Crazy Has a Way [The Office; Michael/Jan]
TITLE: Crazy Has a Way
FANDOM: The Office
PAIRING: Michael/Jan
SPOILERS: My own fic, "Realtor Mode" -- read that first or you'll be lost!
RATING: PG
SUMMARY:

*****

"So Michael, I've brought those items I need your signature on before we can finalize everything on your house--"

"Thanks for meeting me here again, Carol." Michael Scott tilted his head, smiling sympathetically. "I know it was kinda weird the last time."

Carol Stills raised her eyebrows and bit back a comment. The last time she met Michael at this cafe in the mall he had announced he was getting married... to his boss, Jan, as she found out only moments later. "No problem. How is everything?"

"Great! Just great. Well... sorta."

"Sorta?" She shouldn't have asked. She knew she shouldn't have asked.

"Well... as you know I got married a couple months ago."

She nodded. "I vaguely remember that, yes."

"Well... and things have been great with that! Really great, like we're still totally in that honeymoon phase. You know? The whole can't-keep-our-hands-off-each-other--"

Carol held up a hand to stop him. "I don't need details, Michael. Really."

"Oh. Sorry. But anyway... that's all been great. But, I think she's getting sick now."

"Sick?" Again, she shouldn't have asked. She just needed his signature on three forms, and then she could leave. Why was she staying? Participating in a conversation with the man?

"Yeah. She's been throwing up, like, every morning. It's weird."

Carol absorbed that for a moment. "Huh."

"Yeah," he chuckled. "Weird, right? And then, the whole rest of the day... she acts like nothing ever happened. Like it's normal she pukes her brains out in the morning."

"Well, have you asked her what's going on?" Because Carol had a pretty good idea...

"Yeah, and she says that when she gets back from the doctor today we'd talk about it. But... I'm kinda worried about her, Carol."

She flicked a polite(-ish) smile. "Well, I'm sure she'll be fine, Michael."

"I hope so. I mean... we just got married. I don't want to be a widower already! I mean... I don't ever want to be a widower at all. I think Jan and I should just get to live absolutely forever, but look how we look right now, because I'm probably not going to be as devastatingly handsome as I am right now when I'm older."

Carol just moved right on past that. Sometimes, it was all you could do. "So Michael, these forms--"

"What do you think could be wrong with her? Do you think it's, like... an eating disorder or something?"

She shook her head. His naivete was really astounding at times. Wasn't it glaringly obvious what the issue was here? "I really doubt it's an eating disorder, Michael."

"You're right. I probably would see signs or something." Michael nodded slowly to himself, resolutely.

"I'm sure she'll be fine."

"Well what's the deal?"

"Here are those forms--"

Michael's cell phone began to ring (and it played 'Here Comes the Bride' -- Carol didn't even need to ponder who that was), and he clicked it on eagerly. "Hey you! We were just talking about you." He paused. "Me and Carol. And I know what you're thinking, but you have nothing to worry about. I am all yours." He frowned. "What do you mean 'that's unfortunate'?" Then he laughed at whatever the response was. "Oh, I love you. I do. So how'd it go at the doctor?"

Carol rolled up her sleeve to check her watch. Michael always became pretty absorbed with Jan when she was nearby, and -- if she remembered correctly -- even when she wasn't. She thought maybe she'd be able to sneak out undetected.

"Oh my God!"

Her head snapped up to find Michael's mouth ajar. Just like the last time. "Michael?"

He held up a hand to her, still completely enthralled with whatever it was his wife was telling him. "You ARE?" His laugh was incredulous. "Oh my God!"

Carol had a pretty good idea of what Jan was telling him, and yet something compelled her to stay; to find out whether or not her suspicions were correct. What was it about this man and his zany relationships that captivated her?

"That's so amazing," she heard him say, and he was shaking his head while still looking quite stunned. "I can't believe this. We are SO going to celebrate when I get home from signing these boring-ass papers!" He looked up at Carol apologetically. "No offense."

Carol just smiled, shook her head to dismiss his apology, and gently slid the forms toward him and he cradled his cell phone between his neck and shoulder, hurriedly scrawling his name on all the indicated lines; obviously distracted and wanting to get home to his wife as soon as humanly possible.

"Alright. I'll see you soon. And Jan." He paused, and a slow ear-to-ear smile took over his face as he proclaimed softly, "I love you."

Carol had to smile at that. She couldn't help it, damn her. It was obvious they loved each other deeply. She looked up to see Michael folding his phone shut and placing it in his pocket, meeting her eyes with nothing short of complete and total wonder in his own.

She raised her eyebrows. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah. Amazing." Another ear-to-ear grin spread, and she almost forgot (through all the craziness and random proposals and Photoshopped Christmas cards) how handsome he was. "Jan's pregnant."

"She is? That's wonderful. Congratulations, Michael."

"Thanks. I, uh..." He looked down at the papers in front of him and his brows knit together, as if he was seeing the forms for the first time. "Did I sign these already? I almost forgot why we were here."

"Yes, you signed them."

"Okay. Well, I have to go. I have to get home."

"Sure." She rose to her feet and checked her watch again, thankful in a way for Jan's interruption; it considerably shortened what would have otherwise been a very lengthy meeting.

"Because uh... I'm gonna be a dad." He was grinning like a fool and it was just a little bit adorable. He laughed a little bit too, obviously shocked beyond belief. "I'm gonna be a dad!"

Carol just smiled, because there was nothing left to say or do... and she watched as Michael wandered off in a daze, occasionally tapping random strangers and excitedly telling them, "My wife's pregnant! I'm gonna be a dad!"

Then Carol couldn't help but chuckle and shake her head. Sometimes Michael Scott made it impossible for her to stay in realtor mode.

After all, crazy has a way of sucking people in. But Carol didn't mind that. So on her way out of Steamtown Mall, she bought a congratulatory card for Michael and Jan, and wondered how her next meeting with him would turn out.

OMG seriously, Caramel is amaaaaazzziiiing. I think I tend to fall real hard for "Valentine's Day" fic -- I'm seriously in love with that episode. That elevator kiss is the prettiest kiss, of all the kisses.

yeah I would have to agree with that :)

There's something about seeing the way Jan acts when she doesn't know the cameras are on her.

As for continuing it? I honestly never planned on continuing 'Realtor Mode' when this idea struck. So... I guess I shouldn't rule anything out. I will say I don't have anything planned right now, but we'll see what happens :D

Loved how clueless Michael was when it took all of five seconds for Carol to guess what was wrong, lol.

Oh and LOVED Michael going up to random people and screaming "My wife's pregnant! I'm going to be a dad!" cause, gah, so perfect!
