Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 7: Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue
FANDOM: 30 Rock
PAIRING: Jack/Liz
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"
RATING: PG
SUMMARY:

*****

"Kenneth, could you please make sure the pizza guy remembers to bring the sodas this time?" Liz raised an eyebrow at the young, Southern page.

Kenneth smiled brightly and mock-saluted her. "Yes ma'am, Ms. Lemon!" he exclaimed, and tilted his head slightly in wonderment. "Isn't it funny? In just a few days I'll have to start getting used to calling you Mrs. Donaghy!"

"No," Liz smiled tightly, "You won't. That's okay, Kenneth."

"But... you are still marrying Mr. Donaghy, aren't you? I sure hope so. I've already made a special trip to the Men's Wearhouse to get a new suit! I normally just wear my page jacket and a nice shirt, but I figure I'll need something nicer, since it's your wedding and all."

Liz felt a migraine coming on. A huge, wedding-sized migraine. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Thank you, Kenneth! Thanks. You can head back to your desk now."

That bright, innocent smile of his made her headache even worse. "Sure thing, Ms. Lemon!"

When he was gone, Liz let out her breath (all of it, kinda hoping to pass out from lack of oxygen) and sat down heavily in one of the hard plastic chairs in the writers' room. When she looked up, it was to find all the writers staring at her questioningly. She faked a reassuring smile. "Let's get back to work, shall we?"

"Liz, don't you think you could maybe take a few days off?" Toofer suggested, concern on his face. "I mean, your wedding is in just a couple days and you seem like you're really, really stressed. Maybe you just need time to finalize all the preparations."

"Guys, I've said a million times, I am not at all stressed about the wedding. Not nervous, not thrilled, not scared... I'm not anything about it. I know that it's in a couple of days but I'm really fine. Besides, I've got two weeks off afterward."

"Oh right, the honeymoon," Frank joined in, blinking bleary eyes behind his huge, Coke-bottle-thick glasses. "You guys gonna do it on a beach somewhere?" He resituated his 'Bikini Inspector' trucker hat and offered, "You need someone to come along and tape it?"

Liz scribbled furiously on the pad of paper she'd been writing on. "No, and no. But thank you, Frank."

"Where are you going?" One of the other writers piped up.

Liz sighed, wishing this whole thing could be over... or that a giant hole would open in the Earth and she could plummet to her death -- she'd be okay with either scenario. "Well, I'm going to Hawaii." She shrugged and resumed her scribbling on the notepad. "I dunno where Jack's going."

She completely missed (ignored) the confused stares of her writing staff.

*****

Liz shut herself in her office for the rest of the day, kind of glad that everyone was too scared of her at this point to question her further. In her office, she was able to think. In her office, she was away from the wedding, away from Jack, away from Jack's spacious penthouse... which she had moved into in the past week. She shook her head to herself, still wondering just what kind of magic trick he'd performed to get her to agree to that.

"We want it to be convincing, Lemon. At least for awhile."

"Okay."

Liz shrugged facially. She supposed she hadn't really interrogated him about it that much. And it was a really nice penthouse. Like really, really nice. Like "Architectural Digest," or... one of those other magazines with really nice houses and stuff... that kind of nice. He had arranged for her to sublet her apartment while she was living with him, with the promise that he would pull any strings he had to to break the sublease agreement when she was ready to move back in. And that had been... oddly sweet.

As was him making up the second bedroom for her. She still remembered her shock at realizing that he wasn't forcing her to share a bed, or even a bedroom, with him....

"Look, I know that this might be the longest relationship you've had so far--"

She had glared at him for that one, but he'd taken no notice...

"--and I know that things have been moving at warp-speed and that's probably a little unusual for you, so... I just wanted you to know I'm willing to do whatever I need to, to make you feel as comfortable as possible in this... uncomfortable situation."

"Wow." There had been nothing better to say. "Um... thank you, Jack." She'd felt a genuine smile creeping across her face, then. It had been impossible to stop. "I appreciate that."

Jack had just patted her shoulder and moved past her, allowing her to look around her new bedroom.

That had been her first night in the penthouse. And it had been really... oddly normal. As normal as sharing a home with Jack Donaghy could have been, anyway. He had ordered "some of that greasy peasant food" that she liked, and let her eat in the living room while watching TV, as he checked his stocks online (and spent a considerable amount of time watching "wacky" animal videos on YouTube).

"Liz?" Knuckles tapped carefully on her door as it creaked open... and Pete poked his head in. "Hey. You okay?"

Liz nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. "Yeah. I'm fine, Pete. Come in."

He did so and shut the door gently behind him (as if slamming it would make her fly off the handle -- did everyone think she was crazy now? Stupid wedding.); he took a seat across from her desk and leaned forward, elbows on his thighs, as he said softly, "I don't want to start anything, but... Toofer was right. You seem just a little stressed. Anything you feel like talking about?"

"Pete..."

"I know, and I'm sorry for even bringing it up." He grinned. "I'm just trying to prevent a casualty. Some of the writers think you might be close to going on a rampage."

"I moved in with Jack last week," she blurted out.

Pete's brows flicked halfway up his forehead, but he took a moment to absorb what she'd said. Finally, he spoke. "Okay. And... is that what's stressing you out?"

"I don't know. It's just... it's everything."

"Uh-huh..." He was nodding thoughtfully, and templed his hands under his chin, regarding her like a therapist might (and maybe a therapist wasn't such a bad idea -- she'd need one to survive this marriage -- hell, to survive the wedding). "Is it weird, living with Jack?"

"Not really." She made a face. "I guess that in and of itself is kinda weird, huh?"

"Not really," he echoed. "You guys have grown... familiar with each other at the office."

"And we're not sleeping together," she felt the need to clarify (it still freaked her out if anybody so much as implied that there might be something sexual between her and Jack, because... ew). "I have my own room, down the hall from his. I have my own bathroom, too. It's a huge penthouse."

"Okay. Well, so you guys are basically roommates. That's not... that insane." He walked through it verbally, slowly. "You're roommates... who work together... who have no romantic interest in each other whatsoever... who are getting married." He shrugged and made a face. "What's weird about that?"

Liz narrowed her eyes at her friend, but was unable to prevent the smile nudging at her lips. "That was sarcasm, wasn't it?"

Pete grinned, and chuckled slightly. "Yes. Yes it was."

"Nice job," she congratulated him, as Jenna and Cerie came through the door.

"Liz!" Jenna exclaimed, excitement in her wide, bright eyes as she rushed up to the desk. "We have been out all day trying to find your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue! And... we did it!"

"Well, kind of," Cerie jumped in. "We're still missing your something new."

Pete, now looking slightly bewildered surrounded by so much estrogen, stood up and headed for the door, calling over his shoulder, "I think that's my cue to run as fast as I can away from all this. See ya, Liz! Good talk."

"Bye, Pete!" Liz called back, and turned her attention to the two blondes now occupying her office chairs. "Alright, so what did you get?"

"First... something old," Jenna announced, and slid a jewelry box across the desk to her. "I found that necklace Jack picked out for you to wear to Gerhardt's party. It would look great with your dress!"

"Okay..." Liz opened the box and ran her fingers over the necklace, flashing back to an uncomfortable moment in her apartment when Jack had taken the necklace off of her (and she foolishly thought he'd been about to kiss her. ....Ew).

"For something borrowed," Jenna continued, holding up what looked suspiciously like a garter, "this is the garter I was going to use in my wedding to David Blaine. I bought it the morning after we got engaged." She smiled wistfully. "Just a week before we called off the wedding."

Liz raised her eyebrows. "Nice."

"And for something blue..." Cerie reached into her purse and pulled out what looked like a blue ball of lace. She dropped it into Liz's palm. "I got you some hot blue underwear for under your dress. I had to guess your size, though... I figured medium would be an okay guess, right?"

Liz shrugged facially. It wasn't as insulting as her choosing large would have been. "That's... fine, thank you."

Jenna smiled. "Now you just need something new and you'll be all set!"

Liz feigned a smile. "Great."

Knuckles rapping once more on the door caused all three women to look up, to find Jack in the doorway. Liz hurriedly stuffed the underwear, garter and necklace in her desk drawer as Jack entered.

"Ladies, hello. Lemon, couldn't help overhearing -- because I was eavesdropping -- that you need something new for the wedding. I think I found something."

All three women raised their eyebrows in interest (while Liz hoped like hell he hadn't overheard the part about the blue underwear) as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a slim jewelry case. With an excited, almost boyish smile, he handed the box to her. "Here, open it."

Liz eyed him for a moment, then glimpsed quick at Jenna and Cerie. Cerie was leaning forward in interest while Jenna was practically bouncing with delight. Liz cracked open the box and her eyes widened. "Jack..."

"I know you're not one for flashy jewelry," he explained, "So I decided to keep it simple. Understated, but tasteful."

And he had done exactly that. He'd purchased for her a liquid silver bracelet with small flower charms (which coordinated perfectly with the flowers on her dress -- how the hell did he do that?); in the center of each flower was a tiny (but probably very, very real) diamond. "This is..." She shook her head and stood up, snapping the box shut and handing it back to him. "This is too much, Jack. I can't... I can't accept this."

He refused to take the box from her. "Elizabeth, I insist." He smiled (and it was a rather disarming sight -- damn him) and told her, "Think of it as an early wedding present from a groom to his bride."

She thought the room was starting to spin. "Um... okay. Thanks."

"I do hope you'll wear that on Saturday," he went on, none of them noticing the color draining from Liz's face. Had he just called her his bride? She was his?

Liz just nodded numbly, and was too numb to even react when Jack took her hand and gently kissed her knuckles before bidding them all farewell and leaving the way he came in. When he was gone, she sat down heavily and dropped the jewelry case on the desk, staring at it as if there was an alien virus inside.

Jenna and Cerie watched her with twin smiles, and Cerie gushed, "Awww, he loves you, Liz. That is so sweet."

For some reason, Liz couldn't find the strength (or words -- where did all her words go?) to disagree.

First review? Am I first review? *squees*

Anyway...

First of all, I love your Kenneth Le Page. I could see him grinning and saluting and all that! *laughs like an idiot*

"But... you are still marrying Mr. Donaghy, aren't you? I sure hope so. I've already made a special trip to the Men's Wearhouse to get a new suit! I normally just wear my page jacket and a nice shirt, but I figure I'll need something nicer, since it's your wedding and all." Oh yes, get him out of that Page suit!

Second, my love of Jack's love of You Tube grows strong. Heehee. He does not at all check the stock. He spends most of internet time in You Tube.

Third, no matter how fake the emotions will run in the wedding, I am condifent they will "un-faken" in due time.

*bangs head on keyboard as she realizes that the word she is looking for is "genuine"*

Hahaha! You are hilariously awesome and I heart you!

By the time I got around to writing this chapter, it hit me like a ton of bricks that I hadn't yet included Kenneth. After being appalled by my neglect of such an awesome character, I decided to drag him in with all his naive, sweet-Southern-boy excitement over the Donaghy nuptials :D

And Jack + YouTube = OTP. hahahahah. That panda video thing from the show was one of the cutest Jack moments ever, so I had to incorporate his love of animal videos.

Glad you're still getting a kick out of this!

YAY YOU for starting on 30 Rock! You've stumbled upon an awesome show!

And it means a lot that you would take the time to read this after only seeing a couple episodes! I'm thrilled you're enjoying it so far; there's lots more to come!

(And yes, 30 Rock did get renewed for a second season! Yay! Definitely catch up on the Thursday repeats on NBC if you can!)

Hehe, thank you!! Glad you're liking my version of Jack (since I was worried he was getting out-of-character). Chapter eight will be up soon!

Thank you so, SO much! I'm so glad you gave my fic a chance! And I totally know what you mean about the quality of fanfic out there these days; grammar/spelling/characterization/etc. is a big pet peeve of mine (don't know whether it's because I'm an author or not). I barely read it anymore, either, unless I'm familiar with the author.

Thank you again very much, and I do hope you'll read future chapters! Chapter eight should be posted soon :)

I just cannot get over how the pacing of this mimics that of the show. It's a great balance of characters and Liz's thoughts, etc.
Also, I love how the tension is being drawn out by Jack's denial of any feelings, while Liz sees all evidence to the contrary. And there are so many little moments that really glue the story together, like the whole "twirling the ring around her finger" thing a few chapters back. And Kenneth's Men's Wearhouse suit. And medium-size underwear. :)
I had to scroll up to cover up the "animals on YouTube" sentence because my eyes kept drifting back to it.

This is just such a joy to read, and I'm so glad this caught my eye a while back because I really never read FF anymore. So, Thanks!

Thank you! What a sweet thing to say.

I am absolutely in love with how they pace that show (in a way, it reminds me a little of Arrested Development), so I really try my hardest to pay homage to that. I'm thrilled to hear you think I'm doing okay with that.

Thanks again, so much, for such a kind review!

*tries deserately to stop smiling, but fails horribly* Another excellent chapter! And you brought Kenneth in, yay! You wrote Kenneth pefectly, just as you've done with all of the characters. And seriously, your Jack is so irresistably adorable, Liz really has no chance of not falling in love with him! Excellent story. You are pacing this beautifully and I love all of the little touches that you throw in that make it so much like the show. I love this fic!!!

Heee, yay! Glad you're still likin' it!

I absolutely had to bring Kenneth into the story! I realized about part way through writing the previous chapter that I'd been neglecting him. And I just love Kenneth.

Glad you like my version of Jack, too, hehehe. I just love when he's all happy and adorable (like when he was showing Liz the panda video! Hehehe) :D

Thanks so much, again!

P.S. I love your icon, hahaha. SBC is hot.

How did I almost miss this chapter? That's it. I'm never spending 7 hours in my basement watching ABC pilots and My Name is Earl DVDs without checking my friends page ever again.

"Well, I'm going to Hawaii." She shrugged and resumed her scribbling on the notepad. "I dunno where Jack's going."

Amazing. Your characterizations are impeccable.

I'm running out of compliments to give this fic, but I assume you won't mind if I recycle my previous comments about how well you write the characters? :) This is just a lot of fun, and so well-written. And Kenneth = awesome. Pete also = awesome, btw, which I don't think I mentioned in the previous chapter.

Aww, thanks muchly! Kenneth & Pete are a couple of my fave characters (aside from Jack & Liz of course), so I had to give them some love. :D

Chapter 8 will be up tonight!

Ok- I totally squeed at that last line!!!!! This was just so cute!!!

So, I'm gonna mix it, cuz thats just how I roll...and I'm gonna do a different kind of list!! Yeah!!

So, my fave things about this chap.!!

1. Liz's aversion to all things sexual.
2. Kenneth
3. Jack being so sweet...and evesdropping.
4. Jack calling her Elizabeth!!
5. Jack/Liz living together! And it seeming normal!
6. Jenna being engaged to David Blaine
7. Liz shrugging with her face!!
8. Jack being able to pick out a bracelet that perfectly matches her dress.
9. And did I mention Jack being sweet!!!!!!

But poor Liz, she's so stressed out. Jack really needs to help her ;)
