TITLE: All For Show
CHAPTER 5: Blood and Roses
FANDOM: The Office
PAIRING: Michael/Jan
SPOILERS: "Valentine's Day"
RATING: mild R

Jan shut her car door and reached into her pocket as she walked up Michael's driveway, smiling to herself when her hand touched the small metal key in her pocket -- her key. She unlocked the door and set her purse down in its usual place, the entryway table, before going upstairs and heading straight for the bathroom. She started the faucet on the tub and poured in some of her favorite bubble bath -- peony scented -- before stripping down to her birthday suit and sliding into the tub.

She couldn't help but chuckle at the sight that greeted her on the other end of the tub: a single pink rose lying across the porcelain edge, as if Michael anticipated a bubble bath would be her first task upon arriving at the condo. "Oh, Michael," she sighed with affection, reaching for the rose and giving it a healthy sniff before sinking back against the tub again.

Since Valentine's Day, he'd been constantly leaving her pink roses -- something she never in a million years thought that she would enjoy. She had never been big on Valentine's Day. All of that changed when Michael came along, though.

On Michael's cue, Jan turned to look at the cameras that were poised behind the glass office doors, and she exhaled a dread-filled, "Oh," and turned back to a shocked Michael as the doors slid shut. She glared at the cameramen until they ran off, looking utterly terrified, before she allowed herself to smile. So her acting skills weren't declining. That was good. She had felt ever since Christmas that she might be getting closer and closer to breaking -- to slipping up and exposing her relationship with Michael.

Jan schooled her features and walked briskly back to her office, needing to be her corporate self for just one more half hour. When that half hour was up and she was clocked out for the day, she immediately pulled out her cell phone and dialed Michael. "Where are you?"

"In New York still. I have got some big plans for us tonight."

"Michael, really, you don't have to. Valentine's Day isn't really a huge deal for m--"

"Nope, Jan, I am not letting you excuse yourself from this wonderful, joyous, red-and-pink holiday. We're going to dinner. Maybe some other fun stuff too. But you should go home and change because you really look too corporate for a night on the town."

She grinned. "Alright, Michael. I'll call you back when I've changed." She'd never moved faster to get home in her entire life.

When she arrived at her house and opened the door, she was greeted by the sight of red and pink rose petals strewn all over the floor of her entryway. Haphazardly scattered, though, as if maybe an angry little flower girl had just thrown clumps here and there. Jan laughed softly to herself; only one person could be behind this -- "Michael?"

It had to be. That was confirmed when, on her entryway table, she saw the small gold key she'd given him just after New Year's (he'd given her his as well). It had a small white piece of tape on each side, on which Michael had drawn a heart with red Sharpie. He had explained his reasoning behind that as being the fact that her giving him a key to her home was like giving him a key to her heart. Which had been so adorably, unfailingly Michael of him.

Coming back to the present, Jan noticed the trail of petals leading up the stairs. The clean freak in her wondered how the hell she was even going to begin cleaning this up, but she shoved those thoughts aside. She shucked her coat and followed the trail up the stairs, down the hallway, all the way to her closed bedroom door. And though it was her own bedroom door, she knocked and called out a tentative, "Michael?"

"Come in!" came Michael's muffled reply, so Jan, smiling widely now, opened the door, butterflies going wild in her stomach at the prospect of what she'd find.

And when the door swung open, there was Michael, decked out in a full tuxedo holding a small teddy bear in one hand, a box of chocolates in the other, with a long-stemmed pink rose between his teeth. He grinned around the rose and mumbled, "Happy Valentine's Day, Jan."

Jan laughed through her surprise. "Michael! What is all this?"

He raised his eyebrows and looked around the room, shrugging his shoulders as he replied (still around the rose in his teeth), "A buncha Valentine's junk?"

She grinned. "You did all this for me?" She took the chocolates from him and set it on her tall dresser, then took the teddy bear from his other hand and smiled at it, touching the red velvet bow around its neck before she set it on the foot of her bed.

"Of course!" he exclaimed, as if she had been in disbelief. As he did this, however, he accidentally bit down on one of the thorns on the rose (which he'd forgotten to cut off -- oh, Michael) and immediately yelled out in pain, "HOLY MOTHER OF--" He noticed her watching and finished lamely, "Valentine's Day. That... hurt. That really, effing hurt."

He bent to pick up the rose, that had fallen onto the carpet in all the commotion, and he looked embarrassed as he bent to pick it up -- but Jan was more concerned with his lip, and the fact that his lower lip was now bleeding. "Michael, here... let's get you cleaned up."

She took his arm and led him into her bathroom, pushing on his shoulders to make him sit on the toilet lid. After digging a washcloth out of her linen closet and wetting it down, she wiped off his lip lightly, and then pressed the cloth tight against it to stop the bleeding. She knelt down in front of him and laid a hand gently on his knee, her eyes on the washcloth over his lip as she shook her head slowly side to side. "I can't believe you did all this for me."

Michael smiled down at her adoringly. "Of course I did, Jan. It's Valentine's Day -- the day I get to show the woman I love just how much I love her."

Jan froze, pulling the washcloth away from his now-dry lip, and slowly met his eyes. "What?"

Michael froze, too, his green eyes wide as if he were a deer caught in the headlights. Then, he closed his eyes self-deprecatingly and dropped his chin, shaking his head, grumbling to himself, "Okay, shut... it, Michael." His eyes were apologetic now as he looked up at her. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to let that slip. I just... I was just saying that Valentine's Day is just, y'know, mmpf--"

Jan kissed him, hard, before he could say anything else, her adrenaline suddenly on high and butterflies once again flying rampant in her stomach. Michael whimpered in pain only for a split-second against her lips before he kissed her back, just as hard. His hands went to her hips and hers traveled to his face, diving into his hair. Before long, Michael hauled her up onto his lap so she was sitting astride him, pressed tight against him as they kissed heatedly.

When they broke away from the kiss to catch their breath, one look into each other's eyes told them both where this was going. So Jan reluctantly climbed off of Michael and stood up... took his hand and led him out of the bathroom, never breaking gaze. They fell into another kiss just oustide the bathroom door and Jan sunk against the wall, pulling Michael against her. His hands slid across her stomach and her muscles jumped in response, as did her heart when he popped open the single button on her fitted blazer.

Michael pulled away again and met her eyes, his own asking permission that Jan was all too willing to grant. So she nodded; pulled him with her into the bedroom. They'd waited long enough. They both had restrained themselves long enough. It had been three months already, for crying out loud.

Michael slid her blazer off her shoulders with a smile and tossed it in the direction of her vanity table. Then he reached for the tiny buttons on her blue shirt. Ice blue. She'd chosen to wear a blue shirt, blue eyeshadow today to keep up pretenses. Jan was nothing if not the mistress of pretense. Michael had hoped she would wear red, told her he thought she'd look stunning in red, but she told him no. She was not going to wear red. The ice queen had no time for pinks and reds and other Valentine colors. She was a hard-shelled business woman, after all. On the outside, anyway. On the inside...

"Oh, wow."

Jan smiled. On the inside she didn't mind red -- she thought she looked good in it too. Which was why she wore her red lace bra and matching boy-cut panties to surprise Michael. And surprised he was. He stared at her for what felt like hours, and Jan wasn't sure if it was her breasts or the bra, until he lifted his eyes to hers and said simply, "Told you you'd look good in red."

Jan couldn't help but laugh and kiss him again, undoing his bowtie and shoving his tux jacket off his shoulders. They undressed each other slowly the rest of the way, taking breaks for long, deep, hungry kisses and staring into each other's eyes. Before she knew it, they were tangled together in her bed, and Michael was breaking away from another kiss to look toward the foot of the bed.

Jan lifted her head off the pillow and followed his gaze. "What?"

It was then she saw him gently nudging the teddy bear he'd given her off the bed, turning back to her with a wry grin plucking up one corner of his gorgeous lips. "I don't want him watching us."

Jan's head pressed back into the pillows as she laughed; but then, Michael's lips went to her neck, his hands slid over her body, and there was no more time for laughter. When he slid gently inside her, they both gasped, eyes catching. Michael looked almost shocked, and Jan had an inkling she looked the same way. Obviously neither of them were prepared for the bolt of electricity that was going to hit as soon as their bodies joined.

Michael alternated between holding her close and murmuring wonderful things into her ear, and pulling back to stare into her eyes. Jan had never experienced anything so intense. Sex was usually a chore. Or it was in the case of her marriage, anyway. Which always disappointed her. She used to enjoy sex, and was waiting for the moment she would get to enjoy it again. Apparently that moment was now. She was enjoying the hell out of it.

She knew Michael had a few tricks up his sleeve. Her college girlfriends had always told her it was the quiet ones, the ones you'd least suspect, that were the best in the sack. Jan hadn't really believed it until now. Michael knew just the right spot to kiss or touch at just the right time, and the way his body fit into hers made her head spin. Soon she was desperately gasping his name, her nails digging into his back... and then suddenly, abruptly... she was flying.

Michael was quick to follow and soon they collapsed together against her mattress. Their chests battled each other for oxygen, and they kissed softly. "Happy Valentine's Day," Michael breathed, smiling against her lips. "That was just... awesome."

Jan laughed and kissed back. "Yes, it was. Happy Valentine's Day."

Michael moved off of her and they got under the covers together. He immediately pulled her into his arms and banded them around her, linking his fingers and leaning his lips on her head. "I really did want to take you out on the town, y'know," he murmured.

She leaned up and kissed his chin. "I know. There's always tomorrow."

"Very true."

The two of them fell into a comfortable, companionable silence, and Jan felt her eyelids growing heavy. "I'm about to fall asleep on you," she warned.

"You go right ahead. We can always have some more sex later."

She laughed. "Sounds like a plan." Maybe Valentine's Day wasn't so bad.

Jan closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest, slurring sleepily, "Oh, I forgot to tell you... I love you too."

She felt Michael smiling against the top of her head just before she drifted off.

*DEAD* Seriously... puddle on the floor.

Just... honestly, every time I think there is no way this fic can get better... it does! And I even knew about this chapter! And still, it was just, completely awesome!

Oh god, where to even start with the love of this chapter? First of all, the rose on the bathtub, and that he knew that would be her first stop... Oh Michael!

And his key having the heart drawn on it. Tooo sweet and so unfailably Michael!

Loved the description of the rose petals as being thrown about by an angry flower girl. There was just something so cute about that imagery!

I can literally see him standing there in her bedroom, with the chocolates and bear and rose... and it's a beautiful picture in my head. And then the thorn... LOL! Oh Michael!

HE TOLD HER HE LOVED HER! A;FDLJA;GLHALKFA;GHAFLKAJ! And again, it was just so perfectly Michael! And then he was all embarrassed and sad and trying to take it back and Jan just attacks him! lfjaf;hgj!

LOVED THE SEXINGS! Because it was sweet and romantic yet hot and sexy! And how she had the red underwear on underneath all her blue. ajdfaj;gaj! And that she was finally enjoying sex again. And he didn't want the bear to watch! Oh Michael!

And then her falling asleep on him again! AND SAYING I LOVE YOU BACK! jalkfd;aghajf;kaghafj!

AHAHAHAHAHA. Oh, I love you. You are too awesome. I'm so excited you liked this (even though I already leaked this chapter's spoilers to you, LOL). The whole idea around this chapter was literally, completely centered around the image I got in my mind one day of Michael holding a bear in one hand, chocolates in the other, with a rose between his lips. GAH. It was just too pretty to resist.

EMJAY SEXINGS FTMFW. That was fun to write the Emjay sexings again. Wheeeeee.

HEE! As long as you continue to be a willing victim, I shall commit ficular homicide ;D

♥ ♥ ♥

Oh, P.S. I just posted the next chapter. *snerk*

Hee! Thank you so much! This was such a fun chapter to write -- the whole idea was centered around the image of Michael/the bear/the chocolates/the rose. Because I'm sure Michael is romatic as heck on Valentine's Day :D

Glad you liked the bathroom lip-cleaning scene, too. Hahaha. I just can't resist writing those little Jan-attacks.

The next chapter is up & ready for your viewing! ;D

Thanks again!
