Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 15: The Threshold
FANDOM: 30 Rock
PAIRING: Jack/Liz
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"
RATING: PG
SUMMARY:

*****

It didn't mean anything. It really didn't. That was what Liz told herself when Jack kissed her for the second time, while dipping her during a dance. Of course it didn't mean anything; it was all part of the show. If it meant something, it would've been a longer kiss... not just a (fairly) quick, joyous peck on the lips.

He did get a lot more affectionate as the night wore on, though, which had been slightly disconcerting. She had to studiously avoid Jenna just to escape interrogation (no, she still didn't know what the hell was going on, and how many more times did she have to say that?). She had to avoid Pete, too, for that matter. She remembered looking up after the dance-floor kiss and seeing him with a wrinkled forehead, giving a facial shrug, half-smiling. So at least someone was enjoying the confusion.

Now it was past one o'clock in the morning; the reception had ended, and the guests had disbursed. All the GE guys had made a special point to stop over to Jack and tell him it was the party of the year. Liz had rolled her eyes, positive Jack would be beaming about that even as he fell asleep. Jenna and Pete helped them upstairs with the card box and presents.

As the four of them got off the elevator together, Jenna grinned over at Jack. "So Jack, you're gonna carry Liz across the threshold, right? Every groom has to do that for his bride!"

Behind her, Liz heard Pete grumble, "Shut up, Jenna. Just leave them alone."

Liz smiled to herself, glad that someone was on her side, but the smile didn't last long as she heard Jack respond, "Of course I'm going to."

She looked up at him sharply. "What-now?"

Jack smiled enigmatically (in that kind smug way he had -- if there were more people around she'd kiss him to wipe that not-cute-at-all grin off his face) and told her, "Sorry, Lemon. It's a superstition I have."

"But--"

Jumping right into her train of thought, he answered, "Fabricated marriage or not, Lemon, I will be carrying you across the threshold."

Liz scowled and wanted to throw Jenna out the nearest window. Maybe if she hadn't suggested it, there could have been the tiniest chance Jack would've forgotten about that superstition of his. She made sure to glare daggers at Jenna, silently letting her know she was wishing death upon her. Jenna just smiled at her innocently and asked Jack where he wanted the presents.

"My suite is fine," he replied, as they all stopped together outside a pair of suites.

Liz looked up to see Pete's eyebrows climbing his forehead. "Your suite? You guys have your own suites?"

"Well of course!" Jack chuckled as if thinking anything differently was preposterous. "What else would we do for our wedding night?"

Jenna gave a shrug of both shoulder and face. "Get naked?"

Liz really, really wanted to kill her, please and thank you. She glanced up at Jack helplessly and was thrilled that he yet again could read her so damn well.

"Jenna, how much champagne have you had tonight?" he asked her.

Her eyes widened as she laughed and replied, "A LOT. Those GE hotties kept buying me drinks all night. I still don't know whether to go with Brett or Glen or David." She pondered that.

While she was pondering, Liz and Pete rolled their eyes in unison, and Jack unlocked his suite, opening the door and gesturing Pete inside. "Right in here is fine, thank you. Jenna? When you've made a decision about your throngs of GE admirers, could you place the card box on the coffee table, please?"

That seemed to snap Jenna back to life, and she hurried inside. Jack smiled when her and Pete started looking around the suite with wide eyes, and he shook his head as he made his way back over to his bride. "We can let them explore for a moment. Here..." He stepped around her and unlocked her suite with the other key card, swinging the door open.

Liz, amazed by the sight of the humongous room (biggest she'd ever seen -- it had, like... extra rooms and stuff), started to take a step forward, only to be stopped by Jack's hand on her arm. "Ah-ah-ah! Not so fast."

She sighed. "Jack, really, do you have to - oh!" She cried out in surprise as the earth suddenly shifted beneath her and she was scooped easily into Jack's arms. Her arms looped around his neck of their own volition and she gave him a small, surprised smile as he carried her over the threshold.

He just smiled right back at her. Maybe she'd have to call Doctor Spaceman before she left tomorrow about that butterfly thing in her stomach. Right now, those damn butterflies were going nuts in there. "Never mess with superstitions, Lemon," he told her lowly as he moved to set her down.

She slid down surprisingly gracefully (like a ballerina after a lift, almost, which was cool) for how dizzy she still felt, and landed on her feet softly with her hands on Jack's shoulders. He smiled, hands on her hips to steady her. "You didn't trip."

Her eyebrows flew up in amazement. "I know! I thought I was gonna make an ass of myself for a second there."

Jack chuckled a bit, which made her giggle, and then for a moment they just smiled at each other. Jack's hands were still on her hips, and hers were still on his shoulders. Then, it was as if what had happened out in the gardens came screaming back to them at the exact same time. She watched Jack's eyes float to her lips, and hers made the same path to his lips.

His thumbs stroked her hips bones as he stepped just a little closer, and she sucked in her breath. "Uh, Jack..."

Before she could make any kind of a real protest, the door adjoining the suites flew open and startled them apart. Pete rushed in holding up one of the gifts, which was making noise. "Guys, one of your presents is ringing."

Jenna bounced in after him excitedly. "You have to open it! It sounds like cell phones! And from the writing on the card, it looks like it might be from Tracy!"

Liz and Jack (and Pete too, actually) all stared at her, and she shrugged. "What? It's not like I opened it. Here." She shoved the card at Liz while Pete handed the ringing box to Jack.

They exchanged a glance filled with mingling curiosity and longing, and each tore into their respective gifts. Liz opened the card as Jack tore at the wrapping on the box.

"To the Donaghy's," she read aloud. "Happy Wedding Day, from Tracy. Sorry I couldn't make it, but weddings are boring." She shrugged facially, musing, "Short and sweet." She looked over at Jack, who had set the box on the coffee table (in the living room of the suite -- holy crap, this place was huge). "What'd we get?"

Jack chuckled and shook his head, lifting the items out of the box and handing one to Liz. "His and hers Blackberries."

"Oh my God, cool!" Jenna just about tore Liz's Blackberry out of her hand, playing with it. "I've always wanted one of these things but I'm still stuck with a stupid Sidekick." She grinned as something beeped at her. "Tracy sent you a text!"

Jack nodded and gently took the Blackberry from Jenna, handing it discretely back to his wife as he pressed a few buttons on his own. "I probably received the same one."

Liz opened her inbox and scanned the text, brows raising. "Happy Wedding Day, Liz and Jack. I hope you guys tear it up tonight because you both really need to get some. Love, Tracy." She tilted her head slightly. "Oookay, short but less sweet."

"Liz, what's that?"

She looked up to see Jenna pointing in the direction of the bedroom and followed where she was pointing. Her brows furrowed at the sight of two wrapped presents sitting on the bed, and as she moved toward them, Jack slid his hand across her stomach to halt her (and just about sent her heart up into her throat in the process). "Hang on," he whispered.

He dropped his hand from her stomach (and it was weird, but Liz was kinda disappointed -- yeah, she definitely needed to see a doctor about this) and addressed Jenna. "Those are my own gifts for Liz, but I'd like her to open them in private."

Jenna and Pete both raised their eyebrows, and while Pete nodded in understanding, acknowledgement, Jenna grinned. "Is it lingerie?"

"Okay!" Pete wrapped an arm around her shoulders and started dragging her toward the door with him. "Time to go. Let's get you into a cab and get you home, huh? That'd be a good idea."

"Bye guys!" Jenna called, giggling. "Have sex!"

"Bye guys!" Pete echoed. "Congrats and have a good rest of your night! We'll see you in a couple weeks!"

When the door slammed behind them, Jack and Liz turned to each other, both exhaling soft, nervous laughter. "Sorry about Jenna," Liz apologized. "She's just got this weird idea that--"

"That we should have sex," he finished, nodding. "I noticed."

"Sorry."

Jack shook his head and waved dismissively. "Just chalk it up to too much champagne, Lemon. It's alright. Now..." He made a grand, sweeping gesture toward the bedroom. "More presents await."

Liz brightened at the prospect of more presents (even though her stomach was still going nuts wondering what he got for her) and headed for the bedroom with Jack trailing behind her a bit more slowly. She bounced onto the bed in a kneeling position and grabbed for the first present. Jack joined her at the foot of the bed and placed his hand over her wrist to pause her.

"Before you open that, I feel I should clarify something."

Liz played with a corner of the wrapping paper, ripping it just a little bit. "Okay..."

"What you're going to find in there is not for you to wear for me."

Liz gulped. Was Jenna right?

"I just feel that today, tonight, it should be your night. Today you're a bride, Lemon, however meaningless it is for you--"

Liz wasn't sure if he sounded more hurt or matter-of-fact. It was really hard to tell sometimes.

"--and so today you should feel glamorous and beautiful. Even when you're sleeping." He released her wrist then, and nodded at the package. "So... open it."

Liz arched one eyebrow at him but followed his instructions, tearing the creme-colored wrapping paper off the gift and opening the box (which was clothes, most definitely clothes -- oh God maybe it really was lingerie). She sucked in her breath, held it, as she pulled the lid off the box and set it aside.

Reaching in, she pulled up a long, creme silk nightgown with spaghetti straps... not too slutty, but not too frumpy. Underneath that was a matching creme silk robe. "Jack, um..."

"I know it's not your usual bedtime attire, but I think you'd really find it very comfortable if you gave it a chance."

"Okay... thank you." She gave a close-lipped smile as she folded the items back into the box, sliding them up toward the pillows. She wasn't sure yet if she'd actually wear them or just ball them up in her suitcase.

"The other item I'd like for you to open when you're in Hawaii," he told her.

She grinned. "You realize that's just going to make me want to open it more?"

"I know," he chuckled, getting up and heading for the small table near the sliding glass door (geez, her room had a balcony too?), where a bottle of champagne was chilling. "That's why I am now going to distract you with some champagne."

She smirked and reluctantly got up off the bed, leaving her other present behind as she made her way over to join her husband at the sliding glass door.

Jack raised his glass in a toast, handing another to her and waiting for her to mirror his action. "To us. To pulling off a successful fake wedding."

"It's a real wedding Donaghy, only the emotion is fake." She grinned devilishly as she threw his words back at him, and clinked her glass against his.

Jack chuckled, looking utterly amused by her, and took a sip of his champagne. Liz followed suit, and for a moment they drank their champagne in silence.

"Let's go out here," Jack suggested, and reached for the handle on the sliding glass door, pulling it open to let the late May breeze inside. They stepped onto the balcony together and gazed down at the city below (from twelve floors up, yikes). Liz sighed, feeling his eyes on her but not wanting to turn and look. That could be dangerous.

"Could we..."

She looked up when she heard him hesitating, heard him struggling with his words (a true rarity for him), and noted his narrowed-eye, contemplative gaze on her. She just raised her eyebrows expectantly, patiently awaiting the rest of his question.

"Could we dance again, Elizabeth?"

Her stomach somersaulted, and he added, "Just the two of us? Just once more?"

She set her champagne glass down (she really needed to remember that champagne around him was a terrible idea) and drew in a slow, deep breath. "Jack, uh--"

"I promise I'll keep my lips to myself." He held up his hands in surrender. "Hands too."

At this, she smirked. "How are we supposed to dance, then? We'll just stand in front of each other and sway?"

Jack smiled and amended, "I'll keep my hands in appropriate places, then."

Liz nodded in acceptance. "That's all I would ask of you on a day-to-day basis, thank you."

He patted her waist and told her, "I'll be right back. I'm just going to queue up a CD."

She raised her eyebrows and watched him dart back inside. "The suites have stereos too?"

He shrugged nonchalantly. "Of course," and went off in search of a CD.

Liz stared at the path of his retreat and felt the butterflies once more going wild in her stomach. Slow-dancing... alone... with Jack... on their wedding night.

"Oh boy," she breathed, laying her palm across her fluttery stomach and trying to calm her nerves.

Liz had the distinct, foreboding sense that something big (and maybe not completely awful) was going to happen tonight.

Hehe, thanks! Glad you're still enjoying it! Drunken Jenna's such a blast to write. Especially with her blatant Jack/Liz shippery. :D

And thanks so much for the early birthday wishes!

Noooooooooo!!! You're leaving us there? I don't think I'll be able to survive through your vacation! Excellent chapter, as always. I will be impatiently awaiting the next installment (you really have spoiled me with the constant updates, you know).

Heee. I know, I'm a little bit evil, aren't I? It DID totally end up being a fluke that the chapter I left off with was kinda cliffhang-y. I swear. *nods, blinks innocently*

And you think YOU'RE the spoiled one? No no, my dear, I believe it is ME that has been spoiled by you and the rest of this band of awesome reviewers. Nice review after nice review... it's become like a drug to me. I might need another fix soon... ;D

Haha... I was going to save this for a few days from now, but I should know me better.
First- thank god Pete was there to balance out Jenna, because I could totally see all her pushing making Liz skittish.
Second- the presents were an awesome way to get them into the same suite (I had totally imagined them saying goodnight at the door) aaand I will be waiting to see what's in box #2! With Jack, the possibilities are endless ;)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND Have an awesome vacation!!
Your fic was definitely one of the highlights of mine!
a.: TF; i'm just your average jane;regalish on June 24th, 2007 10:48 pm (UTC)
Heeee! You are hilariously awesome and I ♥ you!

First -- HAD to bring Pete back, I love Pete. And he can totally balance out the crazy Jenna brings. :D

Second -- I'm glad you liked the presents idea, because in my mind it was a totally way-too-obvious attempt on my part to get them into the same suite. And yes, with Jack? Ya never know what you'll find in that box. ;)

Thanks so much for the birthday wishes! The vacation's turning out to be a blast so far (and I'm getting lots of new Jack/Liz ideas constantly, hehehe, so I guess it could be considered productive as well)!

Yes! Tracy makes an appearance! His message was in character but I was hoping for something...more flamboyant. Enjoy your break and thanks for so many updates these last few days.

Hehe, thanks much! Glad you liked this. I considered bringing Tracy into it during the reception, but since he is SO out there (moreso than Jack and Liz and Jenna combined, lol!), it was way too daunting to even attempt. So, a text message was the best I could do for right now. Maybe in the future I'll get up the courage to bring him into it :D

Caroline! I read one fic (and started this one) last night; today I had to find 30 Rock Thank you for getting me addicted to another TV show :-D I love it!

And I love this fic. Your characterisation is perfect, and I love the sexual tension between Jack and Liz. So many heart-stopping moments.

I really can't wait for more :-)

YAAAAAAAY! *dances around, singing* I got Jac addicted! I got Jac addicted!

Isn't it fantastic? I had seen commercials for it earlier in the TV season and actually thought it looked kinda dumb... but then my pal dollsome convinced me that I would absolutely fall for the dysfunction of the main pair... which is exactly what I did when I watched my first episode, "Black Tie." GUH.

I'm so glad you're enjoying this fic thus-far!! More is coming up very, very soon :D

!!! Oh, man, this chapter was, like, super-extra-great. In addition to all of the Jack/Liz stuff, which is, of course, killing me with its wonderfulness, all of the other characters were just awesome here! I looooove drunk!Jenna ("Have sex!"), and Pete being all awesome and beleaguered and Petelike trying to keep her in line, and TRACY'S GIFT, OMG. That cracked me up so hard. I could hear the "weddings are boring" part in his voice so delightfully.

Maybe she'd have to call Doctor Spaceman before she left tomorrow about that butterfly thing in her stomach. Right now, those damn butterflies were going nuts in there.

And, oh, man, that just killed me, thinking of what on earth our good doctor would say about that. I can't even endeavor to imagine what he'd come up with, because he is crazy and my brain isn't caffeinated enough yet for that level of creative thought, but . . . dude.

AND ONCE MORE WITH SLOW-DANCING. YOU ARE TRYING TO KILL ME WITH GORGEOUS SHIPPINESS. I'M ONTO YOU.

(Say, was the threshold carrying at all inspired by a certain Mr. Baldwin picking up a certain Ms. Fey during a certain SNL monologue? ;-D)
a.: M/S; a case for mulder and scully;regalish on June 30th, 2007 08:48 pm (UTC)
Hehehehehe! This was the funnest chapter by far to write for me, so I'm glad you got a kick out of it, too!! Drunk!Jenna is about the 3rd greatest thing ever (the 2nd being Drunk!Jack and the first being, of course, Drunk!Liz), so I had to bring her into it, hahaha. And I just love Pete way too much and his ability to remain sane around all these crazy people.

Hehehehe, Dr. Spaceman! Lord knows what he'd say. After all, "medicine is not a science." HAHAHAHA.

I'M OBSESSED WITH SLOW-DANCING, HEEEEE. I can't help it!! If I could manage to write a fic that consisted ENTIRELY of slow-dancing, I'd SO do it.

(The threshold-carrying, oddly enough, was written in BEFORE I found that delightful little gem on YouTube. Which is why I was completely delighted when I saw it happen before my very eyes. MY FIC CAME TO LIFE, DUDE. YESSSSSS. It *almost* made Alec & Tina shippable. Now if only he would do that on the show.....)

I decided to treat myself to a chapter before I went to bed, and I loved it. As usual. Jenna and Pete, and Jack and Liz (♥). And I loved Tracy's note. (And I was glancing over your replies to the other commenters, and I totally understand how daunting the idea of writing Tracy is. It was hard enough for me to get the hang of Jack.) But, anyway! I'm looking forward to catching up with this.

Hehe, thanks so much! Yes, Tracy is unbelievably frightening to write. I totally agree -- Jack was hard enough, hahaha! :D

Thanks again! Can't wait to get your reaction on the coming chapters ;)
