The Span of a Week [The OC; Ryan/Kirsten]
TITLE: The Span of a Week
PART 2/5: The Burning
FANDOM: The OC
PAIRING: Ryan/Kirsten
SPOILERS: Season three
RATING: PG this chapter
SUMMARY:

*****

02. Two days later and Ryan found himself suffering through an unbearably hot day, and the air conditioning at Harbor wasn't helping matters. He resolved to dive head-first into the pool the moment he got home -- possibly fully-clothed.

Seth had dropped him off and took off for Summer's, and Ryan practically sprinted in the direction of the patio doors. The moment he was outside and up the steps, his eyes caught on a bikini-clad Kirsten, who was lying on her stomach on one of the poolside lounge chairs. Ryan tilted his head (and tried not to stare too hard). "Kirsten?"

She had apparently been asleep, because her head jerked up and she made an odd, groggy sort of grunt. "Hmm? Ryan?" She was wearing large, dark sunglasses and still shielded her eyes from the sun.

He found himself chuckling at the deep creases the towel had left on her face. "Were you sleeping?"

"I could've sworn I'd only closed my eyes for a minute. What time is it?"

"Two-thirty."

"Oh, God. I've been asleep out here for two hours!" She went to roll onto her side and immediately winced, laying her head down again. "Okay, and my back is already sore. That's great." Still, she laughed at herself. "Now you see why I don't do this very often."

Ryan chuckled and went to her, crouching down by her side. Her arm immediately shot out, pointing at the other lounge chair. "Ryan, I think I've got some aloe under that towel. Could you...? Oh, God." Her voice trailed off into a pained whimper and she laid her head down again. "I'm in pain already. That can't be good."

"No," he chuckled softly. "But I'll help you out."

He took out the bottle of aloe and squirted some into his palm, the other hand reaching for the tie on her aqua swimsuit. He hesitated halfway, suddenly nervous. "Um... uh, do you mind if I--"

"Oh! Here." Kirsten, always clued in to him, sent him a smile (he wasn't sure if she was flirting or not -- it was so hard to tell these days) and reached up behind herself, untying the knot. She stayed on her stomach and the ties fell to her sides.

Ryan gulped unconsciously, a moral dilemma slapping him in the face. He was only helping Kirsten out... innocently putting aloe on her sunburn, but... what would happen if he suddenly flipped her over and kissed her? Would she hit him? Yell? Shove him in the pool?

"Ryan?" Her flaxen locks flew as she looked over her shoulder at him, taking her sunglasses off and meeting his eyes.

Ryan snapped back to reality, realizing he'd been quiet for too long, and muttered, "Oh, sorry," before starting to rub the aloe into her back. He could have sworn he saw another flirtatious smile curl her lips, but for sanity's sake he disregarded it and set about the task at-hand.

Kirsten winced and hissed in pain when he hit spots on her back that were particularly bad, and Ryan apologized every time. And every time, Kirsten told him he didn't have to, but that he was sweet. Ryan had never been called sweet before. He liked it.

Kirsten's face was hidden from his view for the most part, but -- under the guise of needing to rub aloe on her left shoulder -- Ryan swept his hand under her sun-kissed hair and gently moved it off to the other side to find her peeking at him. She again smiled flirtatiously and Ryan couldn't help but smile back this time. Suddenly he was warm for another reason aside from temperature.

"Feeling any better?"

"A bit, yes. Thank you, you're my hero," she quipped.

Ryan smiled and focused his eyes on her shoulders, where he was now massaging. "That's what I'm here for, Kirsten," he teased right back. "To ease any of your pain or discomfort."

"Ah, if only Sandy treated me like this." She'd said it lightly, but Ryan read the subtext beneath it all too well.

And that was when their eyes caught. Ryan was still massaging her back gently, and Kirsten was watching him with a certain sparkle in her eyes. His hand slid down her spine, resting on the small of her back, and he heard her suck in her breath. "Hurt?" he asked instinctively.

She shook her head, "No," and she sounded almost... breathless.

Ryan was floored by the implication... but before he could respond, Kirsten had hurriedly tied her swimsuit and sat up, wrapping her towel around herself. She nervously brushed her hair out of her eyes and avoided his gaze, pulling her sunglasses back on. "Thank you, Ryan," she murmured, and gave his hand a squeeze before she all but dashed into the house.

Ryan watched her go and let out his breath slowly, shaking his head in an attempt to shake off the electricity that had just passed between him and Kirsten. Then, he took a deep breath and dove headfirst into the pool... fully-clothed.

Re: WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HEEEE, thanks much! Glad you enjoyed the tension. I'm a sucker for the kind of tension that includes a bikini-clad Kirsten, bwahahaha.

OMG that'd be SO cool if I had the guts to write that kind of Rysten fic, HAHAHA. Except I'm more of the "get-Sandy-and-Seth-out-of-the-way" kinda Rysten author. Hehehe :D

AWWW not Sandy beating up Ryan! *pets Ryan*

...*inappropriately*

HAHA. Seriously though, that'd be awesome if there was a threat of a fight but then Sandy realizes that Ryan could totally kick his ass ;)

This is definitely true. I forget about Sandy's roots sometimes... because he's Sandy. HAHAHA.

Oooh! What about a Sandy-and-Kirsten-fight-and-it-escalates? And Sandy inadvertently hits Kirsten? And then Ryan punches Sandy. And then, y'know... he whisks Kirsten off to the poolhouse for some sex. AWESOME.

Hehehe, it definitely takes a lot of practice to be able to write a sex scene. That and a ton of euphemisms, lol.

I didn't start writing them until I was like seventeen. And my first ones were H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E too, believe me, haha. Just keep on practicing :D

Loved the icon for this installment. (the lucky bastard.) And loved this installment itself. It always is nice when an author doesn't give too much away too early.

I can pretty much imagine that I'd have the same reaction as Ryan if I walked outside and saw the same sight he did. Then, the line about Sandy had me ready to go find him and send him somewhere dark and cold.

"Thank you, Ryan," she murmured, and gave his hand a squeeze before she all but dashed into the house.
Sounds like someone needs a cold shower, and not because of a sunburn. Reminds me of Dream Weavers, where Kirsten can't be in Ryan's presence because of what her mind is conjuring.

The title of the next one suggests another compromising position, which would rock all our socks!

Bwahahaha, thanks. That's one of my latest Rysten icons. They're all posted, btw, so I'd love to get your thoughts on all those new ones.

Also? OMG DREAM WEAVERS. I'M HORRIBLE AND TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT FIC, HAHAHA. Oh, that's bad. I was all excited to do that one, too. I'll have to pick it up again after I'm thru with this one :)

And yes, a bikini-clad Kirsten could make anyone -- man or woman -- stand there staring for a few minutes (hours). Hahaha.

Glad you liked this one! Third part goes up tonight!
