Below the Surface [CSI/The X-Files; Grissom/Catherine, Mulder/Scully]
TITLE: Below the Surface
CHAPTER 1: Beyond Purview
FANDOM(S): CSI, The X-Files
PAIRING(S): Mulder/Scully, Grissom/Catherine
SPOILERS: [CSI: Fourth season]; [X-Files: Seventh season]
RATING: R (for language, violence, etc.)
SUMMARY: "This is beyond my purview as a medical professional. I've never seen anything like it before."

"So we've got four bodies, three John and one Jane Doe," Grissom told the team as he walked down the CSI corridors ahead of them all. "And two teens at the crime scene."

"Quadruple homicide?" Sara questioned, furrowing her brow.

"Possibly," Catherine murmured, echoing the brunette's expression though she stood at the head of the group beside Grissom. "Either that or four separate homicides and subsequent body dumps."

"Or," Nick broke in, "It could be coincidental."

Warrick raised his eyebrows skeptically. "A quadruple drowning accident? Don't think so, man."

"Guys, I want you to split up," Grissom informed his 'kids.' "Examine the victims' clothes for trace evidence... though most or all have probably been washed away. Nick, you and Sara take two, Warrick... find Greg and take two."

The kids nodded and set off, Nick and Sara heading to the evidence room while Warrick headed to DNA in search of Greg. Grissom then gently grabbed Catherine's elbow, and she leaned toward his ear, her entire body gravitating toward him. "And what are we gonna do?" she asked in a low voice.

He repressed a shudder at the feel of her breath tickling his face, and smiled winningly at her. "We, my dear, have a date..." When she raised her eyebrow at him, he smirked. "With Doc Robbins."

She grinned her dazzling, pearly grin at him, and allowed him to lead her to the morgue by the arm as she sighed wistfully, "How romantic."

"Greggo, come on!" Warrick beckoned the young lab tech with a jerk of his chin.

Greg immediately jumped off his chair, eyes aglow in excitement. "Where? Out in the field? Do I get to go out in the field with you guys?"

Warrick smiled at his enthusiasm to be a 'real CSI.' "Uh, not exactly. Grissom and Catherine found four bodies in Lake Mead tonight, and we need to examine the victims' clothes for trace evidence."

"Cool!" Greg exclaimed. "I'll get my goggles!"

Warrick, already halfway out the door, paused midstep and spun on his heel, eyeing the lab rat questioningly. "Goggles? What do you need goggles for? I told you we're not gonna be in the field... we're not going to the lake, Greg."

"I know, man, I know," he replied, and pulled out what looked like a very bulky, high-tech pair of binoculars. "I was talking about these goggles!"

Warrick eyed the contraption warily. "What the hell are those?"

Greg grinned brightly, boyishly. "Like 'em? I ordered 'em special from this spy magazine thingy I subscribe to... they're ultra-magnifying goggles, AND..." He pulled them on over his head and flipped a switch on the side, the goggles emitting a green glow. "They're night vision goggles too! It's a two-in-one deal!"

"How much did you pay for those?"

Greg shrugged, his tone nonchalant. "Just a few hundred dollars. Every CSI should have a pair, don'tcha think?"

Warrick merely rolled his eyes and headed for the evidence room, Greg bouncing and skipping after him, calling, "Come on, man! If you ask real nice, I'll let you try 'em!"

Nick and Sara, side-by-side, leaned over two different sets of clothes in the layout room... their faces hovering inches above the material... both peering at the clothes through their magnifying glasses. "Anything yet?" Sara asked, without removing her eyes from the pair of bootcut jeans she was currently inspecting.

"No, nothin'," Nick drawled. He glanced up at his brunette companion. "You?"

"Nope," she sighed, and glanced up to meet Nick's Texan charm and his calm, chocolate eyes. She shook her head. "Any evidence that was on these clothes is long gone by now. We'd have to drain Lake Mead if we want to find anything."

Nick nodded slowly, then both attention spans diverted as Greg popped into the room excitedly. Both CSIs furrowed their brows at the sight of a bulky, black pair of binoculars over Greg's eyes... making him look like some sort of space alien. Nick chuckled. "What are those, Greggo?"

"Don't ask," Warrick sighed, appearing in the doorway behind the over-zealous lab rat.

Nick and Sara shared a glance and a grin, before watching Greg hover over the clothes in his goggles. "These things can magnify up to two-hundred times," he spouted off, practically crawling on the layout table to inspect the clothes.

"That's, uh, good... Greg..." Nick muttered, his brow furrowed as he shared another grin with Sara... their eyes asking each other just what the hell was up with their lab tech.

Greg giggled to himself. "I LOVE these things!" And he putzed with the buttons on his goggles a few more times, the grins and leery stares of the other CSIs flying clear over his head.

"Doc," Grissom greeted, swinging open the morgue's double doors, then gesturing gallantly for Catherine to enter first. She tossed him a smile over her shoulder briefly before greeting Doc Robbins.

"Gil... Catherine..." he greeted them, standing at the end of a row of four cadavers, all covered by sheets up to their collarbones.

"What's on the menu for us today?" Grissom asked, glancing down at the body nearest Doc Robbins.

"Well Gil, as Johnny Carson once said... this is weird, wild stuff."

"How so?" Catherine asked, chuckling slightly at the good doctor's choice of quotation.

"Catherine, I don't even know where to begin," he sighed, leaning on his crutch.

The senior CSIs eyed him for an extended moment, before Grissom replied, "The beginning works just fine for us, Doc."

"Well, here's the problem. I can't determine a cause of death for any victims, although, judging by the presence or absence of rigor mortis, and coloring of the skin, skin temperature, etcetera... I was able to determine times of death." He sighed. "Although, those will be vague, at best."

Catherine furrowed her brow. "Why... can't you determine cause of death?" she asked slowly, eyeing each of the cadavers without moving her head.

"Because..." He reached for the first cadaver, spreading the 'Y' incision he previously made, to expose the victim's insides. "None of these victims have internal organs."

Grissom, who normally wore a stoic expression during the most oddball cases, stared at the doctor with eyes wide as saucers. "None of them? There is not one organ in any of these four bodies?"

Doc Robbins shook his head slowly. "Not a one."

Grissom shook his head in response, his tone incredulous. "Brain, heart... pancreas?"

Catherine opened her mouth, and it contorted in various shapes, as if she was struggling to form a question... but coming up empty. She finally managed a breathless, "How?"

"Honestly Catherine, I don't know. This is beyond my purview as a medical professional. I've never seen anything like it before."

"There's no way these people could have survived even a split-second without ANY internal organs!" Grissom exclaimed. "They wouldn't have even survived in the womb like this!"

"And if they could have," Catherine murmured, "Then each of them is a scientific anomaly."

"I don't believe these people have lived without internal organs," Robbins replied to Catherine. "If you look closely, you can see hemorrhagic tissue where the organs are supposed to be. They were somehow removed peri-mortem."

"How?" Grissom asked, leaning over the bodies. "We found these bodies in one piece. No bullet holes, no stab wounds... nothing."

"The one thing I did find on each of the victims was trauma around the navel area."

"Belly button?" Catherine questioned, to which Robbins nodded. "Well, there's no way someone can just dig in through the belly button and grab all of a person's internal organs."

Grissom smirked briefly at his partner. "You paint quite the picture, Cath," he quipped, and she glared facetiously in response.

"If you look at these contusions around the navel, it looks like--"

"A hickey?" Catherine's incredulous tone sounded once again.

Robbins nodded while Grissom leaned closer for a better look at the bruising, and Catherine stepped back, waving her arms. "Okay... just hang on." She waited until both men's eyes were on her, before continuing. "Now, I've been given some pretty ugly hickeys in my day," she sighed, "But not once has a guy tried to suck all the vital organs out of my body."

While Grissom fought to hold in a grin, Robbins himself smirked at the strawberry-blonde. "Catherine, I don't actually think a human could have done this. No human can produce that much suction."

"And I highly doubt any animal could, either," Grissom chimed in.

"Well, what the hell are we dealing with, here?" Catherine asked, tone pregnant with mingling frustration and confusion. "Some big-ass leech with more suction power than a Hoover?"

Grissom smirked, adoring her look of utter exasperation... knowing she hated not being able to wrap her mind around a case. "I don't think there are leeches big enough to pull that off, Cath."

"What, then?" she asked, "Aliens?" She chuckled at the absurdity of such a thing.

When Grissom and Doc Robbins shared a knowing look, Catherine's eyes grew wide. "Oh, you have got to be kidding me..."

Grissom, wearing a pensive expression -- brow furrowed while he pursed his lips -- settled his hand on the small of Catherine's back and began to lead her out of the morgue, keeping his eyes locked with Robbins'. "Doc, could you call the Sheriff and inform him of your findings, please?"

Catherine, looking shell-shocked, stared up at Grissom with wide eyes while he continued to lead her out. "Gil?"

She glanced back over her shoulder and met Doc Robbins' eyes, her own pleading with him to give her an inkling as to what was going on, but he merely frowned thoughtfully and reached for the phone.

You is awesome. WRITE MOAR. It's refreshing to read something that actually has believable dialogue and sounds like Catherine/Grissom. I think that's what a lot of fics lately lack. Can't wait to see Mulder/Scully thrown into the mix.
