Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 2: But It's Jack
FANDOM: 30 Rock
PAIRING: Jack/Liz
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"
RATING: PG
SUMMARY:

*****

"But Liz, I like that Jessica Simpson sketch! Can't we cut Tracy's stupid nature-show-guy sketch?" Jenna trailed on Liz's heels and tromped into her office. "Come on, I'm really good as Jessica! I watched tons of 'Newlyweds' to prepare! I mean, I've pretty much got that Chicken of the Sea thing down-pat."

"I'm sorry, Jenna, but we're running six minutes too long," Liz sighed, and opened up her laptop to log on. "The writers voted to cut that one."

"Typical," Jenna huffed, and plopped gracelessly onto the couch. She immediately made a face, "What the hell am I sitting on?" and reached under her, into the sofa cushions. When she pulled up the velvet box, she smirked, stifling a laugh. "Liz, since when do you keep jewelry in the couch?"

Liz's eyes widened. A few days had passed and she'd almost forgotten about the ring Jack had tossed there. "Give me that!"

"What is it?" She opened it up and gasped. "Oh, wow. Look at that rock." Then, she turned wide eyes up to her best friend. "Liz, did cute lawyer-flower boy propose already? Wow, he works fast."

Liz snatched the ring box away and put it on her desk. "Floyd is his name, and no he didn't. This is Jack's."

If possible, Jenna's eyes got even wider. "Whoa whoa whoa. Jack Donaghy?"

"Yes, and it's no big deal. It was his ex-wife's, he bought it back from some Arab guy to propose to a hollow-boned British chick."

The look on Jenna's face was easy to read -- whatever Liz had said wasn't computing. "...What?"

Liz closed her eyes and shook her head, waving her hand dismissively. "It's not important."

"Well so what's the ring doing in here?"

"It was this whole big stupid thing. I convinced him not to propose to the British girl, so he turned right around and proposed to me, I told him he had to calm down and he just left the ring there."

"Okay, once again? Whoa! Back up, Liz. Jack proposed to you?"

"Not... in so many words. He just said that we should get married."

Jenna's eyebrows flew up practically into her hair. "Okay yeah, that's pretty much proposing. And why is he proposing to you?" She grinned, not waiting for an answer. "I knew he had a thing for you."

"He does not," Liz made a face. "He's just freaking out about losing the microwave division, and thinks he can somehow get it back by spontaneously getting married."

"Wow, weird. But so completely awesome!" Jenna giggled, and then leaned forward on the couch, forearms leaning on her thighs as she excitedly asked, "Are you gonna say yes?"

"No!" Liz looked downright outraged (possibly disgusted) at the thought.

"Well why not? I would."

"Well that's one reason right there."

Jenna tilted her head, giving her best friend a look. "Ha, ha."

"Another is -- umm hello? -- Floyd."

"So what? I don't see him proposing to you."

"You sound just like Jack. Maybe you should marry him."

"Yeah, right," she laughed. "Like he could keep up with me sexually."

Liz scrunched up her face. "Ugh... Jenna..."

"Lemon? There you are, I've looked everywhere for you."

Jenna seemed to perk up in interest when Jack entered the room, her eyes flitting between him and Liz as if she were watching a soap opera. Liz, taking no notice, furrowed her brows at Jack. "Where did you look for me?"

"The writers' room, and... the hallway." He stepped toward her, reaching into the pocket of his suit. "Listen, did you give any thought over the weekend to..." He threw a surreptitious glance at Jenna over his shoulder, who looked away and pretended not to be paying attention, before he looked back at Liz and dropped his voice, "to what I offered?"

Liz pressed her lips together and shook her head. "Nope."

"Ah. Okay, well..." Jack pulled an envelope out of his suit pocket and handed it to her. "Here. This is part of what we discussed."

She held the envelope between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, eyeing it warily as if it might be filled with anthrax. "I'm not going to find a severed finger in here, am I?"

Jack laughed heartily. "No, of course not." He shook his head, and said more seriously, "It didn't have to come to that." He smiled wistfully. "But she's a feisty old woman, my grandmother Donaghy."

Liz feigned a smile, which came off as more of a grimace. "How lovely."

"Yes, well, look that over and... get back to me by tomorrow with your decision."

"Okay..."

Jack headed for the door then and waved over his shoulder. "Thank you, Lemon. Goodbye, Jenna."

"Bye, Jack!" Jenna called, sing-song, leaning over to watch him leave before she got up and rushed to Liz's desk. "What did he give you?"

"I dunno, an envelope."

"Well open it!" she insisted, eyes alight with barely-suppressed glee.

Liz sighed and reached for her letter opener, dreading what she'd find inside. Her somersaulting stomach gave her a good idea of what it would be, and her suspicions were confirmed when, once it was open, she upended it and a diamond ring fell into her open palm.

Jenna squealed and jumped up and down, snatching the ring from Liz's hand and holding it up to the light to inspect it. "Wow, it's gorgeous! At least a karat or two, and the band looks like white gold." She handed it back to her friend, gushing, "It's a princess cut, Liz! You have to say yes!"

Liz closed her fist around the ring, not even minding when it started to dig into the sensitive flesh of her palm (that pain was a refreshing change from the headache that was coming on, after all) and stared up at her friend dumbfounded. "Am I the only one that finds this situation really incredibly weird?"

"Yes. I would've accepted right away."

"But... it's Jack," Liz sighed, feeling that was explanation enough.

Jenna took a seat in the chair across from the desk and tilted her head. "Liz, I know this is really incredibly fast for you and out-of-the-blue, but... think about it! You'd be married to one of the richest, most powerful guys in the world--"

"Always a top priority on my list," Liz broke in sarcastically.

Jenna glared facetiously and kept going. "And you know he would treat you like a goddess. Remember how he was at that German guy's birthday party? Didn't you say he was really chivalrous? And come on, that 'Pretty Woman' thing he tried to do with the necklace was adorable." She smiled and leaned forward. "Liz, Jack is a really great guy and he'd treat you well. It might be weird at first since you guys have never gone on a date, but so what? Plenty of people date for years, get married and then get divorced half a year later. Maybe this way could work."

"But..." Liz was still struggling to wrap her mind around this situation, "it's Jack."

Jenna just grinned and headed for the door. "Way I see it, Liz, you've got nothing to lose... and tons of cool rich-people crap to gain."

When she disappeared around the corner, Liz sighed disgustedly at her friend's relationship values (or lack thereof). She opened her palm and stared down at the ring... took it between her thumb and forefinger to do an inspection of her own. Marrying Jack Donaghy was out of the question, she thought as she slipped the ring onto her left ring finger and held her flexed hand out to get a better look at it. The ring seemed to fit perfectly, though, like it was made for her. And... it really was rather pretty.

She shook her head at herself, then; shook herself out of the weird diamond-induced trance she'd fallen into, and yanked the ring off her finger, shoving it in her purse. She then grabbed her cell phone and left her office, deciding that tonight would be a good night to go out with Floyd. Maybe he could help her get back to the rabbit hole she'd fallen down.

Ahahaha! WIN.

I love this so much! You've got all the characterization just perfect; I really, really enjoyed the Liz/Jenna interaction in this part. They are such slightly bewildering yet entirely delightful bff's.

And oh my gosh, DO IT, LIZZZZ.

Can't wait to see more of this, you! :D

(Also! I'm sorry I missed you on MSN yesterday! I left my computer on while I was in town, and my internet must have kept connecting or something. Grrargh.)

Don't worry about missing me. I think my sarcasm kinda got lost on MSN with your quick leaving, BWA. I was SO gonna channel Andy, too: "Sorry I annoyed you with my friendship!" *guffaw*

Oh, also? You would be SO proud of me!! I converted sinistercircus into a 30 Rock, AND Jack/Liz fan!! *pats self on back*

See what you've done? You've created a monster. This is like that government-created killer nano-robot infection.

I am totally digging this. It's funny, and I think your voices for Jack, Liz and Jenna are great. I know this part was already pointed out, but:

She held the envelope between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, eyeing it warily as if it might be filled with anthrax. "I'm not going to find a severed finger in here, am I?"

Jack laughed heartily. "No, of course not." He shook his head, and said more seriously, "It didn't have to come to that."

It is perfect so I had to quote it, too. Looking forward to reading more. :)

Wow, thank you so much! I'm so thrilled to hear you're enjoying this, especially since it was your Jack/Liz fics that pretty much inspired me to start writing some of my own :D

More to come soon!

I've decided I'm just gonna review this whole story in one day. So my fave parts were:
"Marrying Jack Donaghy was out of the question, she thought as she slipped the ring onto her left ring finger and held her flexed hand out to get a better look at it. The ring seemed to fit perfectly, though, like it was made for her. And... it really was rather pretty." (so sweet!!!)

"You sound just like Jack. Maybe you should marry him."
"Yeah, right," she laughed. "Like he could keep up with me sexually."
Liz scrunched up her face. "Ugh... Jenna..." (I can totally see this.)

She held the envelope between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, eyeing it warily as if it might be filled with anthrax. "I'm not going to find a severed finger in here, am I?"

Jack laughed heartily. "No, of course not." He shook his head, and said more seriously, "It didn't have to come to that." (Total perfection with the voices.)

So, you are pretty much amazing. And, yeah. Now I'm gonna go review chapter 3...
