In A New York Minute (Everything Can Change - God she hates this song) [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: In A New York Minute (Everything Can Change - God, she hates this song)
FANDOM: 30 Rock

In a New York minute, everything can change. Liz has always hated that song, for one specific reason: everything can change in a minute in any city. Why is New York singled out? Of course, when she thinks about this, In a Salt Lake City minute just doesn't have the same commercial appeal. And it would totally mess up the rhythm of the song. Why is she thinking about this now?

Ah yes. The balcony. The German TV station thing fell apart, as did Jack and C.C. Jack had been talking about giving up everything for love (for C.C.) and something had happened to Liz in that instant. She had the strongest urge to cry. And then in one of those stupid fucking New York minutes, everything changed.

The stupid song started playing in her head as she ran through what would happen if Jack left. She'd gotten so accustomed to seeing his face everyday, hearing that rasp as he constantly reminded her not to slouch, that she suddenly didn't know what she'd do without it - without him.

Once she knew for sure that Jack wasn't going anywhere, she calmed down considerably. In fact, she physically sighed in relief. Jack smiled at her and offered her a drink.

Instinctively she opened the French doors leading to his balcony; the night was just barely warm enough for them to indulge in this luxury. Jack brought out two glasses of red wine and handed one to her. They drank together comfortably while Jack lamented over his broken relationship with C.C. He told her he knew it never would have worked out, but there was a small part of him that wanted it to.

Again, something happened to Liz in that instant and again, she wanted to cry. She hated herself because of it, because it shouldn't matter what's going on in Jack's lovelife. But suddenly it did. Jack noticed her change in demeanor, she could tell, but he didn't comment on it.

"It was for the best," he said, and took a drink.

She looked up at him and silently wondered what he meant. He smiled down at her. "For some reason, Lemon, as much as I would've liked for it to work out, I know at the back of my mind that somewhere out there is a woman that's even better suited for me than C.C. was."

"Someone that's still my opposite, though. Over the past year or so, I've grown somewhat addicted to the friction one can find in a relationship with their opposite."

"Really?" Liz made herself take a drink, her stomach doing weird things.

"Mm-hmm. With C.C., the friction would have eventually gone away once we'd grown accustomed to each other."

"And you don't think that would happen with some other woman who's your opposite?"

Jack had shaken his head and taken another sip of his wine. "No." He sounded pretty damn certain. And then he had to go and say it. "No matter what, we'll always have friction."

Not wanting to put her foot in her mouth, Liz took in that comment for a moment, while she took in some more wine. "We?"

"Hmm?" Jack had glanced up at her as if unaware of what he'd said.

Liz smiled, gripping the stem of her glass tightly. "You said 'we.' Did you have someone specific in mind?"

Liz nodded, staring at Jack expectantly, but he didn't say anything more. And for a good minute or two, she resolved not to ask him. Once minute two hit though, curiosity got the better of her. "Who?"

And that question brings her to the moment she's in right now -- pressed against the brick wall of the building, standing on her tiptoes kissing Jack with her hands on his shoulders and his hands on her waist. And for some reason, at this moment all she can think of is Don Henley. It really weirds her out. But that song just starts up again in her head. In a New York minute, everything can change.

Jack grips her waist a little tighter and deepens the kiss, and Liz wonders why they haven't thought of doing this before. It feels great. Her stomach has stopped somersaulting (in the unpleasant way) and she no longer feels like she could cry about Jack's lovelife.

Because within a (New York) minute, suddenly she is Jack's lovelife. She's that woman who's opposite him that provides the kind of friction he craves.

Maybe Don Henley has a point. Maybe he's a genius.

Except for 'Desperado.'

It amazes me how much you always completely nail the tone of a show or a ship, no matter what it is you're writing. You can really adapt your style.

I loved this. ♥

& psst, this was ttly my first 30 Rock fic :D

Fantastic! I'm so glad you returned (albeit for a brief genius fic? Or for more? Please say more!) I was so hoping that someone would write a fic about the moment when he asked her if she wanted to get drunk.

Thanks so much! I've missed writing Jack and Liz so much. And there will definitely be more where this one came from, you can count on that :)

The moment you mention from 2x10 is one of my favorites; to me, just that miniscule exchange was SUCH a goldmine, fic-wise. That episode in general was huge in terms of paralleling Jack and Liz, and how they really are kindred spirits. I love it.

Wow, thank you so much, Gemma! A comment like that means the world to me because it is something that I continually strive for.

And I'm so glad you liked this! And YAY your first 30 Rock fic! I'm not kidding when I say to check out michellek's. She's amazing at nailing every single character.

Of course I'd love it if you'd give more of mine a read too ;) A new one's going up in a minute, as a matter of fact, lol!

This was brilliant, I loved it! And OMG I'M SO HAPPY YOU WROTE MORE JACK/LIZ!!!! I love how Jack just nonchalantly puts the "We" in there and gets Liz all nervous. And of course the kissing against the wall is awesome. But in the all awesomeness, I think my absolute favorite bit is:

Maybe Don Henley has a point. Maybe he's a genius.

Except for 'Desperado.'

Hee. I love it!!!

Haha, thanks so much sweetie, I'm glad you liked this one! Total spur-of-the-moment lunch-hour fic, lol. I missed these two like crazy.

And LOL I'm glad you like those last couple lines, because I had a heck of a time finding an ending. That one came last-minute. :D

New one goes up in a few minutes!

*squeals* You've written more! I just checked here yesterday to see if there was something in a fandom I knew but had missed.

Thinking about something as stupid as that song is so, so, so Liz (and for that matter, so realistic). And I love that Jack and Liz depend on each other so much. When one of them is down and out, the other steps in, if not to cheer them up, than to be a kindred spirit. They've shown it many times in the show, and this was pitch perfect^^

Heee! I have, I have! I've written more, finally :D And as a matter of fact, I've written even more than this, which I'll be posting in just a minute! Hehehe.

And what you pointed out about Jack and Liz depending on each other is one of the main things I love about them. How he really can't make decisions without her, and without him she's just kind of a mess in general. I love touching on that in my fics.

Glad you enjoyed this one! Be on the lookout for the next one, going up within minutes! :D

Aww, thanks! I HAD to do a fic about this episode. I'll probably be doing several more, lol, because this was huge for Jack/Liz in my opinion. I'm glad you liked it.

And I LOVE your icon! Ten/Rose!! ♥!

Ha ha!!!! Brilliant! Love the closing sentence! The whole fic is absolutely in character and you are entirely right (totally put 'write' there) about the fact that you have to get back to writing Jack/Liz! :-D And I have noticed there are a few more from you. I'm having a Jack/Liz catch-up evening :-) Can't wait to read the others.

Damn it, why haven't I come across your Jack/Liz stuff sooner?! It's fantastic! I just read five or six pieces, they're all brilliant. Characterization, dialogue, setting - all fabulous. I can't wait to read the rest of your stuff!
