Being A Donaghy [30 Rock; Jack/Liz]
TITLE: Being A Donaghy
CHAPTER 23: Like Nothing Ever Happened
FANDOM: 30 Rock
PAIRING: Jack/Liz
SPOILERS: Through "Corporate Crush"
RATING: PG
SUMMARY:

*****

"Liz! Will you tell Pete he cannot put me in another 'Dancing with the Bears' sketch? I thought Lutz wanted 'Dancing with the Hobos' anyway."

"Liz, tell Jenna that the sketch was a hit the last time! And you know nobody wants to see 'Dancing with the Hobos.' Bears are funnier! Much funnier. Liz?"

"Liz, are you even listening to us? Liz!"

Liz startled when her name was shouted, finally coming out of her reverie to see her two best friends staring at her from in front of her desk. "Oh. Hi."

"What is the matter with you?" Pete wanted to know.

"Yeah," Jenna chimed in. "A little bit ago you were floating around, grinning like an idiot! An idiot that had just gotten laid. What gives?"

Liz said nothing; merely slid the manila envelope across the desk to Jenna and Pete.

Pete grabbed it first. "Oh hey, annulment papers. Guess this means you're finally free, right?" He chuckled.

Meanwhile, Jenna cast sympathetic eyes on Liz. "Honey, I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"

"Is she okay?" Pete balked. "Liz, isn't this what you wanted from the second you accepted his proposal?"

"Yeah, but..." She trailed off, and looked to Jenna for help.

Jenna easily filled in, "But now Jack has said the L-word and they've slept together. So, Liz just might have a problem."

Pete made a face. "Okay, glossing right over the fact that you slept with Jack, um..." He squinted. "Aren't you supposed to get divorced, now? You can't get an annulment if you've--"

"Jack said he'd be willing to pretend it never happened," Liz replied, "if I am."

Jenna's eyes widened at that. "Oh, God."

"I shouldn't be mad about this, right? I shouldn't be... I mean... Jack and I aren't, y'know... we're just..."

Pete glanced to Jenna. "Do you know what the ends of those sentences are? Because I don't."

Liz yanked the papers back from him and ignored his indignant shout about paper cuts. She slammed the papers down on her desk angrily. "How dare he! You know, it's been nothing but a rollercoaster ever since this stupid thing started! First he proposes, then he acts like he's in love with me. Then, he says he's not. He does all kinds of sweet things for me, he tells me he cares about me... then he tells me he loves me... he sleeps with me -- five times! -- and then he just wants to pretend like nothing ever happened?! What the hell?!"

Gently, Jenna pointed out, "Honey, you've never given him any indication of how you might be feeling."

"So?"

Pete sat down beside Jenna, across from Liz's desk, and joined in. "So, Liz, for all he knows, you're still wanting out of this. He doesn't know your feelings might've changed." Pete ducked his head, trying to recapture her gaze. "Have they changed?"

"I... I don't..." Liz started twisting her ring on her finger.

Jenna rolled her eyes and let out a frustrated exclamation through gritted teeth, fed up with her friend's blatant denial of the obvious. "Come ON, Liz! It's been two months! There is no way you can sit there and tell us that you have no idea how you feel. You know exactly how you feel about Jack, and it's about time you face it head-on. Say it!"

"Fine! I love him!" Liz spat out, almost angrily. "Are you happy?"

Jenna smiled, calmly. "Yes, actually." She sat back down.

Liz covered her eyes and groaned. "He is the most infuriating man I have ever met." She grimaced as she mentioned, "He still giggles at animal shows like a six-year-old." She sighed and rubbed her hand over her eyes. "He actually owns not one, but two pairs of glow-in-the-dark dress socks, and he can't make so much as one decision when I'm not right there with him. He hovers around me constantly and showers me with compliments -- which aren't so insulting anymore, and that's actually kinda nice-- and he generally makes me feel good about myself which is really weird especially with how we first started out, but... dammit, I love him."

She pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling quite the headache coming on. Was that the natural physical reaction to letting all of that stuff out of her head finally? "He's not the guy I wanted to end up with -- not even close. Looking at him, you wouldn't even think he'd be a halfway decent husband, but... he is. And he's mine." Liz jabbed herself in the chest emphatically. "He is my husband."

Before Jenna or Pete could interject with so much as one syllable, Liz had jumped up from her chair and was now pacing behind her desk. "And now he's just wanting to erase everything! Like it never happened! Because that's what an annulment is, right? It wipes away the marriage like it never even happened. Like he hasn't spent the last couple months driving me out of my mind."

"Talk to him," Jenna told her, eyeing her warily as if she might attack with one wrong word spoken. "Talk to him and tell him what you're thinking... what you're feeling. He probably has no idea. Right Pete?" She smacked her cohort.

Pete nodded immediately. "Yeah. Yeah, he probably has no idea. Guys are idiots."

Liz sighed, finally looking like she'd calmed down considerably. Jenna raised her eyebrows at her. "So... are you gonna go talk to him?"

She shook her head and folded her arms across her chest. "Not right now I'm not. I might smack him if I see him right now. I mean... how dare he?!"

Jenna nodded and slowly rose to her feet, pulling Pete up with her. "Okay. Just... you don't need to go over that again. Just get through the rest of the day, and talk to him later. Breathe."

Liz nodded her agreement, and took a deep breath, blowing it out through pursed lips. "Alright. I'm okay."

Jenna and Pete, still eyeing her warily, started for the door, waving meekly at her over their shoulders.

Just before they disappeared around the corner, Liz shouted after them, "And Pete, no more 'Dancing with the Bears'! Or hobos! It's ridiculous."

*****

"Ah yes, here we are. Thank you, sir. If you could bring my wife and I a bottle of your best champagne then, please and thank you."

Liz tried her best to smile as Jack pulled her chair out for her, and then pushed it in gentlemanly once she had sat down. Her eyes followed him as he moved around to his side of their candlelit table for two, smiling at her. A waiter was quick to rush over and fill their glasses with champagne, and Jack raised his in a toast while Liz contemplated just gulping hers down.

Still, she indulged him, and raised her glass as well.

"To getting what we want," he toasted with a smile. He clinked his glass against Liz's, then took a sip of his champagne.

Liz followed suit, feigning a smile at him before completely draining her champagne glass. "So this is what you've wanted all along, huh? Just your microwaves back."

"Liz, you knew that the moment you accepted my proposal." He leaned halfway across the table, dropping his voice. "What is the matter with you?"

"What is the matter with you?" she shot back, bitterness taking over. "You're just... wiping all of this away? Like it never happened?"

"I thought that was what you wanted," he replied simply, shrugging his shoulders. His face was all innocence, and it kinda made Liz want to smack him just a little.

Okay, a lot. "So now you're telling me what I want," she grumbled. All of her anger and frustration and confusion was piling up inside of her, spilling out like that unstoppable word vomit. And she could tell Jack was completely bewildered by it.

Especially when he shook his head and admitted, "I don't understand what's happening, here."

Rather than continue the fight, Liz just screamed frustratedly through gritted teeth and grabbed her purse, marching for the door. There was no way she could sit through an entire "celebration" dinner with him, pretending to be happy, when her emotions were threatening to pull her in fifty directions at once. She would not have that kind of meltdown in public.

She threw her arm up to hail a cab, and was surprisingly able to flag one down. Just as it rolled to a stop, her arm was yanked down, and Jack spun her to face him. "What are you doing, Lemon?"

"I'm getting out of here. I can't be around you right now." She reached for the door handle of the cab, but he pulled her back.

"Let's go home and discuss this. Please..." He pulled out his blackberry and sent a message to his driver to pick them up. "Just... wait here, please. Let me go pay for our champagne and we'll go home."

Liz really wanted to scream in frustration again. Or maybe throw her purse at Jack. But the desperation on his face kept her there; she stayed while he ran in (literally -- he ran) to pay their bill. And when the limo pulled up, she let Jack open the door for her and guide her in. She fumed silently the rest of the way home.

*****

"Okay..." Jack guided her inside with his hand on her back, sounding awfully wary of her like she might cut him or something. "Now, why don't you tell me what's going on."

"How could you?!" she blurted, spinning around and throwing her hands up.

Jack's eyes widened at her briefly, and he remained near the door with his hands in his pockets. He pursed his lips and asked, "How could I... what?"

"After everything, after last night especially, you give me these--" she slapped the manila envelope down on the couch, "and tell me you want to pretend like it never happened? How could you?!"

"Lemon..." He approached slowly. She'd never seen Jack scared (of a woman) before. It was kind of an interesting sight. If she'd been in a lighter frame of mind, she might've even enjoyed it. "You made it clear since the beginning that this was only a favor, so I could get my microwave division back." He now stood toe-to-toe with her. "You've always been adamant in wanting out of this as soon as possible."

"Yeah, well...!" Liz trailed off and looked down at the papers. She stared at them a moment, biting her lip before looking up at Jack again.

He nodded at them. "There's your out."

Liz followed his gaze to the glaringly-white annulment papers again, lying face up with Jack's signature already neatly scrawled... testing her. She met his eyes and took a breath, feeling herself start to calm. Just a little. "And what do you want, Jack? Do you want out?"

"Well," he huffed, "to be perfectly honest, Lemon, you're nothing like the kind of woman I always wanted to end up with. I wanted someone poised, sophisticated, worldly..."

Liz rolled her eyes. "Thanks. Where's a pen?"

Jack slid his hand around her upper arm before she could go far, pulling her back to meet his gaze again. "But... I've never met a woman who challenges me like you do. Those worldly, sophisticated women? They're a bore, Lemon. An absolute bore. Nothing more than an arm-charm, and I'm past the point of needing one of those. I need a woman that will irritate me on a semi-daily basis; someone that will call me out on the things I'm doing wrong. I need a woman who I can show my funny animal videos to without her thinking I'm insane. A woman that might even be able to beat me in the stress-eating department."

Liz couldn't help but smirk at this and roll her eyes, planting her hands on her hips.

Jack continued. "I need a woman I can get along with, and that I can be around for extended periods of time without growing mind-numbingly bored. You've never bored me, Lemon."

A genuine smile plucked at her lips, but Liz was able to suppress it.

"But this is not about what I want, or what I need." He nodded at her. "This is about you. I want you to be happy. Liz, when I inadvertently admitted my feelings for you... those feelings were genuine. However confused they've made me, they're there. I love you and I want you to be happy." He gave a slight nod toward the papers again. "I thought those would've made you happy."

"They would have," she agreed, quietly, staring at the papers and unconsciously drifting closer to Jack. She didn't even blink, or flinch, when his hands closed around her waist. It was too familiar a sensation to be startling anymore. She leaned against him and looked up at him, jabbing him in the chest. "Because believe me, bucko, you're not the kind of guy I wanted to end up with, either! I was looking for... some kind of a hot 'Star Wars' freak."

"That's frightening."

Liz laughed, and Jack laughed, too. After a moment, she sighed and reached for the papers, tearing them in half as she told Jack, "I'm not signing these." She grinned almost devilishly. "If you wanna get rid of me, you'd better be prepared for a fight... because like it or not, I've somehow come to love you back."

She watched in amusement as his eyes widened. She'd never seen them get that wide. "You... what?"

She rolled her eyes at him, and grabbed him by the back of the neck, dragging him down to her and murmuring against his lips with a smile, "Against my better judgment, Jack, I love you too."

Then she kissed him. She wrapped her arms around her husband and kissed the hell out of him. And he gathered her up, held her against him, and started backing with her toward the bedroom. All the way down the hall, they continually bumped into various sections of the wall, on each side, laughing every time like a couple of drunken teenagers.

Halfway to the bedroom, Jack pinned his wife to the wall and kissed down her cheek and jawline. "You know they say when you meet 'The One,' Lemon, you know it in the first twenty-four hours."

"Is that so?" she teased. "Well, in the first twenty-four hours we met, Jack, I knew that you would always kinda annoy me."

"Ah. Not as sentimental as my own thoughts on that day, but I'll take it."

"So what did you think in the first twenty-four hours, Jack?"

"Well, Lemon... let's just say when you glared at me on your way out of our first meeting, and that chunk of plaster fell on your head... I was enchanted." He grinned at her and ran his finger across her bottom lip. "I had an inkling I'd be forever yearning to understand you."

Liz rolled her eyes, though inwardly she was melting. Kind of. Just a little bit. Not that she'd ever tell him. "Are we going to bed or not?"

"It's six o'clock."

Liz raised her eyebrows pointedly and started dragging her husband toward the bedroom by his tie.

Jack, ever the quick one, caught on. "Oh, yes, of course. Bed. That's a good idea, it's getting late."

Liz laughed and yanked him inside, slamming the door behind them.

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!
"Okay, glossing right over the fact that you slept with Jack, um..."
I love Pete.

Greatest rant ever. She SO loves him!

I can't believe there's only one more chapter. How am I going to procrastinate now??

*giggle* Thanks muchly! That rant was SO much fun, because I got to let her just spew out everything that had been piling up, because... yes. She SO loves him! Hehe.

The finale will be up tomorrow! And don't worry, I'm sure I'll have plenty more Jack/Liz fics in the coming days/weeks. Plenty to distract you from any and all responsibilities! :D

Awww, thanks Jenn! Hehehe, glad you're still liking this.

And yep, giggly's a word! And even if it wasn't? It's all about making up new words and spreading 'em around. :D

Oh, now I'm all tingly! I absolutely adored this chapter!!! That bit where Jack told her what he thought of her after their first meeting... squeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! Gah, perfect dialogue, and I love that Jack was only giving her the anullment papers because he thought it would make her happy. The tension between them was great, I could just feel the electricity between them. Oh, it was so perfect, I loved it! But am very sad now that there's only one chapter left. *weary sigh* I think I've been on more of an emotional rollercoaster than Liz has! Can't wait to read the conclusion.

Hehehehe! Thank you so so so much! I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. And the bit about their first meeting was my favorite part to write, because I've been wanting to use that in a fic for SO long. That part was basically my opinion on that first meeting. If you watch the Pilot there's this look on Jack's face as Liz is walking out and glaring at him... like he's already just completely taken with her. It's so cute!

And even though the last chapter will be posted tomorrow, this is by no means an ending. I've got tons more Jack/Liz ideas in my head, and I'm sure it won't be long before they all come tumbling out ;D

Thanks again!

Hee! I love that Liz finally confesses her feelings for him when they are in the middle of an argument! And that it totally surprizes him.
Also, the description of both Liz's freak out in the restaurant and Jack's reaction to it were hilarious and touching all at once.
And a stress eating shout-out! And "some kind of a hot 'Star Wars' freak"!
The wonderfulness of all of this was only surpassed by the tremendous satisfaction of knowing Liz ripped up the papers. <3

Hehe, thanks so much! Love confessions during arguments are always fun for us authors to write ;D

And I'm glad you liked the arguments/Liz's restaurant freakout, because honestly? I thought I was toeing the dramatic line just a liiiiitttle too much, lol! Glad to hear it didn't get too over-the-top.

Final chapter goes up tomorrow (but the Jack/Lizness won't stop there, believe me)! Hehe, thanks again!

I don't understand! How is it that with every chapter, this story just gets better and better? It's like one of those reality shows that say the next episode will be the greatest one yet...EXCEPT IT'S TRUE! :P

I don't want it to end!!

HEEE! Thanks much! That's so sweet of you to say! This story has been just an endless delight for me as an author; it's been thrilling getting your reactions on everything. And all the warm reviews definitely kept up the inspiration.

The finale goes up sometime tomorrow, but don't worry -- I've got lots more Jack/Liz up my sleeve. They're too enchanting to leave behind. ;D

I was looking for... some kind of a hot 'Star Wars' freak."

"That's frightening."

Hee!

Also, I really liked that you made reference to the first day they met, because I was watching the unaired pilot/rewatching the first official episode and I ended up thinking "Oh, man, he was smitten with her immediately." Because I really think he was. But! Anyway. Awesome chapter as always.
a.: J/L; strange as it seemsregalish on July 6th, 2007 02:09 am (UTC)
OMG OK I'm so glad you said that! I thought I was the only one that thought Jack was a smitten-kitten from day one! HEEEEE. Yes, I absolutely love love LOVE that moment. She's glaring daggers at him over her shoulder and he's just staring at her with the very slightest of smiles, and then the chunk of plaster falls on her and she stomps off. In my mind, that's the exact moment that snared Jack :D

...I could go on some more, LOL, but I won't. Anyway! I'm glad you liked this chapter! The finale will be up tomorrow ;D

So I found this story last night (after to coming to terms that I love this show wayyyy too much *grin*) and read it all in one go. Absolutely fantastic.

Your take on all the characters, and especially the secondary ones who get 3 sentences per chapter are spot on. Kenneth is so good that I hear his stupid southern drawl, and I picture Pete feeling awkward at being stuck inbetween Liz and Jenna's girl talk.

So thank you <3 I've enjoyed this story, even though I was a greedy girl and read nearly all of it in one go. Looking forward to the last chapter!

WOW, you read this all in one go? That is bravery! Hehehe. I'm so glad you found your way to this story, and that you enjoy it! (And I'm so with you on loving this show waaaayyyy too much, hehe!)

Thank you so much for the comment on my characterization. That's always a huge deal for me; I won't even attempt a character if I can't write him correctly, so thanks again!!

The final chapter will be up this evening! ♥

So I was very harsh with Jack , he was only thinking in Liz happiness (that also taught me not to post a review or talk to anyone when I just had a big fight with one of my staff.I really need the mini vacation very urgently).

In the morning I was reading my review and I was like this is a neurotic, psycho, review why am I mad to a fictional character???, Well...I'd better go to talk to some food about this (and I did!).

I'm love with Jack again and they have their happy ending. I love this story so much (but not in a psycho or a queer way) ^__^
a.: J2; he's magic and myth;regalish on July 6th, 2007 05:37 pm (UTC)
Hehehe! Well, I'm glad you're not upset with Jack anymore. We love him too much to stay mad at him for very long anyway, hahaha ;D

Glad you liked this chapter! The final one will be up this evening! Hope it doesn't disappoint! *crosses fingers*

Dragging Jack to bed. PRICELE$$.

I have loved you (not in a queer way) ever since the begining of this fic. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. *Cries*

Post that last chapter damnit, so that I can print it out! *evil laugh* I need a distraction on the looong commute home.

Hahaha, thanks so much! Glad you liked the dragging :D I would love to see Liz do that on the show, even if it's in a non-romantic manner, I'd love to see her dragging Jack somewhere by the tie. Oh, it would win.

I'm so thrilled you're still enjoying this, and that you've stuck it out this long! You are one of the people that's kept up inspiration for this fic (because seriously? I SO did not mean to drag it out for this long, LOLOL).

The final chapter goes up this evening!!

HEEEE. Oh, you're adorable.

I have NO CLUE where I got the glow-in-the-dark dress socks thing from. It was one of those things where you pull it out of your hat literally two seconds before you post it. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about :D

And though this is almost over, there will be tons (and tons) more Jack/Liz to come!!

Thank you so very much, as always, m'dear!
