don't tell him where I am, okay?"

"Are you alright? I'm sorry I haven't been paying super close attention to you tonight. I've got about five GE guys fighting over me right now, Liz, and I'm loving it!" she giggled. "It's like... fleet week, all over again!"

"That's great," Liz muttered, looking down at her hands.

"Liz, what's wrong?"

"Everything," she sighed, and then proceeded to launch into the whole big, stupid story. The things Jack had said to her all day, the way he'd been treating her... not to mention what Pete, and Don Geiss, and Jack's mother had said. She topped it all off by mentioning the kiss, and was amused only briefly by the way Jenna's eyes almost popped out of her head.

"Wow. I kinda wish I hadn't missed that."

"Yeah? Well I wish I had," Liz grumbled. "I'd probably only be half as confused as I am right now."

Jenna made a face. "Is Jack a horrible kisser or something?"

Liz shook her head. "No. He's not."

"And that's the problem?"

"Jenna, I just -- I don't know what the hell's going on!"

Jenna laid a hand on her friend's shoulder supportively. "Honey, you've been saying that for a month now."

"I know! I was hoping by now I'd have at least some insight, but there's none!"

Jenna shook her head, brows raised in disbelief. "None? At all? Not even, maybe... at the back of your mind? Or the pit of your stomach?"

At the gravelly voice, Liz straightened abruptly. "Jack."

He smiled briefly. "Found you."

She nodded, once, and tried to ignore that Jenna's eyes were bouncing back and forth between the two of them as if she was watching a tennis match. "Yep, you did."

Jenna smiled and squeezed Liz's hand, brushing past her and Jack. "I think I'll head inside. It's kinda chilly out here anyway." Over her shoulder, she added, "Besides, I want to see if the fights between those GE guys have turned physical yet!"

Liz rolled her eyes at her friend's lack of subtlety, but waved goodbye to her nonetheless. When she turned her eyes back to Jack, it was to see him watching her carefully. "What?"

"You alright? You ran out so abruptly."

"I know," she sighed, "I'm just..." She tried to think up a word other than 'crazy,' and finally waved her hand dismissively as she finished, "stressed."

"The night's almost over," he assured her, mirroring her position and leaning back against the building beside her.

When his shoulder brushed against hers, Liz felt an involuntary shiver riddle her body. Jack, predictably, took notice and immediately removed his tux jacket. "Jenna's right, it is rather chilly out here. Take this."

"No, thanks, Jack, I'm..." The jacket landed across her shoulders before she could even finish her protest, and she smiled tentatively. "Thanks."

Jack just nodded and leaned back against the building again, bending one knee and pressing his foot into the wall while he shoved his hands into his pockets. "So my mother actually liked you."

Liz glanced sidelong at him and arched an eyebrow, tugging on the lapels of his tux jacket to bring it closer around herself as she asked reluctantly, "That good or bad?"

A chuckle escaped his lips and he shook his head. "To be honest, I have no idea. It's never happened before. She always found something wrong with the girls I dated in high school and college, and... she hated Bianca from day one." After a moment, he added, "I'm sorry I kissed you."

She looked over at him, and just watched him for a moment, staring at his polished dress shoes. For a fleeting moment, she felt sorry, but she wasn't sure why. Just for a moment, though, he looked like a remorseful little boy. She felt compelled to give him a hug, but... that was just nuts. So she shook off the feeling and replied lightly. "Ah, it's okay. You warned me you might, right? At least you're keeping me on my toes."

Jack chuckled softly, briefly, before his attention diverted to the speaker overhead, letting out the music playing in the ballroom. When he looked back down at her, it was with one of those smiles... one of those smug Donaghy smiles that sometimes made her wanna smack the hell out of him. She recognized the song then, and knew why he was smiling. "How did you know I like Patsy Cline?"

When he shrugged, she grinned. "More of Jonathan's research?"

"Something to that effect, yes." He held out his hand and stepped away from the wall, promising her, "I'll keep my lips to myself this time."

Liz gave a chuckle and stepped away from the wall as well (was she happy or disappointed by that promise? She had no idea), handing his tux jacket back to him. As he put it on with a raised eyebrow, she told him, "I won't need it. You'll keep me warm," and drifted on autopilot into his arms.

Jack leaned back slightly. "Lemon, did you just flirt with me?"

She smirked. "It's the champagne," she insisted, "so don't get used to it."

He smiled and pulled her close as Patsy Cline started to wail, "See the pyramids along the Nile, watch the sunrise on a tropic isle; just remember darling all the while, you belong to me..."

Liz supposed she should be freaking out about how familiar this now felt -- slow-dancing with Jack -- but instead she rested her forehead on his shoulder and closed her eyes while his arm wound completely around her waist. She draped one arm loosely over his shoulders and tried not to breathe in the "Jack" smell that was all over his tux jacket as she turned her head, forehead leaning against his neck while her cheek rested on his chest.

A thick, but comfortable silence enveloped them, and Liz's eyes slid closed again of their own accord. The air was still slightly chilly, but it was a welcome contrast to the warmth she was feeling resting against Jack (her husband -- shut up, brain). A heavy floral scent surrounded them, a mixture of several different breeds of flower from all over the lush gardens, and crickets chirped somewhere off in the distance. It was calming, it was nice, and it was... crap, it was downright romantic.

"Jack..." Liz heard herself murmuring, and was that her voice that was so low, so clogged with drowsiness and comfort?

"Hmm?" One hand slid across the small of her back and the other squeezed hers, folding their clasped hands over his heart.

Liz felt compelled to ask the question that had been on her mind all night. Well... one of them. "Why is there so much music from the fifties? What is it with you and that decade?"

She felt his chin resting on top of her head as he looked down at her for a moment, before she heard him reply, "Honestly? It soothes me."

Liz opened her eyes and made a face against him, scrunching up her nose in confusion. As if sensing this (reading her thoughts again, damn him), Jack clarified, "It reminds me of a simpler time." His hand released hers and Liz shivered as his fingertips ran down her hand, over her wrist and down her forearm, stopping at her bracelet; the wedding gift he'd given her just a week before. "The fifties, to me, symbolizes innocence. Naivete, I suppose." He played with the bracelet's charms, fingertips fluttering across the skin of her arm. "Neighbors trusted each other, divorce was practically unheard of, and this country believed in its leaders."

Liz thought that was kind of strange, considering he was this big corporate giant that pretty much worshipped all the philandering politicians. "Huh, that's ironic."

"Even corporate moguls have hearts, Lemon," he told her, and she pulled back, apologetic.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it to come out so--"

He laid his finger over her lips and shook his head, dismissing her apology. "I know."

Then, the sensation of his finger against her lips seemed to hit them both at once, and their eyes met. Liz thought back on that kiss in front of his mother and wondered just how far out of the realm of possibility it would be for that moment to repeat itself... minus the couple-hundred amused onlookers.

Apparently, Jack was thinking the same thing. His finger skipped across her lower lip and effectively caused her heart to skip several beats. His hand slipped just under her jawline, catapulting her heart straight up into her throat, as his eyes zeroed in on her lips and he read her thoughts again, whispering in answer to them, "I have to. I'm sorry."

"Fly that ocean in a silver plane, see the jungle when it's wet with rain..."

Liz forced her knees not to buckle (what the hell was going on?) and she felt herself nodding, emphatically (why the hell was she agreeing to this?), whispering back automatically, "Okay."

"Just remember 'til you're home again, you belong to me..."

Patsy faded into the background as Jack got closer and closer, and Liz shut her eyes, not wanting to see what kind of irreparable damage this was going to do. The last one was quick, and just for show -- she got the sinking feeling that this one would be anything but.

When he got within mere millimeters of her, a throat clearing startled them apart. Jenna stood in the archway to the gardens, looking a mixture of stunned and apologetic, as she stuttered, "Um, uh... I'm sorry, I just thought you guys should know... Frank is cutting the cake."

Liz, grateful now for the interruption (seriously, she could've kissed Jenna -- in a non-lesbian manner -- for coming in when she did), glimpsed quick at Jack before she gathered up her skirt and ran back into the Plaza, completely missing (ignoring) his eyes following her the entire way.

Aww, thanks, as always! I'm getting a little worried it'll get OOC with them getting closer (BUT I totally like to lean on the excuse that we don't get to see them being close on the show, so... there. hahah). Glad it's still enjoyable as I take them into new territory. :D

And "Stupid Jenna" seems to be the slogan of this chapter, hahaha. I love it. More soon!

Isn't that song sooo pretty? I love it. And like tons of people have done that song, hehe, so I've got a bunch of versions. Patsy's is my fave, though :)

"Stupid effing Jenna" seems to be the consensus around here, hahaha! Glad you guys are getting into this :D

GAH!!!! Damn you, Jenna! Okay, I've basically melted into a puddle. This chapter was so good, and that moment in the garden was so incredbly sexy. GAH! So close to a romantic kiss! I love this fic!!!! Can't wait for the next chapter!

Hehehe. Everybody's damning Jenna in their reviews. I love it! Haha! Glad you're still enjoying this. I've got such a thing for my fave couples dancing, out in a private garden somewhere, all slow and romantic. I don't know why. I just love it! ♥♥

*giggle* Oh, sexual tension's so much fun to write. And everybody's totally hating Jenna right now for her interruption and that makes me lol. It's awesome and I'm glad you're so into this!

More soon!

I.. I just... no words. I just. WOW. :) Um, this pleases me greatly? I feel a liiittle spoiled because you gave us another dance, and it was a slow dance. A very private dance with lots of touching, and that might as well have included a kiss. To "You Belong To Me".
I have to tell you how much I appreciate the fact that you are staying true to the 'magnificent bastard' quality to Jack, and that Liz remains aware of it- but can't help herself.
And Jack's mom loving Liz completely threw him off, too. And something about that is SO hot.
And your song choices are truly furthering the plot, which is just tremendous.
Thank you!
I've never read a fic that felt like not breathing in between chapters.

Hehehehe. Thank you so so much, as always!

I HAD to include another dance. I'm obsessed with the Jack/Liz slow-dancing. And I ♥ "You Belong To Me" especially when it's Patsy Cline singing it. I'm kinda also obsessed with the whole idea of Jack subtly touching Liz whenever he can.

I'm glad you think I'm staying true to Jack! In the coming chapters I'm getting more and more worried that he's getting OOC; it's good to hear that so far, I'm doing a-okay keeping him in line (or as much as you CAN keep Jack Donaghy in line. *snick*)

Glad to hear you like the songs too. Jack just seems so darn Rat-Pack-ish, I was helpless to resist throwing in all these oldies-but-goodies. I'm in love with fifties music, so expect a lot more :D

You are awesome! Thank you so much, again!

I have "you belong to me" on iTunes, and I was listening to it just as I read this!
good chills...goosebumps...you are way too good ;)

Haha! Jenna interferes in a Jack Liz moment! Shippers, release your sporks!

I love the title. Title alone is squee-rific. I'm a happy shipper right now.

And, yes, I would love t be n Liz' place right now. And I'll breathe in all the "Jack" smell my nostrils can inhale.

I love you. You PWN me.
a.: TF; your love is such a tease;regalish on June 19th, 2007 06:54 pm (UTC)
Hahaha! Yes, the Jenna interference went over quite well indeed, hehehe. Meaning everyone now wants to kill her, which was totally my intent ;D

And the JACK SMELL!! Hahaha. You KNOW he smells good. Not like one of those older guys that smells like Old Spice. Ew. Nope, he'd smell goooooood. *drifts off*

....Oh, I'm sorry. hehehe. Thanks again for the awesome review! You rock.

"I won't need it. You'll keep me warm," and drifted on autopilot into his arms.

Jack leaned back slightly. "Lemon, did you just flirt with me?"

She smirked. "It's the champagne," she insisted, "so don't get used to it."

Siiiiiiigh! YOU ARE KILLING ME WITH THE PRETTY SLOW-DANCING, MADAM. And You Belong To Me -- that's almost cruel in its loveliness. Darnit, Jenna!!

(And, bwahaha, I love that Frank is cutting the cake. Of course he is.)
a.: GA; i'm the mother fucking princess;regalish on June 30th, 2007 08:37 pm (UTC)

And I've heard so many versions of "You Belong To Me," but none of them own my soul as much as Patsy's. She's just wonderul.

(*giggle* I had to bring Frank in, if only for that purpose. I even wanted to add a bit about how his trucker hat for the wedding would say "More Cake" but I had NO idea how to work that in, hahahaha!)

I'm reading this in one sitting too (I promised myself I'd stop halfway...or when they kissed...whenever came first...) but this is too good to stop! ThankU!!!

I'm totally getting how she's so confused and falling in love with him so fast at the same time. Who wouldn't?!
