Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 18: Only Pretending
FANDOM: 30 Rock
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"

Talking with Jenna hadn't helped. At all. As soon as she spilled her dirty little secret, that she missed Jack, Jenna would not stop hounding her about being in love with him. And Liz wasn't in love with him. She tried telling Jenna exactly that, but she didn't believe her. Especially when she heard that they kinda made out in the honeymoon suite before he left for Paris.

After she heard that little tidbit of information, she was more convinced than ever that Liz was deeply in love with Jack and that she wanted to make little Jack-and-Liz babies with him. She was going to hit Jenna so hard when she got home. So. Hard.

She was not in love with Jack. Not at all. Sure, he was handsome in the conventional sense, but he knew that he was handsome. So he was kinda pompous about it. He used his handsomeness as a weapon against poor unsuspecting women. And yes, he was successful, but that never mattered to her. Liz had always been self-sufficient; she didn't need a man to take care of her financially. She liked to stand on her own.

Granted, Jack hadn't really been throwing money at her. No, instead he'd been showering her with gifts. And compliments, oddly enough. And Liz was about seventy-eight percent sure he never did any of that kind of stuff with Bianca. The way he talked about her made it seem like as soon as the wedding reception was over, the fighting started. Their relationship always seemed to be more lust-fueled hatred than anything sweet.

Jack was sweet with her. He'd told her several times over the preceding weeks that he would always respect her (something she was positive he didn't really do with Bianca), and that he would always want what was best for her for as long as they "happened to be tied to each other," in his words.

So if anything, Jack was pretty much in love with her. After all, he was the one that continually kept leaning in for a kiss before the interruptions would break them apart. He was the one that picked out the wedding dress (and nightgown, and swimsuit) that fit her perfectly. He was so completely in love with her.

But she was not in love with him. Nope. No way.

She kept telling herself that for the entire plane trip back to New York.

When she got off the plane and was waiting for her luggage down at baggage claim, her blackberry started playing "New York, New York." Smirking, she reached into her purse and picked it up. "Hi, Jack."

"Liz, darling, how was your flight?"

She rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile. There was another thing to add to her list of evidence that Jack was madly in love with her -- he was throwing around 'darling' like nobody's business. She grabbed her suitcase off the carousel and started wheeling it behind her, up the escalator. "It was fine, thank you. I just got done at baggage claim."

"Wonderful. All you'll need to do is head upstairs and the car will be waiting for you."

Emerging from the sliding doors of the airport, Liz looked around, keeping the blackberry pressed to her ear. "What kind of car am I looking for?"

"I ordered a black limousine."

Easy to spot, she headed for the black limousine down the row of cars, rolling her eyes again. "Did you really have to get a limousine to pick me up from the airport?" She strode purposefully toward the back door as it swung open. "I mean, really, Jack--"

When Jack -- in the flesh -- stepped out of the limousine, smirking at her with his own blackberry pressed to his ear, her heart jumped straight up into her throat. Okay, maybe she was smitten with him a little bit. "Jack," she breathed, turning off her blackberry.

Smiling a mile wide and looking genuinely thrilled to see her (what was the matter with him?), Jack swept her up in his arms for a hug, kissing her cheek soundly. "Welcome home."

Liz tried not to pay attention to how the word 'home' made her heart hammer in her chest. Maybe it was just cardiac arrhythmia. Oh, she hoped.

She smiled tentatively at him. "Nice to be back. What are you doing here? What happened to Paris?" She hated that she was kinda thrilled to see him, too.

He waved dismissively. "Oh, Paris is such a bore sometimes. Honestly, I don't know why I go there so much. I came home lastnight." Then that huge smile overtook his face again (it was a little bit handsome and a little bit terrifying -- Liz wasn't sure what to make of it), and he grasped both her hands and stepped away from her, eyeing her at arm's length. "Look at you!"

Liz exhaled her smile -- it was that same look on his face when he saw her in that red dress. It was kinda nice. And only slightly cute.

"So tan! So beautiful!" he gushed excitedly. "You're like a completely different person!"

The smile disappeared from her face.

Jack immediately looked remorseful. "I'm sorry, Lemon, I didn't mean it like that. I meant, you just--"

Liz couldn't help it. She leaned in and kissed him (kinda quickly, so as not to make him think she was in love with him or anything) and told him, "It's okay."

He was smiling again, and he squeezed her hands before he released her, gesturing toward the open limo door as the driver came around to get her bags. "You first."

On the ride back to the penthouse, they each pulled out their digital cameras and took turns showing each other photos they'd taken. Jack took extra time on each picture to explain to her where each landmark was located in Paris and the significance of the landmark (even though Liz kinda remembered most of that stuff from high school and college classes).

When the limo pulled up to the curb of the penthouse, exhaustion and jet lag had begun to catch up with Liz. She had to fight to drag herself out of the car, and was glad Jack had gotten out first and was holding a hand out to help her. Otherwise she would've been totally okay with collapsing on the sidewalk.

The driver got her bags for her and Jack wheeled them onto the elevator, while Liz sunk against the back wall, closing her eyes. "I think I could sleep forever," she complained.

She felt Jack smiling at her without looking over at him. "Well you've still got the rest of the week off; you'll have plenty of time."

"What about you?"

The elevator dinged and opened straight into the penthouse. When she heard Jack wheeling her suitcase off, she opened her eyes and sluggishly followed him.

"I'm returning to work tomorrow, Liz. I'm getting restless. I'm not used to such long vacations."

Liz was only half-listening as she made a beeline for the soft suede couch in the living room and fell back on it gracelessly. "Yeah?" she answered absently.

"Yes." She felt the cushions dip as Jack sat down on the far end and pulled her feet into his lap, removing her shoes. "Besides," he added, massaging her feet, "I think it will impress Geiss that I've come back early, and perhaps persuade him to turn the microwave division back over to me sooner."

"Right, the microwaves," she slurred sleepily. It was really hard to concentrate with him rubbing her feet like that. The word microwaves rang a bell, though.

Oh, that's right. As Liz was slowly drifting off, she remembered they were only pretending to be happily married.

She'd almost forgotten.

If I flunk out of AP Lit on the first day of school, I'm blaming you. Seriously. I should totally be doing my summer reading, but instead I just HAD to check my LJ and you just HAD to have a brand new amazingly awesome chapter that I HAD to read because your story is about 17 levels of awesome.
Although, I must say, the J/L interaction in this chapter was totally worth the 15 minute break from "The Handmaid's Tale"
She SO loves him.

HA! Well, I don't want to be responsible for anybody failing anything, hehehe, BUT I'm glad I could give you a little break from some hellacious summer reading :D

Thanks much, as usual, for reviewing! You're made of awesome.

Another absolutely wonderful chapter! My heart melted when Jack popped out of the limo and surprised Liz, so sweet. And he was so happy to see her!!! God, I am so in love with your Jack. And that foot massaging, such a sweet, husband-and-wifey moment. Loved it! Cannot wait for the next chapter!

Heee, thanks so much! As usual, you never fail to bring a smile to my face with your kind reviews! :D

I couldn't NOT have Jack surprise Liz, hehehe. I felt bad about teasing you guys with him not being in Hawaii. And I'm glad you like my version of Jack -- his excitement to see Liz I actually pretty much stole from a character he played on "Friends" -- he was this overly-happy, zest-for-life guy named Parker, and OMG it's just about the cutest thing and makes me love Alec Baldwin even more.

More soon! Just a few more chapters before it wraps up :)

Jack-and-Liz babies!!! Hehehe! Oh, Jenna. Imagine how she would click with Kelly Kapoor. It's a beautiful thought.

"So tan! So beautiful!" he gushed excitedly. "You're like a completely different person!"

The smile disappeared from her face.

HEE. Oh, for all his charm and sweetness and Liz Lemon lovin', he's still the same old Jack Donaghy. And that's why we love him.

Cannot wait to see more, mademoiselle! (Damn the French.)

*giggle* It IS a rather fun thought, isn't it? Jenna & Kelly, gushing about Suri and Shiloh.

Glad you love the Donaghy-ness. I totally stole the whole excitement thing from a part he played on Friends, because OMGCUUUUTE. I wonder if that's on YouTube. Or maybe you've seen it.

I'm really becoming unnaturally smitten with Alec Baldwin. It needs to stop. Like now. Haha!

More soon! (Just a few more chapters until it's all over! *sigh of relief*)

Yay yay yay! He was in the limo :-D

And she is so totally in love with him. Mwahaha! It's fun to 'watch' her try to deny it :-)

Caroline I still adore this fic! I adore your writing of Jack & Liz. Don't switch fandoms! :-)

*squees with you* Jack and Liiiizzzzz! :D

hee! I so got punked by the limo scene. He says Paris was boring, but you KNOW he was just excited to be in the same city as her again.
Also, a Jack foot-rub? *fans self* He should definitely not be returning to work early. He should be in the master bedroom getting a head start on all of those Jack-and-Liz babies!
I love the Jenna/Liz girl talk. They seem such an odd couple, but I totally have friends that are polar opposites and can see right through me.

HEEE. I SO got you with that limo thing! *giggles*

I couldn't help it. I got all fangirly and wanted him to be there, so bam! Hah. One of the good parts of being the author, lol.

I so know what you mean about the polar opposite friends, too. I've got a few of those, where you wonder how you ever became friends, and yet you're perfect complements to each other. I love it. Which is why I love Jenna & Liz's BFF'ness oh-so-much :D

Thanks again! Chapter nineteen goes up very VERY soon.

Hahaha! Truthfully? I thought up that little tiny bit of dialogue long before I started the chapter, LOL. I kept it in my head for WEEKS, just waiting to use it.

Ha, I'm such a dork. xD

Thanks much, babe, as usual! Glad you liked it!
