*****

Giles hadn't wanted to return to Sunnydale; when his last familial link was in the ground... his would-be daughter, buried just yards away from his would-be wife... he had called it quits. Sunnydale had been nothing but a bad omen. There had been only two good things to come out of it, and both of them had met tragic ends. He had vowed to leave the town behind and head back to where he came from; perhaps try to resume some semblance of a life, no matter how hollow it would inevitably be.

He'd been in England a mere two weeks before he'd gotten Willow's call. Buffy, that would-be daughter he never got to say a proper goodbye to, was alive again. Though he hadn't exactly been pleased with the means in which she'd been brought back to life, he was thrilled that her every breath had been restored. Of course he had no choice but to return, to see her again. To see them all again really, though he would never admit to such a yearning aloud.

He'd grown fond of them all, all of the friends that surrounded his Slayer, supported her and came to her aid in the fight against the nocturnal creatures Sunnydale seemed to attract like a swarm of locusts. Buffy's circle had come to mean something to him; nieces and nephews, almost. Almost being the operative word, for there was one in the group that had come to stand out to him over the past year. One that had come to mean just a little bit more than what was perhaps proper.

At first, he didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary. Sure, she was a bit out of the ordinary, but that was to be expected of a former demon suddenly forced to live as a human. Everything to her had been brand new, the entire world around her a sudden steep learning curve that she had to attempt to keep up with. And to her credit, she had done extraordinarily well, given the circumstances. She was needled endlessly about her bluntness and Giles was not exempt from such needlings, though over time... he secretly began to find that bluntness somewhat appealing. Refreshing, in a way. Anya called it like she saw it, and more often than not hit the nail on the head, minus the sugar-coating the others had been taught to use.

When he took over The Magic Box and she had been prodding him relentlessly for a job, he initially had said yes only as a means of getting her off his back. Little did he know she'd become such a valuable asset to his shop. She had a surprising knack for bookkeeping and quite the business head, while he focused more on interpersonal relations with the customers. He began to notice that they worked well as a team; they worked well together, despite her other knack: getting under his skin.

And it was upon noticing how she got under his skin that Giles began to wonder if perhaps she was starting to endear herself to him when he really should have been annoyed by her. If she was beginning to mean more to him than he perhaps wanted her to. It was, after all, the same way that long-lost, would-be wife got to him. She started by stirring his ire to a boiling point, challenging him on his ways of life and digging into him, toying with him. She started to get under his skin after not long at all and before he knew it, he had grown disconcertingly fond of her.

And now he saw history repeating itself; the current moment, in particular. After stealing a few minutes with Buffy, to talk with her and find out how she was coping with being brought back to life, he left the training room in back to speak with the gang. Her voice rang out a rather musical, heartwarming, "Giles..." and he knew he was a goner.

The music notes of her voice were familiar -- he'd heard the song before, years ago, with just slightly different lyrics. Whereas years before it had been his first name uttered in that lilting melody, now it was his surname. But the feelings stirred by the sound remained the same.

Then she threw herself at him... literally... caught him off-guard and unprepared as she crushed him in a hug. He chuckled and did what he always did when she threw her arms around him -- he held her in return, matching the strength of her embrace, and tried to tell himself over and over that he didn't feel anything for her. That this wasn't a repeat of his lost love.

"We missed you," she told him, voice still melodious and still doing things to his heart he wished it wouldn't.

He patted her back and discreetly smelled the hair that tickled his face, the citrus scent that clung to him almost as tightly as she did. She pulled back from him and gripped his arms tightly, telling him in a chipper but firm tone that he couldn't have the store back. For a moment he considered the idea that she was feeling his biceps, then dismissed the silly thought just as quickly as it had come to him. He reciprocated the touch, bringing his hands to her upper arms and giving the soft skin a stroke, avoiding her eyes as he addressed the others.

No. The melody of her voice would not trip him up like the last one. The one that had been so tragically ripped from him. He would not be hypnotized by her song or her addictive personality. He didn't want this one to meet a tragic end. He didn't want to bury another. So he had to focus on the here and now. His Slayer, his Buffy, his surrogate daughter was back once again and it seemed there was work to be done as always.

So the next time Anya called his name, Giles forced himself to ignore the music notes in her voice... convincing himself that she meant nothing more to him than the others, and just hoped that he could one day get his still-skipping heart to believe the same.

Really interesting link between Jenny and Anya -- and a lovely shading of canon.

Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed this. I've got a bunch of your Giles/Anya fics saved up to read (mostly because some of them are post-series, and I haven't finished season six yet lol) and a couple that I have already read, but haven't had a chance to comment yet. You're a very talented author!

Aww, that was lovely! I particularly liked the bit where Giles pondered whether she was feeling his biceps, because he is just adorably vain enough to think such a thing (and, of course, self-doubting enough to immediately dismiss it).

Question. Have you seen season 7 yet? I can't remember if you have or not. That was really the season when I started thinking about Giles/Anya in a romantic way (mostly because Buffy/Giles was killing my soul at that point).

Hee, thank you! Figured that might be a Giles thing :D :D

Answer. I have not seen season 7 yet; I'm just about to start disc 5 of season six. Hell's Bells is the next episode to watch, in fact, and I'm already dreaming up melodramatic scenarios where Anya flees to England after being left at the altar and runs straight to Giles. Haha.

I hear they get kinda epic in season 7 but I don't know specifics. I've seen icons of him hurt and her holding his hand, but other than that, I remain spoiler-free. I kind of want to know, just so I can start loading up on fic, but I also kind of don't; I kinda want to see it unfold and steal my heart (and then shatter it) the same way Giles/Jenny did.

his would-be daughter, buried just yards away from his would-be wife

Ouch. That one really hurt. Very nice story, and completely believable.

Your discretely should be discreetly. I always mix 'em, myself.

Thanks very much! I enjoy writing Giles, so this was fun getting to dive in to a "new" pairing (normally I just write Giles/Jenny) from his POV. :)
