Like Breathing Out and Breathing In [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Like Breathing Out and Breathing In
FANDOM: 30 Rock
SPOILERS: Cooter (2.15)

There's always been a reason to hate musical theatre. The pretention, the oversized egos with voices to match, the flamboyant costumes and makeup that's impossible to get off. But the real reason to hate musical theatre, or at least the reason at the forefront of a longer list of reasons, is this: musical theatre has somehow managed to sum up my relationship with Liz Lemon.

Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. That is, most unfortunately, who we have become. Or who we've been from the start, I guess it's hard to say now. The point is that over the past two years, I suppose I've... grown accustomed to her face.

I had an inkling that I was developing feelings for her when my relationship with a Congresswoman -- who shall remain nameless -- came to an end. I realized I wasn't as upset about the relationship ending as I was about the fact that I hadn't been there to help Lemon with her decisions, to support her in her quest to purchase a home.

Those feelings quickly gave way to affection, and -- when the Rat King returned -- jealousy. He was easy to get rid of as his fifteen minutes ended the day before I bumped him from the show. And Lemon soon ousted him from her life after he tried to end hers by nearly throwing her onto some subway tracks. I still get chest pains just thinking about it.

From there the affection grew stronger, to the point of being infatuation by the time she threw her arms around me for the first time. This is a woman whose appearance used to perplex me -- hardly that of a 'typical woman' by anyone's standards and yet she was strangely captivating. That was the beginning, though. By the time she'd gotten business-drunk for the first time, I no longer thought she was strangely captivating, but naturally beautiful. In ways that Bianca or Phoebe could never have been.

She wonders why I didn't get mad at her, about any of the recent mishaps she's been at the root of -- the page six debacle and Geiss' diabetic coma. And all I tell her is that I have no reason to be mad at her, though we both know this isn't true. I simply cannot yet bring myself to voice aloud the real reason: that this has gone far past infatuation.

And so I find myself here, knocking on her door. Within seconds she's pulled it open and looks surprised, but happy to see me. And I feel my heart hammering in my chest, hammering home the simple fact that I've grown accustomed to her face. And that in the past several days I have missed her more than she could ever come to understand.

I ask her how she is and she smiles at me, lighting up that face I've grown accustomed to as she probably wonders just why I've flown hundreds of miles to check up on her. And I hope one day I'll be able to tell her.

I am in love with her.

Damned musical theatre.

Beautiful! Just, gah, beautiful!
In Pygmalion Eliza and Henry don't get married. In My Fair Lady it is implied they do. So what will happen with Jack and Liz???

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that :)

And as for our Jack and Liz, I just really hope that we get a hint that they'll get married in the series finale. So I'm hoping it's more MFL than Pygmalion :D

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it.

I highly suggest taking a stab at doing 30 Rock fic. It is quite intimidating, yes, but I dove in headfirst and it seemed to work out great :D

Funny. My brother is watching My Fair Lady for his school project, and I'm reading this fic. Cool.

Yay to Jack's POV!

Heee, yes you are right. Good musical theatre is good. Bad musical theatre is... well, kinda like nails on a chalkboard isn't it? Hahaha.

I'm glad you liked this, thank you so much!

aw, that is incredibly sweet! and what other explanation can there be for Jack rushing up from DC just to check in on her than real affection?
I'll have Rex Harrison talk-singing in my head for the rest of the day no ;)

Thank you so much! I'm happy you enjoyed it :)

And I agree with you -- there can really be no other explanation for Jack flying from D.C. to NYC to check on her. I mean heck, C.C. had to meet him halfway!

Oh yes yes yes!!! I will never tire of comparing them to Henry/Eliza, so I will always love any fic that mentions My Fair Lady. And this is my favorite song from the film. And I will always fantasize about Jack singing this in the very last episode (which I hope is a long ways away). This was a nice little look into Jack's head, I especially loved this bit:

By the time she'd gotten business-drunk for the first time, I no longer thought she was strangely captivating, but naturally beautiful. In ways that Bianca or Phoebe could never have been.

So perfect. And now I want to watch My Fair Lady again, and every time I watch it I write an epically long post in my journal about how Jack and Liz are just like them. And how I demand a My Fair Lady ending. Not a Pygmalion ending though. Boooooo George Bernard Shaw! Yay whoever adapted it into My Fair Lady and changed the ending!
a.: jack/liz; two sides of the same coinregalish on May 19th, 2008 09:45 pm (UTC)
Heee! It is so perfect for them, right? I think it may have been you who first mentioned the Henry/Liza thing to me, back when I was writing Being a Donaghy. So I looked into it and YES. IT IS SO PERFECT FOR THEM. Granted, I haven't quite gotten around to seeing My Fair Lady in its entirety, but hey - I'll get there! :D

You should write an epically long compare/contrast between Henry/Liza and Jack/Liz. I'd totally read that. Probably add it to my mems lol.

Here's hoping Jack and Liz get the My Fair Lady ending rather than Pygmalion! ♥
misslenaloo on May 13th, 2008 11:09 pm (UTC)
I have read this twice! It's so wonderful, to hear Jack lay it out there for us. Well, your Jack. :)

Also, if you think about it... Jack made C.C. meet him half way between DC and NYC. However, he went all the way to NYC to meet with Liz... in love with her indeed.

Aww, thank you so much! That means a lot to me to hear that you enjoyed this one.

And yes, you are totally right -- I actually just made the same point a few comments up about C.C. having to meet Jack halfway, but he willingly flies from D.C. to NYC just to check on Liz. That, to me, totally made the Jack-in-love-with-Liz theory canon. And I'm so glad, because it was totally gorgeous :D

!!! LOVE! I'm such a musical theatre dork, and the comparison is PERFECT for them. ♥

I hadn't been there to help Lemon with her decisions, to support her in her quest to purchase a home. This, somehow, was the most romantic thing ever.

And oh, the ending! Those last few lines. *sigh* It almost makes the day begin....

HEEE! I'm a musical theatre dork too, lol, so any chance I get to throw a song in there from a musical, I will do it by God.

And I'm so glad you liked this one! I'm really hoping to do a post-finale one next (as soon as my brain stops the constant fangirly screaming over Jack/Liz, LOL)!

Aww, I love it. I don't know why, but when my relationship with a Congresswoman -- who shall remain nameless made me lol. I could just hear that in Alec's voice.

Also, I love that you used "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" as a Jack/Liz thing. Because it really is. I've referenced 'My Fair Lady' a couple of times in my fic.

Aww, thanks so much! I'm glad you liked this, because it was so scary writing first-person Jack POV lol.

And "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is SO Jack/Liz. I think it was mentioned to me at some point last year while I was writing Being a Donaghy, and after researching it a little... yeah. Totally Jack/Liz.

I think I remember you mentioning it a few times here and there in fics! How can ya not, really? Let's just hope we get the My Fair Lady ending rather than Pygmalion :D

this was great. Gives me inspiration to write me own fic. hehe. Hopefully, when I do, I'll get as great as response as you, which is totally deserved. Nice job!

Thanks again :)
