We're After the Same Rainbow's End [The Office; Michael/Jan]
TITLE: We're After the Same Rainbow's End
FANDOM: The Office
PAIRING: Michael/Jan
NOTES: nobodysbizathon prompt: a modest proposal
SPOILERS: None; AU season 3
SUMMARY: Wherever you're going, I'm going your way.

"Jan... hey, Jan." A whisper breaks through the dark and silence of her bedroom.

With eyes still closed, she whispers back, "Sleeping, Michael."

"No you're not. If you were, you wouldn't have answered."

She closes her eyes a little tighter and sighs out through her nose. "What is it?" Reluctantly, she rolls onto her other side, still encased in the circle of his arms as she faces him.

He pouts a little as he tells her, "I can't sleep."

Jan smiles a little. "That's because you're talking, Michael." Placing a hand over his eyes, she drags it down slowly, willing them closed. "Just shut your eyes..." she leans in and lets her lips tease his as she adds, "and your mouth... and soon you'll fall asleep."

But it doesn't work. Which she should have expected. As soon as her hand leaves his eyes, they pop open again, wide and twinkling in the darkness. She can still see the green in them. "Seriously, I can't sleep. Will you sing to me?"

"Oh Michael..." She starts to turn on her side again, but his hand on her shoulder stops her.

"No, come on. That'll work, I promise."

She chuckles at the pure insanity of the situation. "No it won't, Michael. Besides, how old are you?"

"Please, Jan?"

"You know you've got an amazing voice, come on. Sing me to sleep."

Jan sighs, closes her eyes again while rolling onto her back, and it takes mere seconds before Michael rests his head on her shoulder. She slips her fingers into his hair, closing them around the strands and pulling them through before starting the process again. Quietly, she asks, "What do you want me to sing?"

"That one moon song."

She furrows her brow toward the slow-spinning ceiling fan. "Moon song?"

"About the moon and the river and the rainbow."

After a moment, realization settles in and she smiles... clears her throat softly and begins to sing one of her favorite songs, from one of her favorite movies, low and soft.

"Moon river, wider than a mile... I'm crossing you in style someday..."

Michael sighs against her, snuggles a little closer and she can feel his smile against her shoulder.

"Oh dream maker, you heart breaker; wherever you're going, I'm going your way."

He hums softly, draping an arm across her, slipping his hand just under her camisole and stroking her stomach softly.

"Two drifters, off to see the world... there's such a lot of world to see..."

"Jan, I love you," he murmurs, and she can hear the sleep settling in to his voice. She smiles.

"We're after the same rainbow's end, waiting 'round the bend... my huckleberry friend, moon river and me."

She gives his hair one more stroke and kisses his forehead, closing her eyes.

She chuckles. "Michael, I told you it wouldn't work. Come on, just go to sleep now. We've both got work tomorrow."

At least a minute ticks by in silence while Jan waits for him to answer. She thinks, hopes, that he's maybe fallen asleep, before she hears his voice again... practically a whisper.

"Marry me."

And though her heart jumps into her throat at the simple two-word sentence, Jan surprisingly feels none of the panic she would've felt a month or two ago. Instead, she smiles; she kisses his forehead and strokes his hair again, murmuring simply, "Let's sleep first."

Thank you so much for writing this and reminding me how much I love this couple. Even though they feel dead, I still have hope.

Aww, thanks a bunch for commenting! I really appreciate it, especially since the support for this couple has become thread-bare.

Even though they feel dead, I still have hope. ♥ Well said. And, me too. Me too.

Oh. My. God. I can't believe you wrote an M/J fic! I can't believe anybody wrote an M/J fic! It's been far too loooong, and this couple has been screwed up sooo badly!

This was lovely. I'm glad you wrote it and shared it with the rest of those of us that still have hope that one day they'll bring her back.

Thank you so so much!! I have been all big-time nostalgic for the good days, so I kinda had to write this.

I'm so glad you liked it! Like you, I also hope they'll bring Jan back -- the real Jan. :)

This brings back good memories! Sad that this had to turn into "AU"; damn you, writers. Very good ficlet; thanks for sharing it.

Thanks so much! I'm bummed that I had to categorize this as AU too :( Stupid writers, messing up a badass character like our Lady Levinson.

I'm glad you liked this fic! Thanks again for the comment :)

Just found this and love it so much. I sing this song to both of my kids when I need them to rest, so seeing it here in connection with my ship is just a wonderful collision of worlds. Well done! Wish it were not AU.

Thank you so much! "Moon River" is just such a gorgeous song, I felt compelled to use it somewhere. (And if I ever have children, that's likely to be a lullaby for them as well!)

Wish it were not AU. Me too, me too. Those poor characters, wrecked beyond belief :(
