Becoming the Donaghys [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Becoming the Donaghys
CHAPTER 5: One Step at a Time
FANDOM: 30 Rock
SPOILERS: My own fic, Being a Donaghy

Over the course of the weekend, Liz felt better and better about the whole pregnancy thing. Especially since Jack was so damn enthusiastic about it. On a few occasions, seeing him smile about the pregnancy brought to mind Bianca's words to her from a year ago -- "A little late-in-life baby he can parade around Nantucket." Well, the Nantucket thing wasn't going to happen (and who goes to Nantucket anyway?), but she could definitely imagine Jack parading their child around, holding him up in the air like Simba.

She reminded herself to talk to him about possibly not doing that. It sounded awfully dangerous.

There was plenty of "celebrating," though no celebration was as intense as the night she told him. It was kinda weird, how intense it was -- like the fact that she was carrying a baby they'd made together suddenly made a difference and heightened the emotion or something. Weird. But good.

Really good.

So good that she walked into work on Monday feeling lighter than air -- she even brought in donuts for her writing staff. Frank immediately went to the box and poked one of the donuts suspiciously, like he was testing for a bomb or something. "Did you bring these, Liz?"

"Yeah!" She smiled at him brightly and nudged his shoulder. "Go ahead and eat up, Frank!"

"Did I do something wrong?"

"What? No! I just... thought donuts would be a nice treat for everyone on a Monday!"

While her writers exchanged wary glances with each other, Frank grabbed a donut with chocolate icing and sniffed it carefully. "Hmm. Doesn't smell like cyanide..."

Liz rolled her eyes. "I didn't poison the food, Frank. I got them from the bakery down the street."

"Did they poison them for you?" Lutz wanted to know.

Liz raised her eyebrows and exhaled, "Okay! Well, if you guys don't want the donuts..." She grabbed the donut from Frank's hand and took a bite out of it, closing the lid on the box. "I will just eat them all myself." She totally would, too. She picked up the box as if she needed to prove it to them, and started carrying it to her office.

That was when her writing staff stopped her with various shouts of "Liz, wait!" and "Okay fine, Liz, we believe you!"

She smirked and left the box on the conference table, taking her donut with her into her office. She hummed lightly to herself and didn't even know why. She had no idea what she was humming, either. It just felt nice to hum.

It really was disconcerting being this happy, though. She needed something to bring her back down.

As if in answer, her door opened and Jenna burst in, "Liz! Liz, can I perform a song on the show next week?"

Liz sighed. "What song, Jenna? And no. Probably not."

"Please? It's my newest single! It's called 'Department Store Guy.' Remember him?"

Liz made a face, and Jenna stared at her as if she was shocked she didn't recognize the nameless guy from the description.

"Oh come on, you remember! That guy I met at Macy's? And I pretended I had a boyfriend that needed a new suit so he'd help me?"

"Oh right, that guy." She still had no clue who Jenna was talking about.

"Yeah. Well, I wrote the song after that amazing week I went out with him. And my publicist says it's gonna be even bigger than 'Muffin Top.' He said it could very well get to number two in Belgium. 'Muffin Top' only got to number four."

Liz raised her eyebrows in feigned awe. "Wow, that's... great!"

"I could sing a couple bars for you, if--"

"No!" Liz blurted quickly, holding up her hands. Then, catching herself, she smiled. "I mean... don't ruin the surprise for me, I wanna hear you do it on the show!"

Jenna's eyes lit up. "So you'll let me do it?"

"Yeah, absolutely! Sure." It was so easy to fake excitement with Jenna that it wasn't even fun anymore. "I mean, I have to run it by Jack first, but... y'know, if he says yes then you're good to go!"

"Oh! Great! And since you're married to him, this'll be a piece of cake!" Jenna clapped excitedly and hugged Liz. "Oh, see? This is why it pays to marry your boss!"

Liz feigned a smile. "Yeah, that was definitely why I married him."

Her saving grace, in the form of Pete Hornberger, finally came through the door. "Hey Liz? I had a coupla questions for you about that new product integration sketch we have to do?"

"Oh sure, come on in. Jenna?"

Jenna nodded, catching the hint. Thank God. "Got it. I should get back down to rehearsal anyway." She smiled warmly. "Thanks again, Liz, for letting me do the song. You're such a good friend." She nudged Pete. "Pete, did you hear? Liz is gonna let me perform my new single on the show!"

"Really? Wow," Pete faked excitement about as well as Liz did. "That's awesome, Jenna."

As she bounced happily out the door, Pete took hold of the doorknob and called after her, "I can't wait to hear it!" Then, once he'd shut the door, he turned to Liz looking panicked. "You're not actually letting her sing on the show, are you?"

Liz made a face. "No! Of course not."

"Thank God."

"I know." Then her features relaxed into a smile. "But I'll just let her think I'm on her side about it, and leave it up to Jack. And then when I tell her she can't do it, it'll be Jack's fault. And everybody wins, see?"

Pete frowned. "Is that... okay? Pinning the blame on your husband... who also just happens to be your boss? I don't remember seeing anything about it in the HR manuals."

She shrugged. "Well Jack won't care."

"Oh. Well that's... better. I think?"

Liz chuckled. "So what's up with this GE sketch?" She nodded at the legal pad and pencil he came in carrying.

"Oh!" He tossed the legal pad onto her desk -- blank. "There isn't one. I just made it up to get Jenna out of here."

"Pete, you are awesome. And I thank you." She bowed her head graciously.

Pete mimicked the gesture. "I accept your thanks. And I'm aware of my awesomeness." He grinned, then leaned forward slightly. "So... have you told Jack yet?"

Liz nodded. "I have, yes."

"And? How'd it go?"

Liz couldn't help the grin -- both at the memory of Jack's excitement, and at seeing the current excitement on Pete's face. "It went... surprisingly well."

"So he's excited?"

"Oh yes. He'll finally have an heir. And because, believe it or not, he said there's nobody else he'd rather have babies with."

"Well good for you guys. So what's next?"

Liz screwed up her face, puzzled. "Well... uh, the baby will be here in like 8 months or something. Is that what you're talking about?"

"No," he chuckled and shook his head at her. "You guys need to choose a doctor."

"Because it's just... what you do. You have to choose an OB/GYN that will do all of your appointments until delivery. And of course you have to think about getting a room ready for the baby, picking out a name, figuring out whether or not you guys will want to know the sex... stuff like that."

"Oh God, that's a lot." Liz was starting to feel panicky again like right before she told Jack. She tore a chunk out of her donut and chomped on it while she delved into thought.

"It'll be fine, Liz. Relax. And anyway, first things first."

When she looked up at him, Pete raised his eyebrows. "You have to make Jack say no to the whole Jenna singing thing."

"Pfft, yeah like that'll be tough," she scoffed, and rose to her feet. "And you're right. I need to worry about that first. I can worry about rooms and paint colors and baby names later, right?" She started for the door.

Pete nodded. "Absolutely. Take things one step at a time."

"One step at a time, yes! Great." She wished she felt as non-panicky as she sounded.

Liz took full advantage of her wifely privileges when it came to Jonathan, and strode right past him to Jack's door, only giving a cursory backwards glance to make sure she wasn't truly disturbing anything. When she got a nod from Jonathan, she knocked on Jack's door and poked her head inside, calling his name.

He waved her in, "Darling," before addressing who he was on the phone with. "No, not you, Vice President Cheney." He paused, nodding. "Yes, I am fond of you. But I was addressing my wife." Another pause. "Very well. We'll follow up tomorrow afternoon." After hanging up, he smiled at Liz and leaned in for a kiss. "I apologize, Lemon. That was--"

"Cheney, yeah. I know."

"I get the impression he'll now want me to call him 'Darling' anytime we speak."

"Well, there are worse things he could be called," Liz pointed out.

"Lemon, this is no time for you to get into another of your neo-hippie moods. What can I do for you?"

Pete's advice flowed back to her: One step at a time. She took a breath. "Well, first... whatever I'm about to ask you, I need you to say no to it."

"Very well."

"Jenna wants to sing on the show."

"What song?"

She huffed. "Jack, you're just supposed to say no."

He merely shrugged, his face all innocence. "I haven't been asked a question yet."

She rolled her eyes; maybe this 'one step at a time' thing would be easier than she thought. If Jack kept annoying her like this, it would take her mind off all the baby stuff. "Jenna has a new single about some guy she met in a department store and she wants to sing it on the show. Can she do it?"

Jack pondered this a moment, and Liz widened her eyes. Just when she was losing faith in him, he replied with a simple, "No."

Then she just had to know. "Why did you take so long to answer?"

"Because then if my answer gets back to Jenna, I can honestly tell her I gave it some thought."

"Ahhh." She grinned and leaned in for a kiss. "You're kinda crafty."

"So I've been told." His hand lingered on the small of her back, rubbing in gentle circles, as he assessed the look on her face. "Your forehead appears more oily than usual. Are you feeling stressed about something?"

She sighed, both at his ability to read her and insult her so easily. "Just... all of this stuff."

"Such as...?"

"All of the baby stuff, Jack. Name-picking, paint colors, crib styles, doctor-picking, it's all just... coming at me at a million miles an hour and I feel like I can't relax."

"Oh Lemon, you should relax, it's nothing to get worried about." He guided her over to his couch and assisted her in sitting down, as if she was eight months along already or something.

She threw him a look up through her lashes. "Nothing to get worried about? Seriously? You've never had a baby before."

He shook his head. "No, but I'm quite confident that everything will be okay. You and I both have money, status, good genes -- what is there to worry about?"

"So much, Jack. So much. First of all, my main concern is having a huge eight-pound... thing... coming out of my lady parts. Second of all--"

"Well Lemon, to attend to your 'first of all,' there are things that will help with that. Epidurals for one. And if you're truly frightened about vaginal tearing--"

She made a face. "Can you not say that please? It makes me not want to kiss you ever again."

"Very well. If you're concerned about something coming out of your lady parts, to borrow a phrase, I could always see if Leo can schedule you for vaginal enlargement surgery."

"What? They actually have those?" She was starting to wonder why she came up here in the first place.

"Of course they do, according to Leo." Then, Jack furrowed his brows and cut his eyes to the side, pondering. "Of course, he made mention of it shortly after he'd taken a green pill."

"Ugh." She shook her head. "Second of all, there's the matter of choosing an OB/GYN. That's a pretty big deal, Jack. We have to find someone that's going to do all of my appointments up until and possibly including delivery," and before he could so much as open his mouth, she held up a finger, "and don't you dare suggest Spaceman. I'd rather have Tracy deliver the baby."

Jack nodded. "He did take those online gynecology courses, but no." He reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, producing a business card. "I think I already found us a doctor, Lemon. It's a woman, an OB/GYN -- she's supposed to be the best in her field at Saint Vincent's."

Liz smiled at her husband as she took the card from him. "You actually did research on this for me?"

"Of course I did," he smiled right back.

Still smiling, she glanced down at the card. "Doctor Alexandra..." and the smile promptly dropped, "Cavewoman. Cavewoman?! Jack... no. No way."

"It's Cah-vuh-vohman, Lemon. It's Dutch. And I assure you, the pronounced brow ridge is completely coincidental."

Liz groaned. "No, Jack. We are getting a doctor with a real name. I will pick the doctor."

He nodded and took the card back. "Very well."

"But for right now, I have to get back downstairs and tell Jenna that you won't let her sing."

"And I'll break the news to Alexandra gently," he promised her.

Rolling her eyes, Liz quickly kissed her husband on the cheek and headed back downstairs.

Excellent, lol. I love this series.
I must say this though: Liz ate something that Frank touched?! *shudders*

This cracked me up though:

"and don't you dare suggest Spaceman. I'd rather have Tracy deliver the baby."

Jack nodded. "He did take those online gynecology courses, but no."

I could definitely see them having this conversation.. ♥

Genius. Especially the pronounciation. Sheer genius.

Hee, that was great. Love Jenna's explanation of her song. And Dr. Cavewoman.

Also, this:

"I get the impression he'll now want me to call him 'Darling' anytime we speak."

"Well, there are worse things he could be called," Liz pointed out.

"Lemon, this is no time for you to get into another of your neo-hippie moods. What can I do for you?"

Oh, yay! This is so spot on. I can totally see Liz entering "What to Expect When You're Expecting" territory and becoming even more neurotic.
