Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 19: Curiouser and Curiouser
FANDOM: 30 Rock
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"

When Liz opened her eyes again, she was no longer staring at the ceiling in the living room. She was staring at the canopy in her bedroom. She frowned up at it, tilted her head at it, and kind of wished she could ask it how she got there. Rubbing her eyes, she slowly sat up and looked around. Her lights had been dimmed and her jacket shucked. Her suitcase had been neatly stored on the bench of her antique vanity table, and her carry-on was tucked in the corner of her room near the door.

Liz's fingers went immediately to her wedding ring, twisting it on her finger as she called out for her husband. "Jack?" She looked over at the clock and noted it was past midnight. Surely he wouldn't have gone out. "Jack?"

Soon, she heard his footsteps rushing toward her bedroom. He opened the door with wide, expectant eyes. "Lemon, what is it? I am right in the middle of hour four of a six-hour marathon of 'Meerkat Manor.' Have you ever seen it?" He was as giddy as a little boy on Christmas morning. "Lemon, it's like a soap opera... with meerkats!" He laughed. "It's delightful! Want to come and watch? I've got it on TiVo!"

She smiled uneasily. "No, thank you." She nodded toward her suitcase. "I think maybe I'll unpack."

"Lemon, just come out and watch it with me. You'll love it."

So Liz, against her better judgment, allowed Jack to pull her out of bed by the hand and lead her into the livingroom, where she plopped unceremoniously onto the couch. When she caught sight of the bowl of popcorn on the coffee table, her brows raised in appreciation. Jack, obviously noting her stare (or reading her mind again, she wasn't sure which), told her, "Help yourself."

She did. She grabbed the bowl, in fact, and positioned it in her lap as she sat Indian-style on the couch, feet tucked under her. Jack sat beside her and returned his attention to the TiVo (the eighth wonder of the world, in his words -- either that or YouTube, he'd never made an actual decision on that), clicking it back on and leaning back to enjoy his meerkat show.

Liz had to admit to herself that the show was kind of amusing... but not as amusing as watching Jack watch the show. He smiled the whole way through, a rather boyish smile (that was unfortunately too cute for Liz to be okay with it). At times, he barked a laugh, or talked to the meerkats as if they were in the room. "Oh Apollo, you little scoundrel, stealing Flower's food!"

Liz really did her best not to laugh at him, but... he was just so damned funny. And she had to wonder how exactly a grown man (middle-aged, in fact, despite his best efforts) could find such joy in a nature show. On Animal Planet. It was a struggle for her brain to compute.

He kept reaching over her for the popcorn, as well, grumbling each time he had to do so. "Come on, Lemon, share the wealth," he finally said as he took the bowl from her and deposited it in his own lap.

Liz frowned and shyly reached over to get more, then hesitated and drew her hand back. Without tearing his eyes from the television, Jack draped an arm over her shoulders and drew her close, putting her within easy reach of the bowl. She shifted and tucked her legs up beside her. It was okay to let herself lean against him, for the sake of getting popcorn, she figured.

When she laid her head on his chest, she rationalized that it was silly to let her neck get a strain from trying to hold it up. And when she fell asleep on Jack, she was about eighty-five percent sure it was because of the jet lag.

After what felt like hours, Liz stirred, feeling her body moving without her conscious consent. Her stomach flipped when she was suddenly airborne, and she thought for a second she was dreaming until she felt an arm under her knees and her back. Her head automatically fell to the right, finding a hard shoulder while her arms looped around the neck. She felt them moving again, felt herself being tipped forward, and then she was on something soft, the unmistakable scent of her room, of her sheets, surrounding her. And then she heard him. Jack. "There. Sweet dreams, Lemon."

Rolling onto her side and just barely opening her eyes a slit, she rubbed the back of her hand over her forehead and complained sleepily, "Where are you going?"

"To my room. I'm going to bed too."

She shook her head, lips slipping into a pout. "No."

"What did I tell you about trying to be cute?"

She reached out blindly, eyes closed again, and caught his hand. She gave one swift tug and pulled him into the bed with her, rolling onto her side and curling his arm around her. "You're staying here," she grumbled in her sleep.

Liz heard him chuckle. "I am?"

"Yes. You're warm, and it's chilly in here."

"That's what you're telling yourself, then?"

"Mm-hmm." She nodded, nestling into her pillow.

She felt him relaxing behind her, against her, and his palm slid across her stomach, resting over it with fingers spread. She could freak out about this in the morning.

He really was warm, after all.

Sometime in the middle of the night, Liz awoke to arms around her and a warm body pressed against her back. Someone was breathing on her neck and for a moment she was alarmed it might be a burglar, but then rationality kicked in and she figured there weren't many cuddly burglars out there. So she wriggled out of the embrace, confident it wouldn't be a burglar, and sat up to find Jack beside her, sleeping soundly.

Liz flew off the bed then, almost wishing it was a burglar because chances are she'd be less freaked-out right now. She kinda felt like Alice in Wonderland... and was almost inclined to say, "Curiouser and curiouser." If Jenna was there, though, she'd be quick to remind Liz that Alice was blonde, and that she should use some analogy from Snow White, or... maybe Beauty and the Beast. Jenna rather enjoyed that blondes had a monopoly on the Disney heroines.

Liz slipped out of the room and went straight for the balcony, needing some fresh air to clear her head. If she was able to clear it, maybe she had a chance of figuring out why the hell Jack was in her bed. Spooning her. Because that was weird. Wasn't it? A little?

She took a seat on the glider and started to rock back and forth, looking out at the lights below and beyond. Everything seemed so calm from up in Jack's (their) penthouse. Liz rubbed her hands over her arms and almost wished she'd grabbed a sweater, knowing she was too lazy to go in and retrieve one.

What was Jack doing in her bed? She fought hard to remember. She'd fallen asleep on him during that meerkat show, and maybe vaguely remembered him carrying her into her room, but then... how did he end up in her bed?

Though Jack's voice was soft, it still startled her, and she spun to look at him over her shoulder. "Jack, hi."

"When I woke up, you weren't there." Wordlessly, he draped a throw blanket over her and stood next to the glider where she sat.

"Yeah sorry, I just uh... needed some air."

Jack nodded. "You asked me to stay," he informed her conversationally. He tilted his head and amended, "Actually, you demanded that I stay."

"Oh." Why the hell would she do that? It seemed so unlike her.

"I don't know why," Jack went on, freaking her out just a little bit because it seemed like he was right in her head. He ducked his head, voice low. "I'm sorry if that made you uncomfortable when you woke up."

Liz opened her mouth to reply, to try to explain exactly how it felt when she woke up. Because she wasn't uncomfortable, really. He was warm, and the way he fit against her wasn't awkward in any way, but... it freaked her out at the same time.

She realized she hadn't managed to say anything when Jack patted her shoulder and smiled fleetingly. "Hang in there, Lemon. This'll all be over soon. Goodnight."

Liz turned over her shoulder and tried to decipher whether or not he sounded sad about that as she watched him go back to bed... in his own room. After a few more minutes, Liz followed, adjourning to her room and stretching out in her bed -- alone -- and she slept fitfully for the rest of the night, Jack's words flowing through her head on a loop.

This'll all be over soon.

okay, so I just read all nineteen chapters of this (all at once, too), and it's so adorable and I love it and there were lots of things i wanted to say... but I've forgotten most of it because, no kidding? Yesterday I was writing a jack/liz fic where Meerkat Manor is heavily mentioned! ("Just because you enjoy watching Meerkat Manor doesn't mean we should do a whole show where real live meerkats do all the sketches!" "What if you had that kid with the funny hair give them voices like those mice in cinderelle?" "no, Jack. just no." an actual quote from the fic XD great minds think alike?)

Seriously though, I do love this fic, it's so incredibly cute, it makes me happy :) I was a little dubious about the premise at first, although i think if we're honest with ourselves, everyone who ships jack/Liz wished he would have at lease *asked* her. But reading it totally proved me wrong. Mucho kudos for pulling it off. and for getting Jack and Liz to actually make out a couple chapters back - surpirisingly hard to get them past banter, I've found...

Yesss! Great minds definitely DO think alike, hahaha. Props for the Meerkat Manor mention in your own :D

I'm glad you like this fic, because honestly, premise-wise? I wasn't sure it would go over well. I wasn't sure if I could make it even *remotely* plausible (because when I started writing it, I was in the obsessed-fangirl phase of my shipping, where any moment I saw, I just wanted them to be married). Glad you thought I pulled it off. It always means a lot!

(And you're right -- it's extremely hard to get them past the banter, haha! You just gotta make 'em kiss. And then they like it, hahaha)

Awww! Oh my gosh, I am squeeing all over the place. A long time ago, back when I first got into 30 Rock, one of the things that drew me most to Jack/Liz was the fact that although on the surface they're so different from one another, when you really get down to the bottom of things, they are the exact same kind of dorky. And something just clicks. And with them being all snuggly and the popcorn and the meerkats and Jack being ridiculously excited -- this chapter just, like, shone with that. Not to mention, y'know, SPOONING.

Oh, fic, how I adore thee. :D

Hehehehe! Thanks so much, babe, as usual! You are so right about the Jack/Liz clicking, btw. I always thought they had neat chemistry, but by the time Jack pulled Liz onto her chair to show her the panda video, I was convinced they were totally dorky soulmates :D

And my mom enjoys Meerkat Manor every once in awhile, and I thought it would be such a Jack thing to love. JAAAACCCKKKK. *pounces on him* Seriously, I need to stop writing Jack/Liz for awhile, else I will fall hopelessly in love wit him. *giggle*

Also? JACK/LIZ SPOONING FTW. Heee! More soon!

Yay for the meerkats.
This chapter was so many levels of awesome I can't even count them.
With the Liz asking Jack to stay, to the TiVo (which is without a doubt the eighth wonder of the world), and the spooning!

*giggle* Thank you muchly, dear, as usual!! Glad you liked the meerkat stuff; couldn't resist ;D

As far as the eighth wonder of the world goes... I'm torn between TiVo, and iTunes. I can't choose!!! They're both miraculous in their own ways :D

More VERY soon! I've finished writing the entire fic... it's all about posting now ;D

This one left me sad, but in a good way. You have such skill at creating little Jack/Liz moments that, while not overtly romantic, are really touching in the context of their characters.
Also, Liz would totally be Belle, since Jack is sort of a mix of Gaston and the Beast, for various reasons. Jenna is so insightful, lol.
And Lemon's jetlag leading to spooning was totally believable, because it can leave you feeling drunk sometimes.
"This'll all be over soon."> Both for what Jack reffers to, and in reference to this fic, I have a have a love/hate relationship with this sentence.
a.: MB; i'm just built this way;regalish on July 2nd, 2007 11:29 pm (UTC)
Awww, thank you so much! I was hoping that jetlag -> spooning thing would be believable. She's Liz. I figure I could always chalk it up to her denial :D Liz + Denial = OTP. *giggle*

And you're right! Jack is totally the Beast & Gaston! Awwww.

More soon! I've finished writing the entire fic, and was able to bring it to a close at 24 chapters. So, five left!

They have build a strong relationship in which the two of them are completely comfortable and happy but reality is something you can never avoid.

Yay!! that was deep and sad , especially because this is going to end soon (the marriage and the fic).

I fond to this fic because it was soooo fun , adorable and stress relieving to read it that I going to start crying? (PMS for sure).

In my personal opinion all the characters developed and performed in a believable way and that is exactly how they will behave in the series.I'm wondering how this is going to end. Good Luck!!! (sorry for all the grammar mistakes ^__^)

Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it! This story has been such a blast for me to write, and if I could, I'd totally make it go on forever, hehehe.

Alas, it must come to an end. But hey, there are still five chapters left! Chapter 20 will go up soon :D

Thanks again!

Oh, another extremely wonderful chapter! I just love those little moments that you give them that are so incredibly sweet and so very in character, like the Meerkat thing. They just click on so many levels. And the part where she asked him to stay with her! God, I loved that!!! Especially the line where Jack said, "That's what you're telling yourself, then?" He so knows that she's in love with him. He's quite a few steps ahead of her, and I think his constantly mentioning that it will be over is just part of his plan in keeping her! He's a sly little devil. Another line that I adored: "When I woke up, you weren't there." Such a simple statement, and I could hear Jack saying that so perfectly in my head. *squeeeeeeeee!!!!!* I loved that line. Gah, I am so in love with this fic! I am going to be so sad when it's all over, but I'm dying to know how it will end. I absolutely love your writing!

Hehehe, thanks so much as usual, doll! It always means so much :D

I couldn't resist the Meerkat thing. Jack's such an adorable little man-boy when it comes to cute animal stuff. And I definitely can't resist that Liz denial -- Jack's so on to her ;) I always saw him as pretty sly and slick, and always a few steps ahead.

Glad you're still enjoying this! I am pleased to report I've finished writing the entire fic; there are five chapters left for me to post! I'm excited, but at the same time I kinda wish I could write tons more. Because man, these two are amazingly fun to write.

Thanks again!

No! I don't want this to be over soon :-( *throws tantrum*

*calms down* Okay - we can blame that on me being tired. I love this! Jack is so absolutely in character, I could totally picture him watching Meerkat Manor, grinning and talking to the meerkats. Hee!

Also love that Liz freaked out when she woke up. Awww. She's so completely in love with him, and just can't accept it. Hee!

Another wonderful chapter, Caroline. These updates never disappoint and always make me smile :-)

As for my icon, that is my favourite episode of the XF too :-D

Awwwww, Jac! Hehehe. *gives you candy to ward off the tantrum*

Glad you liked this chapter! I was helpless to resist throwing in the Meerkat stuff. I love Jack and his cute adoration of animal videos :D

And writing stubborn, in-denial Liz is always enjoyable. Liz + Denial = OTP. Forever and ever. Hehehe.

Also? OMG BAD BLOOD. I love that it seems to be everyone's fave ep of XF. SO hilarious, and SO good. I still have Scully's bagel rant completely memorized :D ...I'll spare you, but I totally could type it below.

Woahmygosh, I haven't reviewed in forever! So sorry. =[ I've been really busy lately, as today's the day before I go on my trip to Europe!! 20 days long! -excited-

I loved this chapter. I love Meerkat Manor although I fell out a little bit this year. It's really understandable how Liz had the air of drunkenness because, being a fantastic world traveler (hehe), I know how jet lag feels. xD

Jack's excitement over MM was so adorkable. ^^

Jack!excited + Liz!denial = OTP.
a.: KW; take a trip and multiply;regalish on July 3rd, 2007 12:57 am (UTC)
Ooooh, Europe! Funtimes! That should be so cool; I've always wanted to go. My best friend's a fantastic world traveler, too :D

Glad you liked this chapter! And MM totally seemed like something Jack would just love, hehehe. I can't get over how cute he was, excited about that panda video. I gotta figure out which ep that was, because man. ♥Jack!!♥

Chapter 20's going up tonight, and if you don't have net access over there, the rest of the fic will be waiting for you when you return!! Good luck, have fun, and be safe! :)

"Oh Apollo, you little scoundrel, stealing Flower's food!"

I have never heard of Meerkat Manor, but now I kind of want to watch it. And it does sound like something Jack would enjoy. Hee.

The ending kind of bummed me out, because Jack is sad about it, isn't he? I mean, I know it'll work out and Liz will admit to him that she's in love with him (she has to!) but oh, Jack.

Love, love, love this.
a.: TF; i'm just your average jane;regalish on July 3rd, 2007 01:01 am (UTC)
Heee! I'm not a huge fan of Meerkat Manor personally (don't really see the appeal, heh), but my mom thinks it's adorable. I saw a few minutes and decided immediately that Jack would absolutely have every episode of it TiVo'ed :D

Jack is sad about it; you are correct. Because *soppy voice* he WUVS her! Hehehe.

Maybe I'm perceiving him incorrectly, but beneath the right-wing corporate alpha-male'ness he exudes, I've always seen Jack as being secretly soft-hearted and (kind of) a romantic. *shrug*

Chapter 20 goes up tonight!! :D I'm way too excited about having this thing finished finally, hahaha. 24 chapters!! I'm thrilled I was able to keep it going so long without losing inspiration (like I normally do), lol!
