Becoming the Donaghys [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Becoming the Donaghys
CHAPTER 4: Admitting is the First Step
FANDOM: 30 Rock
SPOILERS: My own fic, Being a Donaghy

"What a lovely idea, Lemon. A night out, just the two of us." Jack smiled at her warmly over their menus.

Liz flicked a (hopefully normal and not at all nervous) smile back at him and tried not to think about the little white stick in the bottom of her purse. "Well, I figured since you're working so hard, why not? And this one's on me."

"Well thank you. I do hope you'll at least let me pay for the drinks, though."

"Uhh, drinks?" For some reason, the whole drinks aspect totally slipped her mind when she came up with the nice-dinner-out ploy.

"Yes." Jack gestured for the waiter and ordered a bottle of Merlot. Within moments it was brought to their table and their glasses were filled. Jack smiled at her and held up his glass. What was it with him and toasts?

"To us."

Liz gave a closed-lip smile in return and clinked her glass against his. "Ditto."

While Jack drank, Liz looked down into her wine glass and thought about that stupid pee stick sitting in her purse. She needed to get drunk to make it through tonight, to give herself the courage to tell Jack. But of course she couldn't drink because of that stupid little pink plus sign. Well okay, and because of the doctor's appointment that confirmed it. She set her wine glass down slowly, discretely, while her husband looked around the restaurant and waxed poetic about the lighting. He'd notice if she just never drank her wine. She had to do something to get rid of it inconspicuously without drinking it.

A fake sneeze could work, she decided, and raised her arm slightly while she drew in a breath. She let it out with a loud, "Ah-CHOO!" and knocked her wine glass over.

Jack's head snapped around to look at her, concern on his face while their waiter ran over to help clean up the mess. "Lemon, are you okay?"

Liz nodded and pretended to wipe her nose on the cloth napkin that had been in her lap. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay." To the waiter, Liz asked, "Could I have a glass of water, please, instead of Merlot? Thanks."

Jack furrowed his brows. "Why did you pretend to sneeze?"

Liz frowned. "How did you know that was fake?"

Jack chuckled. "Liz, please. First of all, I can easily discern when you're faking, well... anything, really."

Liz rolled her eyes. "I've never faked... that. With you. If that's what you're referring to."

"Thank you. After all, there would be no need for you to. Second of all, that sounded nothing like the way someone sneezes. So what's going on?"

Liz took a deep breath. "Look, Jack, I--"

"Here's your water!" Their waiter had probably the worst timing. Ever. "Are you two ready to order?"

So before Jack could question what she'd been about to say, Liz jumped in with her order. There was still plenty of time.

Okay, so there was less time than she thought there was. After they'd ordered and their waiter left, Jack asked her what she'd been about to say. And she was too scared to come right out with it, so she pretended not to remember. So Jack talked about work and how he was in the running for taking over the Toaster Oven division. And Liz wanted to be happy for him, she really did, but she was far too distracted.

Any time he'd pause at the end of a story, Liz would start out with, "Jack, I have to--" but instead of finishing with 'tell you something,' she chickened out. "--go to the bathroom."

She did this seven times and then would immediately run to the bathroom to regroup. Any other time she tried to bring up the topic during their meal, she'd start with, "Jack, I'm--" but then ended up finishing with either a comment about how she was enjoying her steak, or how she was thirsty (after which she'd take a drink of water). By the time they'd finished their meal and the bill arrived, she still hadn't gotten any closer to telling him.

The butterflies in her stomach were going nuts and she knew they wouldn't calm down until she told him, but she just couldn't do it for some reason. She didn't know why exactly -- it wasn't like Jack would divorce her, but... they never really did have a conversation about kids. He knew she wanted them, but he'd never expressed his opinion on the subject. And now here they were, less than nine months away from being parents, and she didn't know how Jack was going to react.

While she signed the bill, Jack called for their limo driver to come and pick them up. By the time they got outside the limo was waiting for them at the curb, and Jack pulled the door open for his wife. As soon as the door shut behind them and the limo started pulling away, he turned to her and said, "Alright Lemon, talk to me."

"I get the impression that there's something you wish to tell me... and I think I know what it is."

Her stomach dropped. "Oh God, you do?"

Jack nodded and reached for her hand, twining their fingers together. "Yes. And I imagine it's hard admitting to having a bladder control problem, but--"

Liz frowned and shook her head. "Wait, what?"

Jack blinked at her. "A bladder control problem. You jumped up to use the restroom seven times." Without waiting for a response, he continued, "I just want you to know that I'm here for you and that I love you. We can call Leo and see if he has anything he can prescribe--"

"Jack, no. I do not have a bladder control problem." And even if she did, she sure as hell wouldn't take anything prescribed by Leo Spaceman.

"Lemon, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Admitting you have a problem is the first step toward recovery."

She made a face. What the hell was up with this dude she married? "No, Jack, that's alcoholism. Or a... PCP addiction or something." God he was frustrating sometimes. "That's not what I wanted to tell you."

"Then what is it?"

Edgy now, she just blurted it out. "I'm pregnant!"

Then she saw the look on Jack's face. She saw his eyes go wide and his eyebrows fly up. "You... you're what?"

Softer now, she squeezed his hand and repeated, "I'm pregnant." As if he was going to demand proof, she took the pregnancy test out of her purse and showed it to him.

His mouth formed a small, surprised 'oh' and stayed there. And she couldn't tell if he was looking at the pink plus sign or past it to the floor of the limo.

Liz watched his mouth open and close several times, as if he wanted to say something but didn't know what to say or how to say it. The silence was killing her and she hated that she couldn't read his expression right now.

When the limo stopped in front of their building, Liz nudged her husband toward the door. "Jack... we're home."

Still not saying anything, Jack nodded, and dazedly got out of the car before he extended his hand to pull her out. He walked her inside with his hand in its usual place at the small of her back, and the butterflies kept going nuts in Liz's stomach. Was he upset? Was he thrilled? Did he even know what day it was anymore?

The elevator ride up was uncomfortably silent, and by the time the doors opened and they went into their penthouse, Liz had reached her wit's end. "Jack, say something!" she practically begged as she followed him toward the master bedroom. "Seriously, because you not having anything to say really... weirds me out."

It was then that Jack spun around and, before Liz could discern what the look in his eyes meant, he swooped down and kissed her. Hard. Her hands flew to his face instinctively as she kissed back, and he guided her further into the bedroom with his hands on her waist.

"I can't believe it," he murmured against her lips while they each kicked their shoes off.

Liz smiled against him and loosened his tie. Breaking the kiss, she pulled the tie over his head and asked, "Is that a good 'I can't believe it' or a bad one?"

Jack's smile reached both his lips and his eyes, and he nodded slowly, stroking a hand across her stomach. "It's good, Lemon. Very good."

Liz couldn't help but smile back just as warmly, and she lifted her arms to let him pull her dress over her head. His lips hit her neck as the dress hit the floor and she closed her eyes, blindly unbuttoning his dress shirt. The rest of their clothing followed suit and soon Jack was guiding her slowly onto the bed, up to the pillows while he climbed in after her.

He slid his left hand across her stomach while he lavished her torso with kisses, and Liz figured she'd always be kinda turned on by the feel of his wedding band rasping against her skin. He kissed her stomach next and paused to smile at it. "So right now, Lemon, you're carrying my child inside you?"

Liz propped herself up on her elbows and grinned down at her husband. "Well, either yours or Frank's. Yeah."

Jack rolled his eyes at her ever so briefly before he asked, "How far along are you?"

"Six weeks."

"Astounding." He was still staring at her stomach like it held all the secrets of the universe.

Her heart skipped madly at the sight, but she couldn't resist teasing him, "So are we gonna do it, or did you just want to get naked and stare at my stomach?"

Jack sighed and slid up her body, making her tingle in all the right places as he did so. "Oh, Lemon," he breathed into her ear. "One of these days I'll teach you how to enjoy a romantic moment."

"Hey buddy, I had sex in a gondola with you. I think I'm doing fine in the romance department."

Instead of replying, Jack just smiled and hit the lights.

In the title, it really shouldn't be "the Donaghy's" it should be "the Donaghys," just saying.

Cute cute cute!
Any time he'd pause at the end of a story, Liz would start out with, "Jack, I have to--" but instead of finishing with 'tell you something,' she chickened out. "--go to the bathroom."
haha this reminds me of Friends, when Chandler was trying to tell Joey he was moving out. "He may think I'm sick..."
I really liked this one, can't wait for more :)
