All For Show [The Office; Michael/Jan]
TITLE: All For Show
CHAPTER 7: Almost Seven
FANDOM: The Office
PAIRING: Michael/Jan

Jan hummed to herself as she finished brushing her now-dried hair and put the blow dryer away before she slipped into her short, hooded terrycloth robe -- the one Michael had given her as a birthday gift with the stipulation that she keep it at his place. After knotting the robe, she padded into Michael's bedroom and threw open the closet doors, going straight for one of the drawers in his closet organizer and pulling out her pajamas.

In the corner, she spotted a plaid overnight bag -- her overnight bag, which she had packed on Casino Night -- just one week ago. Jan smiled as she recalled the clever ruse she and Michael had set up that night. She had known about Casino Night all along; Michael had invited her long before the staff had even known about it. And Jan had accepted, though at the time she hadn't been ready to make their relationship known yet. So she requested that he invite another date, so as not to arouse suspicion. And he had chosen to ask his realtor, Carol, to come along. Jan wasn't sure to this day whether or not Carol knew it hadn't been a real date.

Jan slammed her car door, expression cold and detached as she knew the cameras were nearby. She glanced down at the plaid overnight bag currently occupying the passenger seat and grabbed it by the handles, flinging it into the backseat. Then she pulled out and drove off. When she had turned the corner and was certain she was out of sight of the cameras, she grabbed her cell phone and dialed the first number on speed-dial.

"Jello!" came the nonchalant answer.

Jan smirked and rolled her eyes. "It's me."

"I know." His voice sounded as smooth as melted butter, and why oh why the hell did she decide to make a dramatic scene by leaving him? She listened as he stepped away, excusing himself from Carol, and she faintly heard Dwight asking in the background where he was going and was everything alright. Jan sighed quietly to herself. She loved Michael, but hated that Dwight practically came with as an extra appendage. She was actually surprised they had managed to evade Dwight all this time. Then she silently congratulated herself for being such a good actress she fooled even a (volunteer) sheriff's deputy.

"Where are you right now?" Michael asked, quietly, and she still heard the buzz of people somewhere nearby though she couldn't recognize any of the voices.

"I'm heading toward your condo." She arched an eyebrow. "Wanna meet me in bed?"

Jan practically could feel his urgency through the phone line, "Hell yes I do!" before she heard him rushing around (going down a flight of stairs, it sounded like). "I have to get rid of Carol first. And then I'll just tell Dwight... I'll tell Dwight..."

She smirked. "Tell him you've got a naked lady waiting for you at home. He'll never believe you."

"Ouch, Jan. You're going to pay for that."

She giggled and pulled into his driveway. "Hope so," she told him, before they said a hurried goodbye and hung up.

Jan was inside, already changed into the black silk nightie she'd packed, and in bed before she heard Michael's car pull up in the driveway. Fifteen more seconds brought him to the bedroom door, and he was already hopping on one foot trying to pull his shoes off. "Don't start without me!" he exclaimed hurriedly.

Jan laughed at him, sitting back against the headboard, and stretched her arms out to him. "Get over here, Michael."

"Yes m'lady." Michael practically dove onto the bed in his exuberance, still clad in his tux, and wrapped his arms around her waist, kissing her thoroughly. He pulled away when his hands touched her waist -- the satin material probably feeling foreign under his fingertips. He glanced down at her and smiled appreciatively. "Wow. You just look good in any color, Jan. That's amazing."

She smiled and kissed him again. When they pulled away this time, their foreheads met and she cupped his face. "I brought the bag," she murmured, and pecked his lips lightly again.

Michael pulled back with a smile. "The last bag of your stuff?"

"What are you going to do about your place?"

"Well obviously until I put in my notice at work, I'll need to keep it. But then I'll break my lease."

"And when are you--"

"Monday I'm putting in my two weeks. And then I'll start looking for something out here. And then, once my two weeks nears its end, then we can talk about letting the rest of the office know about our relationship."

Michael was practically beaming, and to Jan it was one of the most handsome sights she'd ever seen as he asked softly, "So it's official?"

She giggled. "It's official. I am all moved in."

Michael sighed his contentedness and sprawled across the bed, his arm draped over her comforter-coccooned legs and his head in her lap. Jan ran her fingers through his hair as he quipped, "So I suppose I should cancel that date with Carol for next week."

She whacked his arm, "You'd better!" and kissed him again.

"Don't worry," he murmured against her lips. "You're the only woman I need, Jan."

"Good to hear, Michael." When she pulled back, she arched an eyebrow. "Now strip and get under the covers with me."

"Wow! Yeah, okay."

And he did.

Jan startled out of her reverie when she felt a pair of lips on her neck and arms around her waist. Then she smiled and sunk back against Michael. "You're home early."

"Yeah. Fake dentist appointment."

"Ahh." She spun in his arms and stretched up on tiptoe to properly greet him with her lips. His hands felt over the terrycloth at her hips and she loved that he was always so fascinated with the feel of her robe. Pulling back, she told him, "I wasn't sure what your plans were for tonight, but I was going to get dressed and maybe throw some makeup on if you wanted to go out."

She started to brush past him to head into the bathroom when he gave a tug on her hand, pulling her back. His eyes were focused on the carpet as if he was deep in thought, and Jan wrinkled her brow, suddenly concerned. "Michael?"

"Actually... Jan... there's something I need to talk to you about."

Her stomach dropped, but she remained as composed as she could. "Okay... sure. Should we sit down?" She gestured toward the bed.

Michael glanced in that direction, shoving his hands in his pockets as he shook his head. "Nah, we don't... we don't need to." He looked up at her slowly and Jan, like always when she looked at him, wanted to lose herself in his bottomless, expressive hazel eyes.

"Okay..." Was he dumping her? Was he kicking her out of his condo? What was going on? Michael never looked this solemn. Something had to be wrong.

He took her hand and watched himself rub the back of her hand with his thumb. "I know we've only been together for almost seven months, but... I fell in love with you after three months, Jan. Maybe even after a month. A day. I have no idea, it feels like forever now." He looked up at her.

Not sure of how to respond, Jan just looked at him, waiting patiently for him to go on.

"By the time we got to six months, I was kind of a goner and was not just in love with you, but hopelessly in love with you. Like, wanting to sing that Olivia Newton-John song from 'Grease' kind of hopless devotion. And... since you've moved in and I've gotten to wake up with you every morning, I just..." He chuckled to himself and shook his head, looking down at their joined hands. Softly, he finished, "I just never want this to end."

Jan felt her heart swell. "Michael..."

"I was going to wait until we were at dinner tomorrow for our seven-month anniversary," he sighed, "but I can't wait anymore." It was then he pulled a diamond engagement ring on a platinum band out of his pocket and dropped to one knee.

Jan gasped, and her hand flew up to cover her mouth. Her stomach, whereas it had been at her feet, suddenly jumped into her throat.

"Jan, I don't want to wake up with anybody else, ever. It's gotta be you. It's always been you. So, please... will you marry me?"

And Jan never thought she would've wanted to get married again after the last train wreck, but... looking into Michael's sincere eyes, her reaction was instinctive and knee-jerk. She nodded. "Yes." Tears filled her eyes when he smiled at her and slipped the ring on her finger, standing up to hug her. "Yes." She couldn't stop repeating it. "Yes."

Michael chuckled, and he himself sounded a little tearful. "I heard you the first time, Jan, jeez."

She laughed tearfully and pulled him in for a long kiss. Their foreheads met when they pulled away and she met his eyes as he wiped the tears from her cheeks. "You just... carry the ring around with you?"

"Yeah," he chuckled. "Like, every day. Just in case." His chuckle turned to a full laugh then as he confessed, "I've been trying not to propose to you for like a month now."

Her eyes widened. "You've had the ring for a month."

Michael shrugged nonchalantly, his hands stroking her waist. "Sure."

Jan wasn't entirely sure what to say to that... she wasn't sure anything needed to be said, so... she just kissed him again.

Against her lips, Michael muttered, "How about we do the wedding on our first anniversary? Think that's enough time?"

Jan laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck. "That sounds perfect."

"Happy almost-seven-month anniversary, Jan."

"Happy almost-seven-month anniversary to you, Michael."

"Wanna go to bed now?"

"At six o'clock?"

"Yeah." His eyes glittered with boyish glee, and just a hint of mischief.

Jan was helpless to resist.

Noooooooooo! This can't be finished! *pouts*

This final chapter was adorable and perfect. I really loved the whole concept of this and how the "real time" part was really only a few hours, but you filled in all of the backstory via flashbacks. It was an interesting concept and you pulled it off very well.

So what's next? Love and the Logical? Hmmm? What can we do to keep you in this M/J loving state you've been in?

WOW I am tardy to the party, LOL. I *knew* there was something I should've been doing (other than playing with Photoshop) and this was it! Hehehe.

I'm so glad you liked this! I have such a renewed love for these two now. I am definitely going to set aside some time soon to try to do more of 'Love and the Logical.'

What can you do? Hmmmmmm. Just keep up that enthusiasm for Emjay and that will keep up my inspiration! :D

OH MY GOD! Seriously, this was sooooooo fluffy and flaily and AWESOME BLOSSOM!! I can't even...

I am so glad I decided to wait until today to read this. It got my anticipation all up, and you did not disappoint in any way. This was Jantastic!

And the twist! The fact that her overnight bag was her last bag to finish moving in with him... AMAZING! ajfdkl;ahgalkfjagh! So sweet and perfect and fluffy and... *FLAIL* And she put her notice in at work and is gonna look around Scranton! Oh yes please!

And the little tease about cancelling his date with Carol. So sweet!

And OMG PROPOSAL!! jalf;hagakljfhgaf! And it was so cute, how she was all worried and he was proposing. And I just love that image, of him being in his work suit and her being in her little terrycloth robe he bought her and him just sinking down on his knees and asking her because he cannot wait any longer. Just so perfectly them! And her realization that she did want to marry him and saying yes so many times. *freaking puddle on the floor*.

Honey, you have committed ficular homicide so many times with this fic, I can't even keep count any more. Honestly, this was sooo awesome, and it was made even better by all the fun MSN flailing. I literally cannot wait to see what you come up with next! I LOVE YOU!!

And I'm so excited to be writing M/J again. I missed them so. And while I am flattered that you haven't read any other fic but mine, I've gotta tell you: you've missed several great fics, hehe!

I suggest checking out [Unknown LJ tag]'s fics, as well as girlie_girl_23's. They wrote a few of my faves (oddly, both "Valentine's Day" fics).
