The day starts with Liz bumping into Jack - rather literally - on her way into work. A discussion (argument) then begins almost immediately about the latest Tracy debacle as they go inside.

"Jack, you can't let him leave the show to become a papaya wrangler. That's not even a thing."

"If Tracy believes it is, then who am I to shatter his dream, Lemon? Besides, you should know Tracy by now: it will take mere days for him to tire of the lost art of papaya wrangling--"

"Still not a thing even when you call it an art."

"--and then he'll be back, eager to perform again. He'll come back revitalized. If you think about it, this would be a good move for the show."

"Ugh." She trudges onto the elevator behind him as unfemininely as she can manage in a dress and peep-toe pumps. It occurs to her for a moment that it's the outfit she was wearing when the adoption lady stopped by the show. But she tries not to think about that for more than a second. "Why did I even let you bring Tracy onto the show?"

"Because he's the third heat," Jack reminds her, leaning into her slightly as they stand together in the center of the elevator.

Liz just shakes her head and looks up at the numbers lighting up.

Only a moment later, she hears the elevator groan in a way that's probably not good; she looks up into Jack's face to see if he rigged another one, but he looks genuinely concerned, too. Then the elevator rumbles and the lights black out as the car pitches to one side, sending them both flying.

Jack lands with an "Oof!" against the side wall and Liz cries out as she flies toward him. Luckily, Jack has enough sense to catch her against him, his hands on her hips holding her steady -- almost so tightly she worries about bruises.

Her hands land on his chest, bracing herself, and for a moment they just catch their breath from the ordeal. She can feel his lips near hers in the pitch black of the elevator car as he asks her breathlessly, "Are you okay?"

She nods into the dark, then realizes he probably can't see her do this. "Yeah, I think so. Are you?"

"My back hit the bar on the wall fairly hard, but yes. I'm fine."

"Good. What the hell happened?" Her heart is still slamming in her chest, and her stomach starts to tumble when she realizes Jack still has his hands on her hips and she's still got hers on his chest. Like their soap opera moment re-enacted in a blackened elevator.

"I'm not certain. I'll call for help."

She feels his hands slip away from her as he moves to make the call. As he does this, Liz paces the width of the elevator and ponders why her stomach is still tumbling away.

"They say one of the cables came loose," Jack reports, effectively ripping her from her thoughts in a rather violent way.

"What?" She follows the sound of his voice, reaching her hand up to figure out where he is (better up than down - accidentally bumping things southward was much more awkward). When it covers his face and he moves it to his cheek, she can't help the smile.

"One of the cables came loose, but they're sending a crew up to fix it."

"So... we won't die or anything, right?"

"I don't believe so, no. I'd say we have a fairly good chance of surviving this."

"Jack, be serious."

"I am. Anything can go wrong in a situation such as this, Lemon. But I'm confident that we'll make it out of this alive."

"And somehow that does nothing to inspire confidence from my end."

It feels like hours tick by as they wait for the elevator to be fixed. By now their eyes have adjusted to the dark and they have sat down beside each other against the back wall of the elevator. Liz has written three new sketches in her head while Jack goes on and on about the latest microwave pitch. He makes sure to tell her they're including Button Classic, which makes her happy in a ridiculous sort of way.

"Are we really in some kind of danger?" she feels compelled to ask him a short while later.

"I wasn't lying when I said that we were, Lemon," he tells her, and her stomach knots up. When his hand finds hers in the dark, though, squeezing in reassurance, he adds, "but you should know that I have the best crew working on it to ensure our safety."

"Yes." Softer, almost in a whisper, he tells her, "I would never let anything happen to you."

Liz looks over at him in the dark, heart giving a faint flutter at his vow, despite the fact that he's using his melodramatic soap-opera voice. "Thanks, Jack," she murmurs. After a beat, she teases, "Is it because I'm the only woman you've ever really loved?"

And when Jack slowly turns to glare, she can't help the wicked grin as she squeezes his hand.
