Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 5: For Favors and/or Love
FANDOM: 30 Rock
PAIRING: Jack/Liz
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"
RATING: PG
SUMMARY:

*****

"I think I'll just stay in here!"

Jenna rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest. "Liz, your five minute try-on doesn't start until you come out here! Now get out here and lemme see that dress on you!"

"Jenna, I really don't like this."

"What, like it looks bad?" she questioned, moving closer to the door Liz was hiding behind.

"No, that's not it."

Jenna grinned. "It looks too good?"

For a long moment, she didn't receive a response. She was about to call for her friend again when Liz suddenly came around the corner, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles in the satin. Jenna gasped. And then shrieked.

And Liz really wished she was still hiding in the costume room, away from view.

"Oh my God, Liz, you look amazing!"

Liz made a face. It wasn't that she disagreed with Jenna -- she actually thought she looked nice in the dress too. The problem was, she looked too nice. She looked beautiful, even... and she never thought she looked beautiful in anything. Not even in the dress she'd worn to the creepy German guy's birthday party. Then she thought she looked maybe borderline attractive at best.

But today, in this dress (her wedding dress, her overly-irritating brain nagged her), she looked and felt beautiful. And that was really, really bad. It wouldn't have been as bad had she picked out her own dress and thought she looked good. No, the big problem here was that Jack chose this dress for her, with her in mind, probably knowing in that weirdly-sharp mind of his exactly how she would look in it. And that's what was very, very bad.

Jack had chosen her dress for the other event as well, something equally scary. The first one hadn't been bad, but she didn't like how shiny and vibrant the red of that one was, so she'd grabbed the second one he'd chosen; and that one had fit like he had it made just for her. She remembered kind of damning him when she slipped into it. She damned him again when he had come in with a "Wow" as a greeting.

Now here she was, in a wedding dress that fit her perfectly -- the empire waist and bust contoured her like second skin, the flare of the skirt flirted with the flare of her hips in just the right way, and the hem was neither too long (dragging on the floor, swiffering the dust bunnies) nor too short (making Paris Hilton blush). Maybe Jack was some kind of evil genius.

"Wow!" Yet again, she was greeted by Jack's amazement at seeing her in something formal, and his eyes were doing that thing they did the last time... kind of burning her from head to toe.

Liz really wanted to glare at him, but... she sort of couldn't. She was oddly transfixed by the look he was giving her. And she was unfortunately unable to say anything more intelligible than, "Do I look okay?"

Jack opened his mouth to say something (and she was pretty sure his eyes were firmly centered on her chest, but she wasn't entirely sure that was a bad thing), then closed it again, finally chuckling his shock and telling her, "Lemon, you look..."

"Amazing?" Jenna offered, grinning like an idiot. Liz totally would've punched her in the shoulder if, you know... if Jack wasn't looking at her like that.

"No, not amazing." Jack shook his head, and Liz furrowed her brow.

He smiled reassuringly, "Luminous."

Liz raised her eyebrows. "Well, um... thank you, Jack." Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Jenna practically bouncing with excitement.

Jack came toward her suddenly and Liz's heart jumped into her throat when he reached his hands toward her. "May I?"

"Uh... Jack..." This was that necklace thing all over again, he was coming closer...

Instead of kissing her, he slipped his hands under her hair and, with a couple quick flicks of his wrists, had her hair spun up, much like it had been for Gerhardt's party. Then, he steered her over to the lit vanity mirror, standing behind her as he held her hair. "There."

She made a face. "There what?"

"That's how you should wear your hair. That look suits you, Lemon."

"What kind of veil will she have?" Jenna piped up, joining them by the mirrors and fixing her curls.

"I don't want a veil," Liz commented, wrinkling her nose at her reflection.

Jack's reflection nodded and released her hair, letting it cascade back down against her shoulders. "I agree. No veil... maybe some baby's breath would be nice." He patted her shoulders then and brushed past her. "I should go, I've got another meeting. Elizabeth, you look astounding, and Jenna..."

He stopped in front of her and Jenna grinned up at him hopefully. He narrowed his eyes slightly and told her gently, "Maybe a little less eyeliner for you. It makes you look tired."

Then, he was gone.

Liz let out her breath as if she'd been holding it for a half hour. Then, to herself (but loud enough that Jenna would most certainly hear), she whispered, "What the hell is going on here?"

Jenna just smiled smugly at her and leaned against the vanity table, crossing her legs at the ankle and folding her arms over her chest. "Well Liz, I've tried to tell you what's going on here, but you never listen!"

"Jack doesn't have a thing for me!" she hissed.

Jenna rolled her eyes. "Oh right, so that's why he was ripping that dress off you with his eyes and smiling at you like a lovesick schoolboy. Face it Liz, he's got it bad for you." She raised her eyebrows and gestured to the doorway Jack had disappeared through. "He asked you to marry him, for crying out loud!"

"Yeah, as a last-ditch attempt to get some dumb microwave crap back. After he tried to propose to a random British chick. Yeah, that totally smacks of him being in love with me."

"Well I think there's more there than you're letting yourself see. I mean, seriously... he was crazy jealous when you were with Floyd--"

Liz rolled her eyes. "He was just mad because I wasn't spending every waking moment at my job. He said I was shirking my responsibilities."

"He horned in on all your dates with Floyd--"

"Yeah, so if anything, Jack was maybe in love with Floyd."

"He still does that weird mentoring thing even though he knows you don't need it. He does it just to hang around you."

"No, he does it so he can be there to see me mess up, and then lecture me about how I could've done things differently to save myself from such an embarrassing screw-up."

Jenna rolled her eyes again and sighed, "Liz, you are so beyond stubborn."

"No, I'm not stubborn -- I'm right. Jack does not have a thing for me, I do not have a thing for him. I'm doing him a favor and that's it."

Jenna just smirked, uncrossed her ankles and brushed past Liz, leaving her alone in the costume room in her wedding dress. Liz huffed and went back over to the mirror, studying herself. She spun up her hair just as Jack had done and turned her face this way and that, biting her lip softly as she wondered if Jenna was right.

Jack certainly did seem to know what looks worked for her, which meant he paid close enough attention to be able to discern such a thing. And he did smile at her (and look at her) in that certain way.

Her stomach flopped, and she stared at her reflection in shock. "Oh, God."

She was marrying Jack as a favor, but... maybe he was marrying her for love.

Thanks for killing me with that last line, there.

"Amazing?" Jenna offered, grinning like an idiot. Liz totally would've punched her in the shoulder if, you know... if Jack wasn't look at her like that.

Awesome line, but it should be 'looking at her like that'.

=] This is shaping up nicely! Ooh!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you found your way to this fic!

The degree to which Jack knows her on the show is just fantastic; I couldn't NOT toss that in, hehe. Even from the Pilot he knew her pretty darn well, with that whole knitting thing.

And I agree -- we need more Jack/Liz fics! :D

More to come soon!

I heart you so much. Jack DID feel like a lovesick schoolboy. And it's all your Lemon Liz Darling's fault! *fangirl squee*

and his eyes were doing that thing they did the last time... kind of burning her from head to toe.

^ Yes, this is the much better version of "ripping the dress off". Glee!

"Yeah, so if anything, Jack was maybe in love with Floyd."

^LOL!

Hearts you once again.

Hehehehe! Jack as a lovesick schoolboy is just so adorable; I kept in mind his amazement at how she looked in her dress in "Black Tie", and the moment in "Hard Ball" when she's making Josh do the worm and Jack looks just absolutely delighted by her. *squees with you*

Also? I'll be milking that "darling" thing for all it's worth, hahahaha. Glad you liked this chapter! Six will be up REAL soon. :D

This chapter = major squees!
"Elizabeth, you look astounding, and Jenna..." (squee- he called her Elizabeth!!)

Jack was maybe in love with Floyd (caused a bit of a laugh attack, as Karen would say--'it's funny cuz it's true.')

"Oh right, so that's why he was ripping that dress off you with his eyes and smiling at you like a lovesick schoolboy. Face it Liz, he's got it bad for you." (when did Jenna get so smart?!?!)

Jack chose this dress for her, with her in mind, probably knowing in that weirdly-sharp mind of his exactly how she would look in it. (he would. he so totally would.)

She was oddly transfixed by the look he was giving her. And she was unfortunately unable to say anything more intelligible than, "Do I look okay?" (major squee! its so cute!)

She was marrying Jack as a favor, but... maybe he was marrying her for love. (this just killed me)

So you rock. And this story rocks.
